Peru State Baseball Drops Pair of Close Games to OKWU

(Peru, Neb.) – The first game was low scoring and the second was just the opposite. In both instances the Oklahoma Wesleyan (OKWU) Eagles won the contests 4-2 and 14-13 in Bartlesville on Saturday.
 
The ninth-ranked Eagles improved to 11-8 on the season. Peru State dropped to 4-8 in the early part of their season.
 
First Game Action
 
The 'Cats got on the board first in the top of the first. Darrien Liriano (Orlando, Fla.) doubled to left to lead off for Peru State. Liriano advanced to third on a wild throw. After an out, Jesus Tavarez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) singled to center to drive in Liriano.

Peru State held the one-run lead until the bottom of the fourth when the Eagles knotted the score.

OKWU would plate three runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the score at 4-1.
 
The Bobcats would try to make a comeback in the top of the seventh inning. Manual Caballero (Dolega, Panama) singled to left-center to lead off. Jaxson Balm (Auburn) entered to run for Caballero. After an out, Balm advanced to second on a passed ball. Austin Greenfield (Omaha) reached as he was hit by a pitch. Jose Chacin (Machiques, Venezuela) loaded the bases with a walk. On a ground out by Liriano, Balm scored to put the score at 4-2. Peru State would end up leaving the bases loaded.
 
The Eagles scored their four runs on eight hits and committed three errors. Peru State scored with two runs on three hits and did not have any errors.
 
Liriano, Tavarez, and Caballero each had one hit while Liriano and Tavarez were credited with one RBI.
 
Joshua Santiago (Carolina, Puerto Rico) started the game for Peru State and was tagged for the loss. Santiago threw four innings and allowed two hits, two earned runs, and struck out four. Caballero entered to relieve Santiago and tossed the final two innings. He gave up six hits, two earned runs, and struck out two.

Second Game Action
 
The second game was a wild one with lots of scoring.
 
OKWU scored six in the bottom of the first only to see the 'Cats score six in the top of the second to tie the score. Caballero started the frame by reaching on an error. He would move to second on a passed ball. Julian Fernandez (Middle Village, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch. Both base runners would advance on a balk. After two outs, Chacin singled to shallow center to drive in both base runners. Luis Landaeta (Porlamar, Venezuela) entered to run for Chacin. Hector Torres (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) singled to left-center with Landaeta moving to third and Torres going to second on the throw. Liriano reached on a walk to load the bases. On a wild pitch, Landaeta with the other base runners advancing. On another wild pitch, Torres scored, and Liriano moved to third. Tavarez reached on a walk which forced a pitching change. Jackson Tingwald (Ralston) doubled to deep right-center to bring home both Liriano and Tavarez to tie the score at 6-6.
 
The Eagles would regain the lead in the bottom of the frame by plating one.
 
Neither team scored in the third, but Peru State would once again tie the game in the top of the fourth. Liriano singled to right and would go to second when Tavarez singled to shallow left-center. Tingwald reached on a walk to load the bases. On a double play, Liriano scored to tie the game at 7.

Hector Torres had a pair of hits in the final game against the Eagles
 
The tie game was short-lived as the Eagles plated four in the bottom of the frame to make it 11-7.
 
Peru State would cut into the lead in the top of the fifth with one run. After two outs, Chacin doubled to left. Torres singled to right to bring home Chacin to cut the lead down to three.
 
OKWU would score their final runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth as they added three to put the score at 14-8.
 
The Bobcats would get back into the game in the top of the sixth by scoring five. Tavarez singled shallow down the left field line. Tingwald doubled to deep left-center with Tavarez stopping at third. Eddy Pimental (San Juan, Puerto Rico) doubled to center to drive in Tavarez with Tingwald stopping at third. Fernandez singled to center to bring home both Tingwald and Pimental to make it 14-11. After an out, Greenfield reached with a walk. On a passed ball, the base runners advanced. Chacin doubled to deep right-center to bring home both runners and suddenly the 'Cats were within one at 14-13. Peru State would eventually leave two on base and could not capitalize for any more runs.
 
The Eagles scored their 14 runs on 14 hits and committed one error. Peru State scored their 13 runs on 12 hits and had three errors.
 
Chacin led the team by going three for four with four RBI. Tavarez, Tingwald, and Torres each added two hits. Tingwald and Fernandez also had two RBI.
 
Daniel Castillo (Burrowsville, Columbia) started on the mound for the Bobcats and suffered the loss. Castillo threw four innings giving up 12 hits, 11 runs – ten earned, and struck out three. Torres threw the next inning and gave up two hits, three earned runs, and struck out two. Austin Salemi (Sandwich, Ill.) got one out with Caballero tossing the final two outs which included one strikeout.

Peru State is scheduled to host its Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) opener on Saturday, February 29, provided Mother Nature cooperates. Missouri Valley is to be the opponent for a double header beginning at 1 p.m. The Vikings are 7-7 on the season having won seven straight after dropping their first seven contests of the season.
 
Then, on Sunday, the Bobcats are to head to Fayette, Mo., to take on Central Methodist in a double header also scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The 20th-ranked Eagles have started the year with a 10-3 mark having won their last nine games.
