(Peru, Neb.) – The Peru State volleyball team surprised the undefeated Grand View team Monday night during their senior night and took the first set from the Vikings. However, Grand View was able to maintain its perfect season mark as they went on to take the next three sets to gain the final regular season game win.

Grand View won 20-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-14 to improve to 29-0 overall and 18-0 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart). The Vikings were ranked second in the most recent NAIA poll. With the loss, the Bobcats finished the regular season with a 12-20 record for the year and finished 8-10 in conference play.

First Set Action

The Bobcats started the set with back-to-back kills by
Yorgelys Jaspe (San Carlos, Venezuela) off an overpass and
Cami Ruiz (Bogota, Columbia) whose kill came off an assist from
Hannah Burianek (Lincoln). The Vikings would eventually go ahead, but their largest lead would be just one and the last time they led was at 5-4. A kill by Jaspe off an assist from Burianek would knot the score. An attack error by the Vikings would put the 'Cats in front 6-5. A service ace by
Darlene Quinonez Holguin (Las Cruces, N.M.) was followed by another Grand View attack error.

The Vikings would pull within one at 11-10, but
Kira Shapiro (Omaha) would get a kill from Quinonez Holguin to make it 12-10. Back-to-back service aces by Burianek and a kill from Ruiz would give Peru State its largest lead at that point at 15-10. Grand View would eventually close the contest to two points at 22-20 before two attack errors gave the 'Cats set point.
Nadja Janjevic (Podgorica, Montenegro) and Shapiro would team up for a block to give Peru State the 25
th point and the set win.

Second Set Action

Peru State actually had the early lead in the second set. A kill by Janjevic from Quinonez Holguin started the set. After a Viking point, Janjevic put down another kill – this time from Burianek and then the Vikings had an attack error. However, the 3-1 Bobcat lead would disappear. The 'Cats were still within three later at 12-9 after a kill by
Mallory Matthies (Omaha), but Grand View responded with two points. The Vikings would go on an 11-4 run to take the second set.

Third Set Action

A kill by
Taylor Thompson (Norfolk) from Burianek would tie the second set at 1-1. Then an attack error by the Vikings put Peru State up. The early part of the set would remain close with the 'Cats actually leading at 9-8 after a Janjevic kill. Four straight points by Grand View gave the Vikings the lead for good. The closest the Bobcats would be late in the set was at 19-15 after Jaspe and Quinonez hooked up for a kill.

Grand View never trailed in the fourth set as they jumped to an early 8-1 lead and the Bobcats could not come back from the deficit.

Team Statistics

The Vikings outhit the Bobcats .250 to .221 which for the 'Cats was a good hitting percentage despite the loss.

One of the big differences was that Grand View had eight service aces with four errors compared to the Bobcats who served up three aces against three errors.

Peru State did have one more dig than Grand View as the Bobcats finished with 56. The Bobcats also finished with one more team blocks as they had six.

Individual Statistics

Jaspe finished with a game-high 17 kills and hit .500. Thompson added eight kills while Janjevic finished with six and hit .357.

Burianek led the team with 20 assists while Quinonez Holguin added 14.

Burianek had two service aces with Quinonez Holguin adding the other one.

Claire Cudney (Marysville, Kan.) and Thompson each finished with a game-high 17 digs. Quinonez Holguin added seven digs.

Janjevic and Shapiro led the team with one solo block and two block assists each. Jaspe added one solo block.

Postseason Tournament Play

Peru State wrapped up the third seed in the North Division of the Heart last Friday night after their win over William Penn (Iowa).
The Bobcats will take on the second seed from the South Division – Benedictine – in Atchison, Kan., Saturday night at 5:30 p.m.
