Strong Second Half for Doane Propels Tigers Past Bobcat WBB

(Peru, Neb.) – The Doane Tigers scored 53 points in the second half on their way to an 87-83 win over the visiting Peru State women's basketball team Friday night in Crete.
 
The Bobcats led by 17 at halftime and still led by two at the end of the third quarter, but Doane outscored the 'Cats by six in the final stanza for the win.
 
Doane improved to 1-1 on the season while it was the season opener for the Bobcats.
 
First Quarter Action
 
Mackenzie Shupe (Lenexa, Kan.) hit a trey off an assist from Libby Baumert (Plattsmouth) to start the scoring for Peru State with 15 seconds off the clock. The Bobcats would not trail the rest of the first half.

With 7:17 to go in the quarter, Dayna Dewitt (Mansfield, Texas) hit a bucket in the paint off an assist from Maddy McPhillips (Omaha) to put the Bobcats up 13-7 which was the largest lead at that point.
 
Later, with 3:52 remaining in the first ten minutes, Julie Miller (Easton, Kan.) hit a bucket in the paint from McPhillips to make the score 21-12. The nine-point lead was the largest of the quarter for the 'Cats.
 
A trey by McKenzie Witt (Falls City) with 46 seconds left gave the Bobcats a 29-21 lead at the end of the first quarter.
 
Second Quarter Action
 
Alyssa Marsh-Contreras (Omaha) started the scoring in the second quarter off an assist from McPhillips. Maddy Duncan (Hamburg, Iowa) would hit a pair of free throws which was then followed by a bucket by Ellie Bream (Waverly) off a fast-break and an assist from Marsh-Contreras. With 7:33 on the clock, McPhillips hit a trey and the 'Cats would lead 38-21 – their largest lead in the game to that point.
 
After Doane scored their first points of the second quarter, Shupe would hit another trey off an assist from McPhillips and the Bobcats had extended their lead to 18.
 
Peru State's largest lead was 19 and the 'Cats led 45-26 with 4:44 on the clock after a bucket by Samantha Stewart (Mount Ayr, Iowa).
 
The Tigers would cut the lead to 13 at 47-34 before Marsh-Contreras hit a pair of free throws and Bream finished one in the paint to give the Bobcats a 51-34 advantage at halftime.
 
Third Quarter Action
 
Peru State would lead by as many as 18 in the third stanza before Doane started their comeback. The Bobcats were leading 54-36 after Marsh-Contreras hit a trey off an assist from Shupe with 8:40 on the clock.
 
The 'Cats would still lead by double digits until 1:01 on the clock when the Tigers pulled within nine at 65-56. Doane would score seven more points in the final 61 seconds to make the score 65-63 at the end of 30 minutes.

Fourth Quarter Action
 
Doane would score the first four points of the quarter to take their first lead of the game. Peru State would tie it on a bucket by Dewitt with 8:24 left in the game.
 
The game would be tied six times in the final stanza with the last tie coming at 77 with 4:18 before the Tigers scored four points and never trailed after that point.
 
Doane would lead 85-80 before Shupe hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to three. Marsh-Contreras would make one of two free throws to get the Bobcats within a bucket, but Peru State would not be able get any more points the rest of the game.

Both teams shot the ball well from the floor. Doane ended up out-shooting the Bobcats and made a remarkable 33 of 62 field goals for 53.2% including hitting 5 of 14 from long range for 35.7%. From the charity stripe, the Tigers were 16 of 24 for 66.7%. Peru State hit 28 of 63 field goals for 44.4% and were almost as good from the three-point range as they made 12 of 32 for 37.5%. At the free throw line, the 'Cats went 15 of 21 for 71.4%.
 
Peru State grabbed ten more rebounds than the Tigers as they finished with 39. The Bobcats also dished out 19 assists compared to 11 for Doane.
 
Doane blocked three shots and grabbed nine steals. Peru State blocked one shot and had seven steals.
 
Peru Individual Statistics
 
Four Bobcats finished in double figures with nine different players scoring in the contest. Shupe led the team with 21 points while Dewitt added 16. McPhillips finished with 15 while Marsh-Contreras contributed 14.
 
Dewitt almost finished with a double-double as she grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. McPhillips added seven while Marsh-Contreras and Duncan each finished with five.
 
McPhillips dished out seven assists with Shupe handing out four.

Upcoming Contests
 
Peru State will head to Leavenworth, Kan., on Monday to face the University of St. Mary at 7 p.m. with a junior varsity contest to take place prior to the varsity game. The Spires opened their season with a win over Ottawa (Kan.).
 
The Bobcats' first home game will be Friday, Nov. 13, when Hastings visits the Al Wheeler Activity Center at 6 p.m. The Broncos will play their first game next Wednesday before heading to Peru.
