Statesmen Softball Sweeps Peru State

(Peru, Neb.) – It was a sweep for the home team as the William Penn Statesmen softball team took a pair of games from the visiting Peru State Bobcats on Sunday.
 
The Statesmen won the first game 1-0 and then run-ruled the Bobcats in the second game 10-2 in six innings.
 
With the pair of wins, William Penn improved to 15-13 overall and 6-2 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart). Peru State falls to 3-17 on the year and 2-10 in conference play.

It was a pitcher's duel in the first game with the only run being scored by the Statesmen in the bottom of the fifth inning.

William Penn scored that run on five hits and did not commit any errors. The 'Cats had two hits and one miscue.
 
Takia Walker (Enterprise, Ala.) and Jordyn Jimenez (Syracuse, Utah) each recorded a single for the Bobcats.
 
Alana Krieser was on the hill for the Bobcats and suffered the loss. Krieser allowed just five hits, one earned run, and struck out one.

The Statesmen scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first as they plated four.

Peru State would get on the board in the top of the third. Alena Montoya (Lakewood, Colo.) singled thru the hole at shortstop and would go to second when Shelbi Audsley (Prescott Valley, Ariz.) reached on a walk. After an out, Jimenez would reach on a fielder's choice with Montoya moving to third and Audsley being forced out. Montoya would actually score on the play as there was a wild throw.

William Penn would get a run in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to 5-1.

In the top of the fourth, after an out Alyiah Franco (Delano, Calif.) doubled to deep right. Ally Hazen (North Platte) followed with a double to deep left-center to drive in Franco for what would be Peru State's final run.

The Statesmen would add three in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth to win 10-2.

William Penn scored its ten runs on 15 hits and had one error. Peru State scored its two runs on five hits and committed two errors.

Walker, Jimenez, Franco, Hazen, and Montoya each had one hit for the Bobcats. Hazen had the lone RBI.

Morgan Ritchie (Lincoln) started the game for the 'Cats and was tagged for the loss. She allowed three hits and four earned runs. Taylor Moya (Keenesburg, Colo.) came in to throw four innings. Moya gave up eight hits, four earned runs, and struck out two. Krieser came in the sixth and did not record an out. She gave up four hits and two earned runs.

Upcoming Contests

The Bobcats will be at home for a pair of three double headers this week.

On Tuesday, the 'Cats will host Graceland (Iowa) at 2 p.m. The Yellowjackets are 8-11 on the season and are 1-7 in the Heart.

MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) will be the opponent on Friday for a double header beginning at 3 p.m. The Pioneers are 5-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

On Sunday, April 7, Evangel (Mo.) will be the opponent for a double header starting at 1:30 p.m. The Crusaders are 10-10 for the 2019 season and are 1-7 in the Heart.
