Peru State Softball Sweeps College of St. Mary

(Peru, Neb.) – The Peru State softball team evened their season mark with a sweep over the visiting College of St. Mary (CSM) Flames on Sunday.
 
The Bobcats took the first game 9-5 and then rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning to go ahead and then win the second game 9-7.
 
Peru State is now 2-2 on the year while the Flames fell to 0-6.

In the bottom of the first, Shelbi Audsley (Prescott Valley, Ariz.) reached with a walk. After a double play, Tyler Farrell (Brandon, Fla.) homered over the center field fence on a 2-2 count to make it 3-1.
 
Peru State would add another run in the bottom of the second. Megan Hartman (Lincoln) singled to left-center and went to second on a misplayed grounder and then went to third on a passed ball. After an out, Elizabeth Nelson (Adams) singled to shallow right to drive in Hartman. The Bobcats would strand two, but trailed just 3-2 at the end of the second inning.
 
In the bottom of the third, after two outs, Rachel Carlos (Kaneohe, Hawaii) doubled to left-center. Hartman reached on a walk. Ally Hazen (North Platte) singled to center to drive in Carlos for the only run of the inning which tied the game at 3-3.
 
The Bobcats would strike again in the bottom of the fourth. After Regan Kirby (Gretna) singled thru the hole at shortstop. After an out, Kirby advanced to second on a wild pitch. Alexis Paulo-Meyers (Waianae, Hawaii) came to the plate and hit a two-run home run over the center field fence on a 1-2 count to put Peru State up 5-3 after four innings.
 
Peru State would add some insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Carlos would walk, but would be forced out on a fielder's choice which put Hartman on at first. Hazen came up and smacked a home run over the center field fence on a 0-1 count to put the 'Cats in front 7-3.
 
CSM would cut into the lead by scoring two runs in the top of the sixth to make it 7-5.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, the Bobcats would add some insurance runs. After an out, Paulo-Meyers homered for the second time in the game to make it 8-5 on a 1-1 count. After another out, Carlos singled to left. Sadi Howes (Denver) entered to run and immediately stole second. Hartman reached on a walk and then Hazen reached on an error. Howes was able to score on the error to put Peru State up 9-5.
 
Peru State did not allow the Flames to score in the top of the seventh as they left two on base.
 
The Bobcats scored their nine runs on 12 hits and committed three errors. CSM scored their five runs on eight hits and had two miscues.
 
Paulo-Meyers, Carlos, and Hazen each had two hits for the Bobcats. Hazen led the team with four RBI while Paulo-Meyers was credited with three. Farrell and Nelson each had one RBI.
 
Taylor Moya (Keenesburg, Colo.) threw 6 innings and earned the win. Moya allowed 7 hits, 5 runs – 1 earned, and struck out 5. Morgan Ritchie (Lincoln) tossed the final inning. Ritchie allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.

After an out, Farrell reached on a walk. On Carlos's single, Farrell scored as there was an error on the throw. Carlos ended up at third on the play. Hartman stepped to the plate and hit a home run over the center field fence on a 0-1 count to make it 3-0 Peru State.
 
The Bobcats would add a run in the bottom of the second. After an out, Paulo-Meyers singled to left and then went to second on a stolen base. On a fly out, Paulo-Meyers advanced to third. Carlos reached on a walk as did Hartman to load the bases. Sandy Garcia (Strasburg, Colo.) also reached on a walk and was credited with an RBI to put the 'Cats up 4-0.
 
CSM would come up and tie the game in the top of the third with four runs.
 
Peru State would leave the bases loaded in both the third and fourth innings without scoring.
 
In the top of the fifth, the Flames added three runs to lead 7-4.
 
The Bobcats would find a way to win in the bottom of the sixth inning when they had they biggest output of the season thus far. Plus, they did so with two outs.
 
Garcia started things off with a single to the infield. Ritchie followed with a single with Garcia stopping at second. After an out, Moya singled to center to load the bases. Kirby would reach on a fielder's choice as Garcia was thrown out at home. Paulo-Meyers would double to deep left-center to drive in Ritchie and Moya to make it 7-6 with Kirby stopping at third. Farrell reach on an error while both Kirby and Paulo-Meyers scored to make it 8-7 Bobcats. Howes came in to run for Farrell. Carlos singled up the middle with Howes stopping at third. Hartman reached base on another Flames' error to give Peru State a two-run cushion.
 
In the top of the seventh, CSM challenged but the Bobcats held them without scoring as the Flames stranded two.
 
Peru State scored its nine runs on 11 hits and had three errors. The Flames scored their seven runs on nine hits and had four errors.
 
Paulo-Meyers, Carlos, Hartman, and Garcia each had two hits to lead the Bobcats. Hartman was credited with three RBI while Paulo-Meyers and Farrell each added two RBI.
 
Hartman started the game on the mound and threw 4.1 innings. She allowed 6 hits, 7 runs – 3 earned, and struck out 1. Ritchie finished the game and earned the win after throwing 2.2 earnings. She allowed 3 hits while not allowing any runs and struck out 4.

Mother Nature permitting, the Bobcats are to head to Hillsboro, Kan., on Tuesday to face Tabor in a double header which has been moved to 2:30 p.m. The Bluejays are presently 3-11 on the year.
 
On Wednesday, the 'Cats are to face the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth, Kan., for a double header to begin at 1 p.m. The Spires are now 2-13 having one just one of their last seven games.
 
If the weather does not hold up, the Bobcats will most likely not play until the weekend when they will open Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) play at Canton, Mo., against Culver-Stockton. The double header with the Wildcats is to begin at 1 p.m. Culver-Stockton has started the season with a 1-6 mark.
