Bobcat Baseball Splits Opening Double Header with WPU

(Peru, Neb.) – Both games of the opening double header between Peru State and William Penn (WPU) saw decent pitching efforts by the respective pitching staffs.
 
The Bobcats took game one 3-1 while the Statesmen came back with a 2-1 decision in the second game.
 
The 'Cats are now 27-17 on the season and 17-12 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) North Division. William Penn is 14-29 on the year and 7-21 in the Heart North.
 
Game One Action
 
The Statesmen scored their only run in the bottom of the second inning.
 
Peru State tied the game in the top of the fourth. Joshua Banuelos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) singled to right and would go to second on a sacrifice bunt by Gianfranco Garlobo (Carolina, Puerto Rico). Bryan Ventura Castro (Carolina, Puerto Rico) singled thru the hole at second base to drive in Banuelos to tie the game.

The only other scoring would come in the top of the sixth inning. After an out, Ventura Castro reached on an error, but would be forced out at second when Eric Ocasio (San Juan, Puerto Rico) reached on a fielder's choice. Jaime Del Hoyo (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) would enter to run for Ocasio. Darren Hasch (Destin, Fla.) singled to left with Del Hoyo moving to second. Del Hoyo would eventually score on the play as there was an error with Hasch moving to second. Seth Thomason (Holt, Fla.) singled to right with Hasch scoring to make it 3-1.
 
The Bobcats scored their three runs on seven hits and did not commit any errors. WPU scored their one run on three hits and had three errors.
 
Banuelos was the only Bobcat to have more than one hit as he went two for four. Ventura Castro and Thomason were each credited with one RBI.
 
Alberto Rosario (Carolina, Puerto Rico) was the winning pitcher. Rosario threw a complete game allowing just three hits, one earned run, and struck out 12 – a season high.

Game Two Action
 
The second game was a pitcher's duel as well, but it took three Statesmen pitchers to get the win.
 
WPU would score their two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.

Peru State would score their only run in the top of the sixth inning. Garlobo reached on a wild throw and then went to second with a stolen base. Ventura Castro hit a singled to left-center to drive in Garlobo, but that would be all the 'Cats could muster.
 
William Penn scored their two runs on four hits and had two errors. Peru State scored their one run on four hits and had three miscues.
 
Garlobo was the only Bobcat to have two hits as he went two for three. Ventura Castro was the only RBI to be counted.
 
Eddy Tavarez Cabrera (San Cristobel, Dominican Republic) threw a complete game and was tagged for the loss. Tavarez Cabrera allowed four hits, two earned runs, and struck out nine.

Upcoming Games
 
The same two teams are playing a double header on Saturday in Oskaloosa beginning at 1 p.m.
 
Peru State has enough conference wins and will be playing in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship which will begin on Wednesday, May 2, in Ozark, Mo. The tournament pairings will not be able to be determined until the final games are completed on Sunday.
