Clarke Baseball Takes Series from Bobcats

(Peru, Neb.) – The Clarke Pride won two out of three in Dubuque, Iowa, Monday and Tuesday to take the three-game series over the visiting Peru State Bobcats.
 
Clarke swept the Monday double header 5-2 and 8-5. The 'Cats took the Tuesday contest 11-8. The Pride are now 20-15 overall and 15-6 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart). The Bobcats are 14-18 on the season and are 11-8 in conference play.
 
Monday Game One Action
 
Peru State got on the board first in the game in the top of the first inning. After two outs, Darren Hasch (Destin, Fla.) singled up the middle. Adam Cendejas (Chino Hills, Calif.) doubled to center field to drive in Hasch to put the 'Cats up 1-0.

Clarke would score two runs in the bottom of the third and added three more in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.
 
The Bobcats would add their only other run in the top of the seventh. Luis Landaeta (Porlamar, Venezuela) singled to center field but then would be part of a double play. Chaz Dunn (Falls City) singled and would move to second on an error. Jose Chacin (Machiques, Venezuela) singled to drive in Dunn, but that would be all Peru State would score in the inning as the Pride won 5-2.
 
The Pride scored their five runs on just three hits and committed one error. Peru State scored their two runs on eight hits and did not have any errors.
 
Cendejas and Dunn each had two hits in the game. Cendejas and Chacin each had one RBI.
 
Eddy Tavarez Cabrera (San Cristobel, D.R.) started on the mound and was tagged for the loss. Tavarez Cabrera through 5.2 innings and allowed 3 hits, 5 earned runs and struck out 10. Alfredo Barroso (Hialeah, Fla.) tossed the final out with a strikeout.

Monday Game Two Action
 
There was more scoring in the second game, but Peru State could not put together enough for the win.
 
The 'Cats once again scored first in the top of the first inning. Landaeta tripled to right center and came home when Jesus Tavarez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) grounded out.
 
The Pride scored two in the bottom of the inning to go up and actually never trailed after that point. Clarke would add one more run in the bottom of the third and then three more in the bottom of the fourth to lead 6-1.

The Bobcats would try to make it interesting in the top of the fifth inning. Dunn led off with a single to center field and then Jaime Del Hoyo (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) singled to short with Dunn stopping at second. Joshua Banuelos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) doubled to drive in Dunn with Del Hoyo stopping at third. Landaeta followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Del Hoyo and Banuelos moved to third. Tavarez singled to second to score Banuelos and it was 6-4 at that point. Peru State would strand two, but had cut the deficit.
 
Sterling Rupp (Grand Island) would lead off the sixth with a home run to make it 6-5, but the Bobcats would not score in the last three innings as they stranded two in the seventh, left the bases loaded in the eighth, and stranded two in the ninth.
 
Clarke would add a run in each of the seventh and eighth innings for their 8-5 win.
 
The Pride scored their eight runs on 12 hits and had no errors. Peru State scored their five runs on 16 hits and committed one error.
 
Dunn had one of his best games at the plate as he went four for five. Cendejas added three hits while Landaeta, Del Hoyo, and Banuelos each had two hits. Tavarez drove in two runs while Landaeta, Rupp, and Banuelos were each credited with one.
 
Ben Carr (Omaha) threw a complete game and suffered the loss. In Carr's eight innings, he allowed 12 hits, eight runs – all earned, and struck out seven.

Tuesday Game Action
 
Peru State was on the board first in the top of the first inning. Landaeta was hit by a pitch and on a fly ball out went to second. Hasch singled to give the 'Cats an early 1-0 lead.
 
Clarke would tie it with a run in the bottom of the second inning.

The Bobcats would explode for six runs in the top of the third inning. Landaeta reached on an error and Tavarez was hit by a pitch. Hasch singled to load the bases. Cendejas doubled to clear the bases. Rupp followed with a single back to the pitcher with Cendejas moving to third. Edwin Muniz (Dorado, P.R.) singled to drive in Cendejas. Dunn followed with a single to drive in Rupp with Muniz moving to second and Rupp scoring. After an out, Austin Greenfield (Omaha) entered to run for Muniz. Abner Vincenty (Cabo Rojo, P.R.) would ground out, but it was good enough for Greenfield to score to make it Peru State 7-1 at that point.
 
In the top of the fourth, the 'Cats would plate another run. Hasch singled to get on board and would go to second on a wild pitch. Hasch would then move to third on a passed ball. After an out, Rupp singled to left to score Hasch to put the score at 8-1.
 
Clarke would get three of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth making the score 8-4.
 
The 'Cats would get those three runs back in the top of the fifth. Banuelos singled to short to start the inning. After an out, Banuelos was picked off at first. Tavarez got on with a single and then Hasch walked. After a pitching changing, Cendejas doubled to drive in Tavarez with Hasch stopping at third. Rupp followed with a single to drive in the base runners for what would be the final Peru State runs.
 
Peru State would have several other opportunities to score as they left runners stranded in all of the rest of the frames. However, Clarke would add one in the sixth and three in the seventh, but could not catch the Bobcats.
 
The 'Cats scored their 11 runs on 18 hits and committed three errors. The Pride scored their eight runs on 15 hits and had two miscues.
 
Cendejas led the Bobcats by going four for six with four RBI. Hasch and Rupp each had three hits while Vincenty and Banuelos each had two hits. Rupp added three RBI.

Alberto Rosario

Alberto Rosario (Carolina, P.R.) picked up his fifth win of the season after throwing the first six innings. Rosario allowed 13 hits, 8 runs – 7 earned, and struck out 12. Zack Pinkerton (Beatrice) threw the next two outs and struck out two. Tyler Wheelock (Omaha) threw one inning and allowed two hits and struck out one. Ricky Broxson (Panama City, Fla.) threw one out. Carlos Gonzalez (Gurabo, P.R.) tossed the final inning and struck out two.

Upcoming Contests
 
The Bobcats will have a pair of Heart double headers coming up on Friday and Saturday.
 
On Friday, the 'Cats will be in Atchison, Kan., to face Benedictine at 1 p.m. The Ravens are 20-8 on the year and are 12-7 in the Heart South.
 
Baker (Kan.) will be the opponent for the Bobcats on Saturday when the teams square off at 1 p.m. The Wildcats are 18-21 overall and are 8-11 in the Heart South.
