Culver-Stockton Softball Sweeps Conference Opener over Bobcats

(Peru, Neb.) – It was the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) opener for a pair of "Cats" teams with the Wildcats getting the best of the deal. The Culver-Stockton (C-SC) Wildcats swept the visiting Peru State Bobcats on Saturday in Canton, Mo.
 
The Wildcats won the first game 10-2 and then came from behind to win the second game 8-7.
 
With the sweep, Culver-Stockton improved to 4-7 on the year and start Heart action with a 2-0 mark. Peru State fell to 2-8 having dropped six straight and start conference play with a 0-2 record.
 
First Game Action
 
Peru State drew first blood in the double header as Regan Kirby (Gretna) started things off for the Bobcats with a single to third base. On a ground out, Kirby advanced to second. Rachel Carlos (Waianae, Hawaii) doubled to right center to drive in Kirby. After the second out, Ally Hazen (North Platte) singled to drive in Carlos to make it 2-0 Peru State.

Culver-Stockton would score all the runs they would need in the bottom of the second as they plated six to lead 6-2 at that point. The Wildcats would add two more in the bottom of the third to lead 8-2. C-SC added one run in the bottom of the fourth and another run in the bottom of the sixth which allowed for the mercy rule to be invoked.
 
The Wildcats scored their ten runs on 12 hits and did not commit any errors. Peru State scored their two runs on eight hits and had one error.
 
Kirby and Carlos each had two hits to lead the Bobcats with Carlos and Hazen being credited with one RBI each.
 
Morgan Ritchie (Lincoln) started on the mound and suffered the loss. Ritchie threw 2.1 innings and allowed 8 hits, 8 earned runs, and struck out 1. Taylor Moya (Keenesburg, Colo.) tossed the next 2.2 innings. Moya allowed 3 hits, 1 earned run, and struck out 3. Carson Ebeling (Diller) threw the final out. Ebeling allowed 1 hit and 1 earned run.

Second Game Action
 
Again the 'Cats struck first in the top of the first. After an out, Tyler Farrell (Brandon, Fla.) walked. Carlos followed with a double with Farrell stopping at third. Megan Hartman (Lincoln) singled to third to load the bases. Hazen singled down the left field line to drive in Farrell and Carlos with Hartman stopping at third. After the second out, Elizabeth Nelson (Adams) walked. Moya reached on a fielder's choice with Hartman scoring. After a pitching change, Audsley singled to drive in Hazen to put the Bobcats up 4-0.
 
Peru State held the lead until the fifth inning when the Wildcats tied the score at 4-4.

In the top of the sixth, Moya singled to start the inning and then stole second. Audsley followed with a single with Moya moving to third. After an out and then a pitching change, Farrell homered to center field to put Peru State up 7-4.
 
Culver-Stockton would add two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to one at 7-6. Then, after holding the Bobcats scoreless in the top of the seventh, the Wildcats scored two in the bottom of the final inning to win 8-7.
 
The Wildcats scored their eight runs on 11 hits and did not have any errors. Peru State scored their seven runs on 13 hits and had three miscues.
 
Farrell, Carlos, Hartman, and Audsley each had two hits to lead the Bobcats. Farrell was credited with three RBI why Hazen added two RBI.
 
Hartman was tagged for the loss as she threw five innings. Hartman allowed ten hits and eight runs – four earned. Ritchie threw the final inning and allowed one hit and struck out one.

The Bobcats are playing in Lawrence, Kan., on Sunday against Haskell Indian Nations University in a non-conference double header beginning at 2:30 p.m. The Fighting Indians are 4-5 on the season having won three in a row.
 
Peru State will then play another non-conference double header on Thursday at home as they host Ottawa (Kan.) at 2 p.m. The Braves, who were receiving votes in the initial coaches' poll, are 14-6 on the year having lost their last three games in a row while playing some of the top teams in the country.
