Bobcats’ Tavarez Cabrera Drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers

(Peru, Neb.) – For the first time in five years, a Peru State Bobcat baseball player has been drafted during the Major League Baseball draft. Senior pitcher Eddy Tavarez Cabrera (San Cristobel, D.R.) became the highest Bobcat ever selected as he was drafted in the 21st round as the 643rd pick overall.

Tavarez Cabrera, along with several of his teammates and friends, were listening to the draft in the College's athletic department sky box when the news came. Tavarez Cabrera was pumped to be drafted and stated, "I'm just really excited that the Brewers are giving me the opportunity to achieve my dream."

A two-time Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) all-conference selection – a first team member as a junior and a second-team honoree this past season – Tavarez Cabrera was ranked at the top of two NAIA statistical categories at the end of the 2019 season. He was first in opponent batting average (0.146) and hits allowed per nine (4.41). He finished third in total hits allowed (33).

In just two seasons at Peru State, Tavarez Cabrera will leave his mark in many single-season and several career categories. He set the top mark with 118 strikeouts this season which topped his previous mark of 102 in 2018. Tavarez Cabrera will finish with the following career marks at this time: fourth in strikeouts (220), 11th in earned run average (3.39), and tied for 12th in victories (14).

Bobcat head coach Wayne Albury is proud of Eddy being drafted. Albury stated, "Eddy has worked very hard since coming to Peru State. He was very dedicated to reaching his goal and put in the effort to reach it. We wish him well in his next endeavor."

In talking about his experience at Peru State, Tavarez Cabrera noted, "I just want to thank all of those who have supported me along the way in this process. In particular, a big thanks to Coach (Wayne) Albury for taking a chance on me and getting me here to Peru State."

Tavarez Cabrera joins three other former Bobcat players who have been drafted since 2010. Yimy Rodriguez was drafted in the 27th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2010. The next year, Andre Kinder was drafted in the 42nd round by the Philadelphia Phillies. Then, in 2014, Randy Santiesteban was drafted in the 40th round by the Atlanta Braves. In July 2015, undrafted Andre Kinder signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers.
