(Peru, Neb.) – In a wild, windy, weekend which included a lightening delay on Saturday, the Peru State Bobcat baseball team picked up three of four wins from the visiting William Penn (Iowa) Statesmen.

The 'Cats took the first game on Friday 4-3 before losing 11-8. On Saturday, the Bobcats took the twin bill 11-10 and 17-12 in two slugfest contests.

Peru State improved to 24-12 overall and are 14-6 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart). William Penn fell to 18-23 on the season and 7-17 in conference action.

Friday Game One Action
Â
The Bobcats got on the board in the bottom of the first inning.
Bryan Ventura Castro (Carolina, Puerto Rico) singled to short.
Gianfranco Garlobo (Carolina, Puerto Rico) singled to shallow right with Ventura Castro forced out on the play. After a second out,
Brandon Sedell (Davie, Fla.) hit a two-run home run over the left field fence on a 2-0 count to put the 'Cats up 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, after two outs,
Darren Hasch (Destin, Fla.) homered over the center field fence on the first pitch he saw to make it 3-0 Peru State.

William Penn would score two in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to one at 3-2.

Peru State would start the bottom of the fifth with a single by
Joshua Banuelos (Moreno Valley, Calif.). Ventura Castro bunted and reached first on the play with Banuelos moving to second. Garlobo also bunted to load the bases. After two outs,
Scout Villanueva (Bakersfield, Calif.) reached on a walk to drive in Banuelos to make it 4-2 at that point.

The Statesmen would add a run in the top of the sixth to make the score 4-3 which would hold up for the Bobcat win.

Peru State scored their four runs on nine hits and committed two errors. The Statesmen scored their three runs on nine hits and had one miscue.

Ventura Castro went three for four to lead the 'Cats. Garlobo added two hits. Sedell was credited with two RBI while Villanueva and Hasch each had one RBI.
Alberto Rosario (Carolina, Puerto Rico) gained the win after throwing five innings. Rosario allowed eight hits, two earned runs, and struck out three.
Christian Sanchez (Ponce, Puerto Rico) tossed the final two innings and earned the save. Sanchez gave up one hit, one earned run, and struck out three.

Friday Game Two Action
The Statesmen scored two runs in the top of the first inning and held that lead until the bottom of the second.

Hasch would hit a home run after the first out over the right field fence on a 1-1 count to make it 2-1 William Penn.

The Bobcats would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Mark McGinnity (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) singled to shallow left and went to second when Sedell singled to shallow right-center. Villanueva bunted and reached with a base hit to load the bases.
Caleb Dameron (Henderson, Colo.) entered to run for Villanueva who was catching. After an out,
Jordan Kelly (Omaha) singled to left with McGinnity scoring and Sedell thrown out at home. Dameron had advanced to third on the play.
Edwin Muniz (Dorado, Puerto Rico) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Banuelos hit a single which scored Dameron and Kelly and the 'Cats then led 4-2 after four innings.

In the top of the sixth, the Statesmen scored four runs to gain the lead at 7-4.

Peru State would cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Villanueva homered to deep center on a 1-1 count. But, that was all the 'Cats could muster in the inning and still trailed 7-5.

The Statesmen would plate another four runs in the top of the seventh to go up 11-5, but the Bobcats would try to scratch their way back in the bottom of the seventh.

Ventura Castro started the inning with a homer to deep left-center on a 2-2 count. Garlobo singled to shallow left and then McGinnity hit a two-run blast to deep center on a 0-0 count to make it 11-8. The next three batters went down in order and the Statesmen prevailed 11-8.

William Penn scored their 11 runs on 15 hits and did not commit any errors. Peru State scored their eight runs on 13 hits and also did not commit any errors.

McGinnity went three for four and had two RBI while Garlobo and Villanueva each added two hits. Banuelos was credited for two RBI as well.

Ben Carr (Omaha) started on the mound and lasted 4 innings. Carr gave up 5 hits, 2 earned runs, and struck out 4.
Ryan Hirschfeld (Brush, Colo.) got one out but allowed 1 hit, 1 earned run, and struck out 1.
Tyler Wheelock (Omaha) went 1.1 innings and was tagged with the loss. Wheelock gave up 4 hits, 4 earned runs, and struck out 2.
Cragin Missak (Bellevue) threw the final 1.1 innings. Missak allowed 5 hits, 4 earned runs, and struck out 2.

Saturday Game One Action

The first game on Saturday experienced a lot of wind and a lightening delay.

In the top of the first, the Statesmen scored one run to go up 1-0.

After an out in the bottom of the first, Garlobo singled up the middle. After a second out, Sedell hit a two-run home run over the left field fence on a 0-0 count to make it 2-1. Then, on a 1-2 count, Villanueva hit a homer over the left field fence to make it 3-1 Peru State.

The Bobcats would add some additional runs in the bottom of the second. Kelly singled to third to start the inning and then Muniz hit a two-run home run over the left field fence on a 1-2 count to put the 'Cats up 5-1 at that point.

Then, the lightening delay occurred and it apparently sparked William Penn as they plated eight runs in the top of the third to go up 9-5.

In the bottom of the third, Peru State would get a couple runs back. Sedell started with a walk and after an out, Hasch hit a two-run home run on a 1-2 count to make it 9-7.

The 'Cats would score four runs in the bottom of the fourth. After an out, McGinnity singled to short and then went to third when Sedell singled to shallow left-center. Villanueva also singled to drive in McGinnity and Sedell stopped at third. Dameron entered to run for Villanueva. Hasch would reach on a William Penn error while Sedell scored. Kelly followed with a single up the middle with Dameron scoring and Hasch stopping at third. Muniz would reach on a walk to load the bases. Hasch would score on a wild pitch and the Bobcats led 11-9 at that point.

Kelly went three for four with one RBI to lead Peru State. McGinnity, Sedell, and Villanueva each added two hits. Sedell, Villanueva, and Muniz were each credited with two RBI.

(Fort Walton, Fla.) started on the mound and lasted 2.2 innings. Degafferelly gave up 7 hits, 4 earned runs, and struck out 1.
Brock Secondine (Navarre, Fla.) did not record an out and gave up 2 earned runs.
Hassan Westbrook (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) threw 2.1 innings and was credited with the win. Westbrook allowed 2 hits, 3 earned runs, and struck out 3.
Andrew Robinson (Imperial Beach, Calif.) threw 1 inning and gave up 2 hits and 1 earned run. Sanchez tossed the final inning and did not allow any hits while striking out 2 for the save.

The Statesmen did score a run in the top of the first to start things in the second game.

Peru State would match that run in the bottom of inning. Ventura Castro bunted and reached with a base hit. After an out, Ventura Castro would advance to second on a wild pitch. McGinnity would reach with a walk. Sedell singled thru the hole at second base and it was enough to drive in Ventura Castro to tie the score at 1-1.

In the bottom of the second, after an out, Muniz singled to shallow right with Dameron coming in to run for Muniz after the play. Banuelos hit a sacrifice bunt and was put out with Dameron moving to second. On a wild pitch, Dameron moved to third. On another wild pitch, Dameron scored to put the Bobcats up 2-1 at that point.

That lead was short-lived as William Penn would score two in the top of the third to lead 3-2. But, the 'Cats would respond on the bottom of the inning.

McGinnity singled up the middle to start the inning and went to second when Sedell singled thru the hole at second base. Villanueva reached on a walk to load the bases. Hasch was hit by a pitch to drive in McGinnity for the first run of the inning to tie it at 3-3. Kelly hit a sacrifice fly which was deep enough to score Sedell and Villanueva moved to third. Hasch would advance to second on the throw. Muniz singled up the middle to drive in both Villanueva and Hasch. Dameron came in to run for Muniz after his single. After a pitching change, Banuelos singled thru the hole at second with Dameron stopping at third. Ventura Castro doubled to deep left-center to drive in the base runners. At the end of the third, Peru State lead 8-3.

Neither team scored in the fourth although both teams had opportunities to do so.

In the top of the fifth, the Statesmen scored three to pull within two at 8-6.

Peru State responded in a big fashion on the bottom of the fifth.

William Penn started the inning with a different pitcher. Garlobo stepped to the plate and singled up the middle. McGinnity followed with single to shallow right with Garlobo moving to third.
Chaz Dunn (Falls City) entered to run for McGinnity. Sedell was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Julien Hunt
(Brooklyn, N.Y.) entered to run for Sedell. After an out, Hasch doubled over the right field fence to drive in Garlobo and Dunn with Hunt being stopped at third. Kelly reached on a bobble to again load the bases. Muniz singled to left-center to drive in Hunt and Hasch with Muniz moving to second on the throws. Dameron re-entered to run for Muniz. Banuelos was hit by a pitch to give the 'Cats two base runners. Ventura Castro single thru the hole at shortstop to score Kelly with Dameron stopping at third. Garlobo doubled to deep right-center to bring home both Dameron and Banuelos and Ventura Castro went to third on the play. After a pitching change, McGinnity came back to the plate and singled to shallow left to drive in both Ventura Castro and Garlobo. While the 'Cats would not add any more runs, they had put nine runs on the board to lead 17-6 at that point.

In the top of the seventh, William Penn tried to make it interesting as they scored six runs and left two on base for the final score of 17-12.

The 'Cats scored their 17 runs on 16 hits and committed four errors. William Penn scored their 12 runs on 14 hits and had one miscue.

Ventura Castro, McGinnity, and Muniz each had three hits to lead the Bobcats. Garlobo and Sedell each added two hits. Muniz drove in four runs while Ventura Castro and Hasch were each credit with three. Garlobo and McGinnity each drove in two RBI.

Six different pitchers saw time on the mound for Peru State.
Javier Vasquez (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico) started the game and went 4.1 innings and was eventually credited with the win. Vasquez allowed 6 hits, 4 earned runs and struck out 3.
Alfredo Barroso (Hialeah, Fla.) was credited with 1 out. Barroso allowed 2 hits and 2 earned runs. Westbrook threw 1.1 innings and did not allow any hits and struck out 1.
Daniel Muniz (Miami, Fla.) did not record an out while allowing 2 hits and 2 runs – 1 earned.
Michael Demers (Blair) recorded 2 outs. Demers allows 3 hits and 4 runs – none earned. Wheelock recorded the final out. He allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.

Upcoming Games

Peru State will play eight Heart games this week which all have a major impact on the upcoming post-season conference tournament.
Â
On Tuesday, the Bobcats will be hosting Benedictine (Kan.) in a double header scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The Ravens are 27-16 overall and 16-6 in the conference. They have won three straight.
Â
Then the 'Cats will head out for a long three-day road trip where they will play Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On Friday, Peru State will face Clarke in Dubuque, Iowa, in a double header which was postponed earlier due to unplayable conditions. The first game will begin at noon on Friday. The Crusaders are currently on top of the league with a 34-7 overall record and are 18-3 in conference play. Clarke is presently ranked 11
th in the NAIA.

The weekend series will be played in Canton, Mo. Game time with Culver-Stockton each day is 1 p.m. The Wildcats are 21-20 overall and are at .500 in the Heart North at 11-11.Â
