Peru State Baseball Sweeps Bethany

(Peru, Neb.) – The Peru State baseball team was able to pick up a pair of non-conference wins Wednesday in Lindsborg, Kan., over the Bethany College Swedes.
 
The Bobcats took game one 6-4 and then came back to take the second game 10-4.
 
With the pair of wins, the 'Cats improved to 14-5 on the season. The Swedes fell to 12-13 on the year.

First Game Action
 
Peru State got on the board first in the top of the first inning. After an out, Joshua Banuelos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) reached on a walk and then went to second when Gianfranco Garlobo (Carolina, Puerto Rico) was hit by a pitch. After the second out, Edwin Muniz (Dorado, Puerto Rico) singled to shallow right to score Banuelos to make it 1-0 at that point.
 
The Swedes took the lead in the game in the bottom of the second by scoring two.
 
After a scoreless third and fourth, the 'Cats would tie the game in the top of the fifth. After an out, Zach Nolin (Bonifay, Fla.) reached on a walk and would go to second when Banuelos singled to shallow left. Garlobo would walk to load the bases. On Bryan Ventura Castro's (Carolina, Puerto Rico) sacrifice fly, Nolin scored to tie the game at 2-2.
 
The Bobcats would regain the lead in the top of the sixth. Eric Ocasio (San Juan, Puerto ) reached on a walk and then the Swedes had a pitching change. Chaz Dunn (Falls City) bunted and reached first with Ocasio stopping at second. Cragin Missak (Bellevue) came in to run and eventually was picked off while Dunn stole second base. After the second out, Alfredo Barroso singled thru the hole at second to score Dunn to put Peru State up 3-2 at that point.
 
The 'Cats would add some much-needed insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Banuelos started the inning with a single to right-center. After an out, Ventura Castro tripled to deep right-center to drive in Banuelos. Muniz reached on a walk and then Ocasio doubled deep down the left-field line to drive in Ventura Castro with Muniz stopping at third. On Dunn's ground out, Muniz scored to make the game 6-2.

Bethany would score two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it would not be enough as the Bobcats won 6-4.
 
Peru State scored their six runs on seven hits and had two errors. Bethany scored their four hits on eight runs and did not commit any errors.
 
Banuelos was the only Bobcat to have two hits. Ventura Castro led the way with two RBI.
 
Andrew Robinson (Imperial Beach, Calif.) threw 6.1 innings and earned the win. Robinson allowed 8 hits, 4 earned runs, and struck out 4. Ricky Broxson (Panama City, Fla.) tossed 0.2 innings for the save.

Game Two Action
 
The Bobcats jumped on the Swedes early in the second game.
 
In the top of the first, after an out, Banuelos walked and would go to third on Garlobo's single up the middle. Banuelos would eventually score on an error with Garlobo moving to second. Ventura Castro would reach on a walk. After an out, Ocasio singled to score Garlobo to make it 2-0.

In the top of the second, Robinson singled to shallow left. After a pitching change, there was a strike out. Robinson would then steal second. Banuelos would then reach on a walk as would Garlobo to load the bases. After the second out, Muniz was hit by a pitch to drive in Robinson. Ocasio singled up the middle to drive in Banuelos and Garlobo and the 'Cats led 5-0 at that point.
 
The Swedes would get on the board with one run in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 5-1.
 
In the top of the third, after an out, Robinson singled to third. Nolin would reach on a walk with Robinson moving to second. Banuelos singled to shallow left-center to load the bases. Garlobo was hit by a pitch with Robinson scoring. Ventura Castro would reach on a fielder's choice with Nolin scoring to make it 7-1 at that time.
 
After an out, Dunn walked in the top of the fourth and went to third on a wild throw. Jaime Del Hoyo (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) doubled to deep left-center to drive in Dunn to put the Bobcats up 8-1.
 
Bethany would score two in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-3.
 
In the top of the fifth, the 'Cats would add a couple of runs. Banuelos started the inning with a single to shallow right. He would move to second with a ground out. Ventura Castro reached on a walk and then Muniz would be hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ocasio singled thru the hole at shortstop to drive in Banuelos and Ventura Castro for Peru State's ninth and tenth runs.
 
The Swedes would add run in the bottom of the fifth for the final run of the game as the 'Cats won 10-4.

Peru State scored its ten runs on nine hits and had one error. Bethany scored their four runs on six hits and committed two errors.
 
Ocasio led the team by going three for five and drove in five RBI. Robinson and Banuelos each added two hits.
 
Javier Vazquez (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico) threw the first five innings and earned the win. Vazquez allowed five hits, four earned runs, and struck out six. Jose Mendez (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) threw one inning and struck out two. Felix Rodriguez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) threw the seventh inning. Rodriguez allowed one hit and struck out two.

Upcoming Games
 
Peru State is hosting a big four-game series this weekend with Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) North foe Clarke (Iowa). The double headers on Saturday and Sunday will begin at 1 p.m. each day. The Pride are presently 7-12 on the year, but are 6-2 and tied with Peru State Heart North.
 
Then, on Tuesday, March 27, the Bobcats will travel to York to face the Panthers in one nine-inning game beginning at 3 p.m. York is currently 10-18.
