(Peru, Neb.) – Forty minutes of basketball was not enough for the Peru State and Baker women's basketball teams Tuesday night. Neither was 45 minutes. It took a double overtime in Baldwin City, Kan., to decide the final outcome with the Wildcats claiming a 99-93 win over the visiting Bobcats.
Baker improved to 7-1 overall with the win and 2-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart). The Bobcats, despite the gallant effort, dropped to 1-5 on the season and are now 0-2 in the conference.

A basket by
Claire Cudney (Marysville, Kan.) after grabbing an offensive rebound to put it back in started the scoring in the contest. After the Wildcats made a trey,
Giovanna Silva (Brazilia, Brazil) hit a bucket in the paint to give the Bobcats the lead which they would not relinquish during the first quarter.
Peru State led by as many as eight at 20-12 after
Daspin Bruning (Everest, Kan.) hit a pair of free throws with 2:57 left in the quarter.
Baker had pulled back within two at 24-22 after the first ten minutes.
Second Quarter Action
A trey by
Alyssa Marsh-Contreras (Bellevue) started the second quarter for Peru State coming off an assist from Cudney. A bucket by
Jordan Salas (Winfield, Kan.) stretched the lead to seven at 29-22.
The Wildcats kept the lead within single-digits until Cudney made a pair of free throws at the 4:14 mark to put the lead up to ten at 39-29. Marsh-Contreras hit bucket on a fast break to stretch the lead to 12.
Peru State would lead by as many as 13 after another pair of free throws by Cudney with 11 seconds left. Baker would get a bucket to close out the first half trailing 46-35.
Third Quarter Action
A basket by Marsh-Contreras and then one by
Maria Alcantara (Recife, Brazil) gave Peru State its largest lead of the night at 16 at 51-35 with 8:55 left in the third period.
The Wildcats would claw their way back into the contest and only trailed by five at 56-51 with 4:12 left in the third stanza. Marsh-Contreras would hit a pair of free throws and then drained a trey and the lead was back up to ten at 61-51 with 2:49 remaining.

Baker would get back within six at 63-57 by the time the quarter ended.
Fourth Quarter Action
The Wildcats would hit a trey to pull within three to start the final quarter – well, normally the final ten minutes. Cudney would hit a bucket which was followed by a pair of free throws by Silva to make it 67-60.
Keaundra Washington (Omaha) then hit a trey which was followed by one by Marsh-Contreras and suddenly the Bobcats were back up by 13 with 7:25 left in the game.
Baker then went on a 13-0 run to tie the game at 73-73 with 4:28 left in the game. Marsh-Contreras put Peru State back in front with a pair of free throws only to see the Wildcats score the next four points to lead 77-75 with 2:22 to go.
Both teams were a little cold down the stretch, but Silva would hit a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to tie the game and eventually force overtime.
Overtime One Action
The Wildcats would score the first three points of OT before Marsh-Contreras hit a bucket at 3:11 in the first OT.
Brooke Maeda (Honolulu) would follow with a pair of free throws to give the Bobcats a one-point lead at 81-80.
Baker would continue to lead and did have an 86-83 advantage with 28 seconds left. Marsh-Contreras would drain a trey to tie with 15 seconds left. A late Baker shot was rebounded by Cudney, but Peru State could not get off a shot.
Overtime Two Action
Marsh-Contreras gave the Bobcats the first points in the second OT with Cudney following making one of two free throws.
Peru State would still lead at 91-89 before the Wildcats would score seven straight to lead 96-91 with less than a minute to play. Marsh-Contreras would score what would be the final Peru State points before Baker finished out the game with three free throws.

Team Statistics
Both teams shot the ball well in the game from the floor. The Wildcats made 33 of 79 field goals for 41.8% which included making 6 of 27 from long range for 22.2%. At the charity stripe, Baker made 27 of 33 for 81.8%. Peru State made 29 of 66 for 43.9% and connected on 9 of 23 from behind the arc for 39.1%. At the free throw line, the Bobcats made 26 of 35 for 74.3%.
Peru State actually out-rebounded the taller Wildcats 49-38 and finished with three more assists as they totaled 15. The Bobcats did have ten more turnovers than Baker as they committed 26 miscues.
Baker blocked three shots while Peru State was credited with two. The Wildcats grabbed 11 steals compared to nine for the Bobcats.
Peru Individual Statistics
Marsh-Contreras had one of the highest-scoring games in Peru State's history as she finished with 41 points on 13 of 21 shooting including making six of ten from long range. In addition, she made nine of 14 free throws. Bobcat records show that Linda Shepard, a Hall of Fame member, scored 49 points against now-closed Tarkio (Mo.) during the 1984-85 season.
The 41 points by Marsh-Contreras are the most by a NAIA DI player so far this season.
Silva and Cudney also finished in double figures as they had 14 and 12 points respectively. Alcantara added eight points.
Cudney finished with a game-high 16 rebounds to have another double-double on the season. Alcantara and Marsh-Contreras each had seven rebounds.
Marsh-Contreras and Cudney each dished out four assists with Alcantara handed out three.
Lauren Beath (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Salas each blocked one shot. Marsh-Contreras had a game-high five steals while four others each finished with one.
Upcoming Contests
Peru State will be playing an exhibition contest on Saturday against one of its sister colleges – Wayne State in Wayne at 4 p.m. The NCAA DII Wildcats are presently 3-1 on the season.
The Bobcats will be back in conference action on Monday, Nov. 26, when they host Graceland (Iowa) at 5:30 p.m. The Yellowjackets are off to a good start with a 7-1 mark and are 1-1 in the Heart.
