Grand View Baseball Topples Bobcat in Heart Opener

(Peru, Neb.) – It was not the start the 'Cats were looking for in the Heart of America Athletic Conference post-season tournament opener in Ozark, Mo.
 
The Grand View (Iowa) Vikings scored six runs in the top of the first that saw some uncharacteristic types of plays and a Bobcat injury. The Vikings would add three in the second and one more in the top of the fourth to lead 10-0 before Peru State would finally get on the board.

Grand View went on to win 13-6 and moved on in the winners' bracket to face Clarke (Iowa) at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Bobcats will face Culver-Stockton (Mo.) at 10 a.m. as the Wildcats lost to Clarke on Friday.
 
The Vikings improved to 29-21 on the year while the Bobcats fell to 32-19.
 
Game Action
 
Bryan Ventura Castro (Carolina, Puerto Rico) tripled to start the bottom of the fourth and came in to score Peru State's first run when Gianfranco Garlobo (Carolina, Puerto Rico) singled to left. Mark McGinnity (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) singled to right with Garlobo advancing to third. After two outs, Edwin Muniz (Dorado, Puerto Rico) doubled to deep center to bring in Garlobo and McGinnity. Muniz was thrown out stretching to third to end the inning, but Peru State put up three in in the inning to make it 10-3 at that point.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, after an out, Chaz Dunn (Falls City) singled to center. Joshua Banuelos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) doubled to deep right-center to drive in Dunn to make it 10-4.
 
The Vikings would add three more runs in the top of the sixth to stretch their lead to 13-4.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, Banuelos would single to center to start the frame. Banuelos would be forced out on a fielder's choice when Ventura Castro reached first. The same would happen to Ventura Castro when Garlobo reached first. McGinnity would single to center with Garlobo advancing to third. Sterling Rupp (Grand Island) singled to the infield with Garlobo scoring to make in 13-5.

The last score of the game would come in the bottom of the ninth. After an out, Jordan Kelly (Omaha) would reach on an error. Dunn doubled to deep left with Kelly advancing to third. Banuelos hit a sacrifice fly deep down the right field line with Kelly scoring and Dunn advancing to third. But, that would be it and Grand View won 13-6.

Grand View scored their 13 runs on 20 hits and had one error. Peru State scored their six runs on ten hits and committed two errors.
 
McGinnity, Dunn, and Banuelos each had two hits to the lead the team. Banuelos and Muniz each had two RBI while Garlobo and Rupp each had one RBI.
 
Alberto Rosario (Carolina, Puerto Rico) suffered through his worst start of a game in 2017 for Peru State. Rosario was tagged for the loss after throwing just one-plus innings. Rosario allowed six hits, eight runs – six earned, and struck out two. Alfredo Barroso (Hialeah, Fla.) threw four innings. Barroso allowed ten hits, five earned runs, and struck out two. Travis Navarro (San Jacinto, Calif.) threw three innings and allowed just three hits and no runs. Hassan Westbrook (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) tossed the final inning. Westbrook allowed just one hit.

The Bobcats will be playing Culver-Stockton at 10 a.m. in the first elimination game on Saturday. The winner will advance to play the loser of the Central Methodist (Mo.) versus MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) game which is the last game on Saturday. Game time Sunday will be 1 p.m.
