Hot-Shooting Benedictine WBB Runs Past Peru State

(Peru, Neb.) – When a team shoots better than 50% from the floor, there is a good chance they are going to win a game. That's what happened Thursday night as the visiting Benedictine (Kan.) Ravens made 52.5% of their field goals and 50% of their three-point tries in route to an 87-50 win over the Peru State women.
 
For the Ravens, they improved to 11-6 on the season and are now 6-5 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart). Peru State women's fall to 2-13 and 1-10 in conference action.
 
First Quarter Action
 
The Ravens scored the first eight points of the game before Alyssa Marsh-Contreras (Bellevue) made a three-pointer off an assist from Claire Cudney (Marysville, Kan.) at the 7:22 mark. Benedictine would lead by as many as 13 late at 20-7 before Marsh-Contreras hit a trey to end the quarter off an assist from Allison Tichy (Bellevue). Benedictine led 20-10 at the end of the first stanza.

Second Quarter Action
 
Benedictine would continue to extend its lead in the second period and had double the score on the Bobcats by halftime. The Ravens led 44 to 22 at the end of 20 minutes of play.
 
Third Quarter Action
 
Peru State played the Ravens pretty evenly for most of the third quarter as they only trailed by 24 with 2:12 left. Benedictine would, however, outscore the 'Cats 8-1 to lead 68-37 to end the stanza.
 
Fourth Quarter Action
 
The fourth quarter was similar to the third as the Bobcats played Benedictine close to even as the Ravens outscored the 'Cats 19 to 13 in the period. Beth Hall (Graceville, Fla.) hit a pair of free throws for Peru State to end the game.

In addition to shooting well from the floor, Benedictine made 16 of 21 free throws for 76.2%. Peru State struggled shooting, in particular, close to the bucket, as they made just 17 of 57 for 29.8%. The 'Cats shot slightly better from distance making 6 of 20 for 30%. At the charity stripe, the Bobcats connected on 10 of 16 tries for 62.5%.
 
The Ravens had a slight rebounding edge as they grabbed 37 boards compared to 30 for the 'Cats. Benedictine doubled up the Bobcats in assists as they finished with 16.
 
Peru State committed 17 turnovers while the Ravens had 14. The Bobcats were credited with the lone blocked shot. Benedictine finished the contest with eight steals while Peru State had five.
 
Peru Player Statistics
 
Marsh-Contreras was the lone Bobcat to finish in double figures as she had a game-high 17 points. Hall and Keaundra Washington (Omaha) each added six points.
 
Cudney was the leading rebounder on the night as she grabbed eight boards. Giovanna Silva (Brazilia, Brazil) and Maria Alcantara (Recife, Brazil) each grabbed five boards.
 
Brooke Maeda (Honolulu) dished out three assists while Tichy and Washington each handed out two. Jordan Salas (Winfield, Kan.) was credited with the lone block. Alcantara led the team with two steals.
 
Upcoming Contests
 
Peru State will be at home for its next two games. On Saturday, Jan. 12, Clarke (Iowa) will be the opponent. The Pride are presently 10-6 overall and are 5-6 in the Heart having dropped a contest Thursday night at home to Culver-Stockton (Mo.).
 
Between the women's and men's games Saturday, the Peru State Foundation and the athletic department will be recognizing its Bobcat alumni in attendance.
 
On Wednesday, January 16, Grand View (Iowa) will be the foe at 5:30 p.m. The Vikings are currently 7-10 on the season and 5-6 in conference play.
