Bobcat Baseball Wins Series with Mount Mercy

(Peru, Neb.) – Mother Nature continues to not play nice and do what the weather forecasters want. But, that did not stop the Peru State Bobcat baseball team from taking three of four from the visiting Mount Mercy Mustangs over the weekend.
 
The 'Cats swept the games on Saturday 4-2 and 7-4. On Sunday, the Bobcats took game one 9-2 before falling in the night cap 8-4.
 
With the three wins, Peru State improved to 12-5 overall and are now 6-2 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) North Division.
 
Mount Mercy fell to 11-14 on the season and are 3-5 in the Heart North.

The Mustangs scored first as they put up their two runs in the top of the first, but that would be all they would muster in game one.
 
Peru State would tie the game in the bottom of the third. Chaz Dunn (Falls City) singled to start the frame and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zach Nolin (Bonifay, Fla.). Jordan Kelly (Omaha) doubled to deep left to drive in Dunn. On a passed ball, Kelly advanced to third. On a ground out by Josh Banuelos (Moreno Valley, Calif.), Kelly score to tie the game at 2-2.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, the 'Cats would get the winning runs. Nolin singled to right-center and then Kelly moved Nolin to third with a single to shallow left-center. Kelly would go to second with a stolen base. Banuelos singled to shallow center to score Nolin with Kelly moving to third. Kelly would eventually score on Gianfranco Garlobo's (Carolina, Puerto Rico) ground out.
 
The Bobcats scored their four runs on eight hits and committed two errors. The Mustangs scored their two runs on five hits and did not commit any errors.
 
Kelly went three for three and had one RBI to lead Peru State. Banuelos had two RBI while Garlobo was credited with the other RBI.
 
Alberto Rosario (Carolina, Puerto Rico) threw a complete game and earned his fourth win of the season. Rosario gave up five hits, two runs – none earned, and struck out seven.

Saturday Game Two Action
 
Like the first game, Mount Mercy scored first. This time they scored one in the second and one in the third to lead 2-0.
 
The Bobcats would tie it up in the bottom of the third. Nolin was hit by a pitch to start the frame and would go to second when Kelly bunted and reached on a base hit. Banuelos would reach on an error to load the bases. Garlobo singled to third to score Nolin and kept the bases loaded. Bryan Ventura Castro (Carolina, Puerto Rico) reached on a fielder's choice with Kelly scoring to knot the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, the 'Cats would score three runs which would prove to be enough for the win.
 
Edwin Muniz (Dorado, Puerto Rico) singled to shallow left-center to start the inning. Jaime Del Hoyo (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) moved Muniz to second with a sacrifice bunt. Dunn singled to left with Muniz moving to third. Nolin singled to shallow center to score Muniz with Dunn stopping at second. Kelly would reach on a fielder's choice with Dunn actually scoring on the wild throw. Nolin would advance to third on the play. Nolin would eventually score on a fly ball out by Banuelos. The Bobcats would lead 5-2 at that point.
 
Peru State would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. Garlobo reached with a walk and would go to third on a single by Ventura Castro into right-center. Eric Ocasio (San Juan, Puerto Rico) hit a sacrifice fly to deep right-center to score Garlobo making it 6-2.
 
The Mustangs would score one run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to three at 6-3.
 
The 'Cats would add another run in the bottom of the sixth. Kelly would reach on a dropped third strike and then Banuelos would also reach on an error with Kelly going all the way to third on the play. Garlobo hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Kelly to make it 7-3 at that point.
 
Mount Mercy would score one in the top of the seventh and left the bases loaded as their last batter struck out.
 
Peru State scored their seven runs on ten hits and had one error. Mount Mercy scored their four runs on seven hits and committed three errors.
 
Garlobo, Ventura Castro, and Muniz each had two hits to lead Peru State. Garlobo led the team with two RBI while Banuelos, Ventura Castro, Ocasio, and Nolin were each credited with one RBI.
 
Eddy Tavarez Cabrera (San Cristobel, Dominican Republic) won his fourth game after throwing 5.2 innings. Tavarez Cabrera allowed 5 hits, 3 runs – 2 earned, and struck out 9. Cragin Missak (Bellevue) tossed 0.1 innings. Missak did not allow any hits and struck out 1. Ricky Broxson (Panama City, Fla.) tossed the final inning. Broxson allowed 2 hits, 1 earned run, and struck out 1.

Sunday Game One Action
 
For the first time in the series, the Bobcats scored first in the first game on Sunday.
 
In the bottom of the first, after an out, Banuelos reached on an error and went to second when Garlobo reached on a walk. After the second out, both base runners advanced on a wild throw. Ocasio followed with a single to left to drive in both Banuelos and Garlobo to make it 2-0.

Peru State would break the tie in the bottom of the third. Kelly was hit by a pitch and went to second with a stolen base. Banuelos doubled to deep right-center to drive in Kelly and the 'Cats never trailed from that point on.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Banuelos reached with a walk and went to third when Garlobo singled to right. Ventura Castro hit a three-run home run over the left field fence on the first pitch he saw to make it 6-2.
 
The Bobcats would add some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. After a pitching change, Dunn reached with a walk. Dunn would go to second with a stolen base. Nolin reached on an error with Dunn moving to third. Kelly singled to deep center to drive in both base runners. Kelly would advance on the play on another error. After a strikeout, Garlobo hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Kelly making the score 9-2.
 
Peru State scored their nine runs on seven hits and committed two errors. The Mustangs scored their two runs on five hits and had four miscues.
 
Garlobo was the only Bobcat to have more than one hit as he finished two for two in the game. Ventura Castro led the team with three RBI while Kelly and Ocasio each had two RBI.
 
Cory Royer (Las Vegas) threw a complete game for the win. Royer allowed five hits, two runs – one earned, and struck out five.

SUNDAY GM 1 GAME BOOK
 
Sunday Game Two Action
 
The 'Cats got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Kelly doubled down the left field line and went to third when Banuelos singled down the same line. Kelly would eventually score on the wild throw to put Peru State up 1-0 at that point.
 
In the top of the second, the Mustangs plated three to take a 3-1 lead.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Peru State regained the lead. Ventura Castro singled up the middle and went to second when Ocasio reached on a walk. Muniz hit a three-run home run over the left field fence on a 0-1 count to make it 4-3 Bobcats.
 
Mount Mercy would tie it at 4-4 with a run in the top of the sixth.

The Mustangs would get a grand slam home run in the top of the seventh for their 8-4 win.
 
Mount Mercy scored their eight runs on five hits and committed one error. Peru State scored four run on seven hits and had two miscues.
 
Ventura Castro was the only Bobcat to have more than one hit as he finished two for three. Muniz led the team with three RBI.
 
Carlos Gonzalez (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) started the game for the Peru State and was tagged for the loss. Gonzalez went 6.1 innings and allowed 4 hits, 7 runs – 6 earned, and struck out 7. Joshua Santiago (Carolina, Puerto Rico) threw the final 0.2 innings. Santiago gave up 1 hit and 1 earned run.

Upcoming Games
 
The Bobcats will play a pair of seven-inning non-conference games tomorrow in Lindsborg, Kan., against the Bethany Swedes. Bethany is presently 12-11 on the year.
 
This weekend, on March 24 and 25, the 'Cats will be hosting a four-game series with Clarke (Iowa) with the double headers each day starting at 1 p.m. While the Pride's overall record is 5-12, they are 4-2 in the Heart North and are just behind the Bobcats in the standings.
