Baker Snaps Peru State MBB Home Win Streak

(Peru, Neb.) – It was a similar case to the women's game as the visiting team was hot from the floor and almost as good from long range. That was the case Wednesday night as the visiting Baker Wildcat men's basketball team made 56.4% of their field goals in route to an upset 94-86 win over Peru State.

The Wildcats also made 13 of 24 three-point tries for 54.2% which helped them snap the Bobcats' 2018 home winning streak.
 
Baker improved to 11-13 on the year and are now 5-11 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) South Division.

Quantice Hunter led Peru State with 20 points
 
Andre Frazier-Stanley (Los Angeles) hit a bucket in the paint on an assist from LJ Westbrook to start the scoring with just 24 seconds off the clock. The Wildcats would quickly tie it, but Terry Moore Jr. (Kansas City, Kan.) would hit a trey off an assist from Marley Biyendolo (Melbourne, Australia).
 
Peru State would eventually increase its lead to five on three different occasions with the last coming at 16-11 after Quantice Hunter (Chicago) made a bucket in the paint at the 14:29 mark.
 
Baker would then go on an 11-point run to lead 22-16 with just under 11 minutes left in the first half. Hunter would hit a trey to stop the run before the Wildcats countered with a three-pointer of their own.
 
The Wildcats would have their first double-digit lead at 32-22 before Westbrook hit a bucket in the paint at the 7:25 mark. Baker would still lead by ten later at 46-36 before Moore Jr. would score five straight points to cut the deficit to five at 46-41 with 1:53 left in the first 20 minutes.
 
Later, Moore Jr. hit a bucket in the paint after grabbing his own miss to pull Peru State within four at halftime as they trailed 48-44.
 
Second Half Action
 
Peru State would work itself back to a tie at the 15:34 point in the second half at 56-56 after Biyendolo knotted it with a bucket on an assist from Hunter. However, the Wildcats went off with a 16-2 run to make it 72-58 with just over ten minutes left in the game.
 
The Bobcats would keep fighting and with 1:30 remaining in the game, a field goal and one of two free throws by Frazier-Stanley would pull the Bobcats within five at 85-80.
 
Baker would then close out the game outscoring the Bobcats nine to six for the 94-86 win.

Team Statistics
 
Both teams actually shot the ball well, but Baker was more than ten percent better than Peru State in its percentages. The Wildcats made 31 of 55 field goals for 56.4% and were nearly as hot from long range as they made 13 of 24 for 54.2%. Baker connected on 19 of 27 from the free throw line for 70.4%. The Bobcats made 30 of 64 field goals for 46.9% and finished hitting 10 of 24 from behind the arc for 41.7%. At the charity stripe, Peru State made 16 of 22 for 72.7%.
 
The Wildcats held a huge rebounding edge as they grabbed 36 boards compared to 24 for the Bobcats. Both teams dished out 15 assists.

Baker did have more turnovers as the Wildcats finished with 12 while Peru State only had four. The Bobcats blocked five shots compared to one for Baker. Peru State also had seven steals while the opponents grabbed two.
 
Individual Statistics
 
Peru State had four players finish in double figures and were led by Hunter who had 20 points on 8 of 16 shooting. Moore Jr. added 19 points while Nolan Cass (Spring, Texas) finished with 15 as he went 5 of 10 from three-point range. Frazier-Stanley added 14 points.
 
Westbrook led Peru State with ten rebounds with Frazier-Stanley and Moore Jr. each adding four rebounds. Westbrook almost finished with another triple-double as he had nine points and also had a game-high nine assists. Hunter also dished out four assists.
 
Frazier-Stanley blocked four shots with Cass being credited for the other block. Moore Jr. led the team with a game-high three steals.
 
Upcoming Contests
 
There are three regular-season contests remaining for the Bobcats with the first two coming at home. On Saturday, Feb. 17, the Bobcats will host Graceland (Iowa) at 4 p.m. Presently, the Yellowjackets have improved to 18-9 on the year and are 12-4 in the Heart North – two games ahead of the Bobcats.
 
Prior to the contest, eight Bobcat seniors, along with one cheerleader and one women's basketball player, will be recognized before the 4 p.m. game.
 
On Wednesday, Feb. 21, Peru State will host Clarke (Iowa) at approximately 7:30 p.m. The Pride are currently 12-15 overall and are 5-11 in the Heart North.
 
Finally, the Bobcats will travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to face Mount Mercy in the final regular season game of the year at 4 p.m. The Mustangs are 12-14 at this point and are 7-9 in the Heart North.
