Peru State Baseball Goes 2-1 in Joplin/Miami Tournament

(Peru, Neb.) – The Bobcat baseball team evened their season mark at 3-3 after going 2-1 in a tournament played in both Joplin, Mo., and Miami, Okla., this past weekend.
 
The start of the tournament for Peru State was delayed and did not start until late Saturday night after cancelling one of their games that day against Robert Morris (Ill.). The 'Cats opened the weekend with a 3-1 win over Waldorf (Iowa) which was the 700th career win for head coach Wayne Albury.
 
On Sunday, the Bobcats came back and opened with a 13-3 win over Viterbo (Wisc.) before falling to Columbia (Mo.) 13-6.
 
For Waldorf, it was their first game of the year. Viterbo fell to 2-10 on the season and Columbia is now 8-2.

The first two innings were scoreless but Peru State had left two on base in the bottom of the second.

In the bottom of the third, Jordan Kelly (Omaha) doubled to left-center. After two outs, Gianfranco Garlobo (Carolina, Puerto Rico) doubled to deep left-center to drive in Kelly to make the game 1-0.
 
Later, in the bottom of the fifth, Zach Nolin (Bonifay, Fla.) started the inning with a double to right. Joshua Banuelos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) singled up the middle to drive in Nolin to put the score at 2-0. Again, the 'Cats would leave two on base.
 
The Warriors would score their lone run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 2-1.
 
Peru State would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Edwin Muniz (Dorado, Puerto Rico) reached on a walk and Chaz Dunn (Falls City) entered to run at that point. Dunn went to second on a missed catch. Later Dunn would score on another Waldorf error to make it 3-1 Bobcats.
 
Waldorf would strand two on base in the top of the seventh as the 'Cats prevailed 3-1.
 
Peru State scored their three runs on eight hits and had one error. Waldorf scored their one run on two hits and committed three errors.

Garlobo led the team with two hits while six others had one hit each. Nolin, Muniz, and Kelly were each credited with one RBI.
 
Alberto Rosario (Carolina, Puerto Rico) pitched a no-hitter through five innings and struck out 11 of the 19 batters he faced for his first win of the season. Cragin Missak (Bellevue) tossed one inning and gave up one hit and one unearned run. Ricky Broxson (Panama City, Fla.) pitched one-third of an inning and allowed one hit. Tyler Wheelock (Omaha) threw the final two outs and did not allow any hits while earning the save.

The Waldorf win gave Peru State head coach Wayne Albury his 700th career win.

Peru State scored one in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. The V-Hawks responded with two in the top of the second before the Bobcats tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning.
 
After a scoreless third inning, the 'Cats scored one in the bottom of the fourth to lead 3-2. Viterbo would tie it at 3-3 in the top of the fifth before Peru State got the bats going in the bottom of the fifth as they added four runs.

In the top of the sixth, Peru State held Viterbo scoreless and then pounded out six big runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 13-3 win.
 
The Bobcats scored their 13 runs on 14 hits and committed three errors. Viterbo scored their three runs on four hits and also had three miscues.
 
Garlobo, Ventura Castro, Eric Ocasio (San Juan, Puerto Rico) each had three hits in the game. Garlobo hit a double and home run. Ocasio had two home runs. Dunn added two hits – one of which was a double. Seth Thomason's (Crestview, Fla.) lone hit was a home run. Garlobo and Ocasio each were credited with four RBI.
 
Eddy Tavarez Cabrera (Puerto Rico) threw five innings for the win. He allowed three hits, three runs – none earned, and struck out eight. Joshua Santiago (Carolina, Puerto Rico) tossed one inning and did not allow any hits while striking out two. Carlos Gonzalez (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) threw the final inning. Gonzalez did not allow any hits and struck out two.

The 8-2 Cougars jumped on Peru State first by scoring four runs in the first inning and added another one in the top of the second. The Bobcats would score three in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 5-3.
 
Columbia added another three runs in the top of the third with Peru State getting just one run back in the bottom of the third. Through three innings, the Cougars led 8-4.

Neither team scored in the fourth or fifth innings. In the top of the sixth Columbia added three more runs with Peru State countering with two in the bottom of the inning to make it 11-6. The Cougars would add two more runs in the top of the seventh for the 13-6 win.
 
The Cougars scored their 13 runs on 17 hits and committed three errors. Peru State scored their six runs on nine hits and had two miscues.
 
Nolin and Darren Hasch (Destin, Fla.) each had two hits to lead Peru State. Ocasio had two RBI to lead the Bobcats in that category.
 
Cory Royer (Las Vegas) started the game and suffered the loss. Royer threw 5.1 innings and allowed 15 hits, 11 runs – 10 earned, and struck out six. Andrew Robinson (Imperial Beach, Calif.) tossed the final 1.2 innings. Robinson gave up two hits, two earned runs, and struck out one.

Upcoming Games
 
The Bobcats will be back in Joplin this coming weekend on Friday and Saturday where they will play LSU Alexandria and Jamestown (N.D.) each day. On Friday the game times are noon and 5 p.m. Then, on Saturday, the games will be at 12:30 and 3 p.m. LSU Alexandria is presently 2-9 having lost their last five games. Jamestown is off to a 7-0 start, but all of those games were played in the fall season. This will be their opening weekend in spring ball.
