Peru State Takes Three of Four from Culver-Stockton

(Peru, Neb.) – The Bobcat baseball team included their long week of eight games by taking three of four from Culver-Stockton in Canton, Mo., on Saturday and Sunday.
 
In Saturday's games, the Bobcats took the first one 4-0 while the Wildcats took the second 1-0 by plating a run in the bottom of the seventh.
 
Peru State won 7-3 and 14-8 on Sunday. With the three wins, the Bobcats improved to 29-15 overall and 19-9 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart). The Wildcats fell to 23-24 on the season and 13-15 in conference play.
 
Saturday Game One Action
 
Peru State first scored in the top of the third inning. Edwin Muniz (Dorado, Puerto Rico) was hit by a pitch and Caleb Dameron (Henderson, Colo.) entered to run for Muniz. Joshua Banuelos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) laid down a sacrifice bunt with Dameron advancing to second. Bryan Ventura Castro (Carolina, Puerto Rico) singled to drive in Dameron to make it 1-0. Gianfranco Garlobo (Carolina, Puerto Rico) singled with Ventura-Castro stopping at second. Mark McGinnity (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) reached on a fielder's choice with Garlobo forced out at second and Ventura Castro going to third. Ventura Castro would eventually score on the play which resulted in a throwing error. At that point, Peru State led 2-0.

The only other scoring would come in the top of the seventh. Darren Hasch (Destin, Fla.) doubled and went to third when Jordan Kelly (Omaha) singled. Kelly then stole second. Muniz walked to load the bases. The Wildcats would turn a double-play to force out Hasch at home and get Banuelos. Ventura Castro would reach on a field error and Muniz would score on the play as did Kelly to put the Bobcats up 4-0 at that point.
 
The Wildcats would go down in order in the bottom of the seventh and Peru State prevailed in the first game.
 
The Bobcats scored their four runs on five hits and did not commit any errors. Culver-Stockton had three hits and committed three errors.
 
Ventura Castro, Garlobo, McGinnity, Hasch, and Kelly each had one hit with Ventura Castro being credited for the lone RBI.
 
Alberto Rosario (Carolina, Puerto Rico) was on the mound and pitched a complete game shutout. Rosario allowed just three hits and struck out nine in getting his sixth win of the season.

Saturday Game Two Action
 
The Bobcats outhit the Wildcats in the contest but could not put the hits together at the right time to score any runs.
 
Peru State had its best scoring opportunity in the top of the first as they left the bases loaded and had two outs to work with at that point. The Bobcats also left two on base in the top of the sixth.
 
Culver-Stockton scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh when their leadoff batter had a triple to start the inning. The base runner would score on a wild pitch for the 1-0 win.
 
The Wildcats scored their one run on just one hit and had one error. The Bobcats had five hits and one miscue.
 
Garlobo, McGinnity, Scout Villanueva (Bakersfield, Calif.), Muniz, and Banuelos each had one hit for Peru State.
 
Despite pitching an excellent game, Ben Carr (Omaha) was tagged for his second loss of the season. Carr threw six-plus innings and allowed just one hit and one earned run while striking out seven.

The Bobcats would next score in the top of the fourth inning. McGinnity singled and then went to second when Brandon Sedell (Davie, Fla.) singled. The base runners advanced when Villanueva laid down a sacrifice bunt. Hasch followed with a double to bring home base runners and at the end of the half inning, Peru State led 3-0.
 
Culver-Stockton would tie it up in the bottom of the fourth when they plated three runs.
 
In the top of the fifth, the Bobcats would get on board for what would be the final runs of the game.
 
Banuelos singled and scored when Ventura Castro tripled. Garlobo singled to drive in Ventura-Castro to make it 5-3. After an out, Sedell doubled with Garlobo stopping at third. Villanueva would reach on a fielding error which allowed both base runners to score making it 7-3 at that point.
 
While that was the final scoring, Peru State left the bases loaded in the top of the sixth.
 
Peru State scored their seven runs on 12 hits and had one miscue. Culver-Stockton scored their three runs on eight hits and had two errors.
 
Ventura Castro, Sedell, Hasch, and Banuelos each had two hits to lead the Bobcats. Hasch led the team with three RBI.
 
Andrew Robinson (Imperial Beach, Calif.) threw the first five innings for Peru State and picked up his third win of the season. Robinson allowed six hits, three runs – one earned, and struck out two. Tyler Wheelock (Omaha) threw two innings. Wheelock allowed just two hits.

Sunday Game Two Action
 
As the series progressed, so did the runs.
 
Peru State started off the final game of the series by scoring in the top of the first. After two outs, McGinnity singled as did Sedell. Villanueva walked to load the bases. Hasch walked to drive in McGinnity. Kelly tripled to clear the bases to put the Bobcats up 4-0.
 
The Wildcats would score three in the bottom of the second to close the gap to 4-3.
 
The Bobcats would get the runs back in the top of the third. Sedell singled and went to second when Villanueva singled. Hasch doubled to drive in both runners to make it 6-3. Hasch would advance on an error. Kelly hit a sacrifice fly to make it 7-3.
 
Culver-Stockton added three runs in the bottom of the third to again pull within one at 7-6.
 
Neither team would score in the fourth, but the Bobcats would come up big again in the top of the fifth. Villanueva walked to start the inning. Hasch singled to move Villanueva to second. Villanueva would move to third on a wild pitch. Kelly singled to drive in Villanueva advanced to third. After a pitching change, Kelly advanced to second and Hasch scored on a wild pitch. Muniz singled to drive in Kelly. Banuelos reached on an error with Muniz advancing to second. On a ground out, the base runners advanced. Jaime Del Hoyo (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) hit a sacrifice fly with Muniz scoring to make it 11-6 at that point.

The Wildcats would get one run back in the bottom of the fifth to pull within three at 11-7.
 
In the top of the sixth, Sedell singled with Sterling Rupp (Grand Island) entering to run for Sedell after the play. Rupp advanced to second on a throwing error. Villanueva singled with Rupp stopping at third. Hasch hit a sac fly with Rupp scoring. Kelly followed with a single with Villanueva stopping at second. After another out, Banuelos drove in Villanueva with a single to make it 13-7.
 
Culver-Stockton would score one run in the bottom of the frame to get within five at 13-8.
 
In the top of the seventh, after two outs, Rupp walked and later came home when Villanueva doubled to make the final score 14-8.
 
The Bobcats scored their 14 runs and 16 hits and committed six errors. Culver-Stockton scored their eight runs on 12 hits and had three miscues.
 
Sedell, Villanueva, and Kelly each had three hits to lead the Bobcats while Hasch and Banuelos each added two hits. Kelly led the team with five RBI while Hasch added four.
 
Alfredo Barroso (Hialeah, Fla.) tossed the first four innings and earned his third win of the year. Barroso allowed eight hits, six runs – four earned, and struck out two. Cragin Missak (Bellevue) threw one inning. Missak allowed two hits and one earned run. Christian Sanchez (Ponce, Puerto Rico) threw the final two innings and allowed two hits and one unearned run.

SUNDAY CULVER-STOCKTON GM 2 BOX SCORE
 
Upcoming Games
 
This the final week of the regular season for the Bobcats.
 
On Tuesday, they will host the 12th-ranked Tabor (Kan.) Bluejays in a non-conference double header beginning at 2 p.m. Tabor is 34-12 on the year.
 
The final Heart series will be this Thursday and Friday when the Bobcats host Grand View (Iowa) in double headers scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. each day. The Vikings are 26-19 overall and are 17-11 in conference play which puts them in third in the north division behind Clarke (Iowa) and Peru State.
 
Peru State will be then participating in the Heart Conference Post-Season Championships which will be played May 3-9 in Ozark, Mo., at the US Baseball Park. The tournament will be hosted by Evangel.
