Peru State Baseball Take Three from Mount Mercy

(Peru, Neb.) – The Bobcat baseball team came home from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, having won three of four games over the weekend over Mount Mercy.
 
Peru State won the first game on Saturday 4-2 and then dropped the second game 8-7. On Sunday, the 'Cats swept the Mustangs 15-2 and 5-2.
 
With the wins, the Bobcats improve to 20-8 overall and are now 10-4 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart). Mount Mercy fell to 13-22 on the season and 6-14 in conference play.

Neither team scored in the first two innings. In the top of the third, Joshua Banuelos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) reached on an error to start the inning. On a ground out, Banuelos made it to third base. Gianfranco Garlobo (Carolina, Puerto Rico) singled down the left field line to drive in Banuelos for the first run of the game.
 
The Mustangs would tie it in the bottom of the inning.
 
Peru State would get a double from Scout Villanueva (Bakersfield, Calif.) to start the fourth. Villanueva would then steal third. Darren Hasch (Destin, Fla.) singled to right center to drive in Villanueva to break the tie. After an out, Jordan Kelly (Omaha) reached on a fielder's choice with Hasch being forced out. Banuelos would follow with a double to deep right to score Kelly. Bryan Ventura Castro (Carolina, Puerto Rico) singled to left-center and it was deep enough to score Banuelos to put the 'Cats ahead 4-1.
 
Mount Mercy would score a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2 and that would be the only other scoring in the game.
 
The Bobcats scored their four runs on eight hits and had one error. Mount Mercy scored their two runs on five hits and also had one error.
 
Garlobo went two for three and had one RBI to lead Peru State.

Alberto Rosario

Alberto Rosario (Carolina, Puerto Rico) tossed a complete game of seven innings for the win. Rosario allowed five hits, two runs – one earned, and struck out four.

Saturday Second Game Action
 
A late comeback by the Bobcats in the second game was not enough as they dropped the contest in the bottom of the seventh.
 
Once again, neither team scored until the third inning.
 
Banuelos singled to center and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ventura Castro. After the second out, Mark McGinnity (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) singled to shallow center to score Banuelos to make it 1-0 Peru State.
 
The Mustangs would tie it in the bottom of the inning at 1-1.
 
In the top of the fourth, Edwin Muniz (Dorado, Puerto) singled to shallow left to start the inning. Caleb Dameron (Henderson, Colo.) came in to pinch run for Muniz. Kelly doubled to right-center with Dameron stopping at third. Banuelos reached on an intentional walk to load the bases. Ventura Castro reached first on a fielder's choice with Dameron scoring to put the Bobcats up 2-1.
 
Later, in the top of the sixth, the Bobcats would add to their lead. Hasch singled to left to start, but was put out on a fielder's choice when Muniz bunted and was safe at first. Dameron re-entered to run for Muniz. After the second out of the inning, Dameron stole second. Banuelos followed with a single with Dameron stopping at third. After a pitching change, Ventura Castro doubled to deep left-center to drive in the two base runners. At that point, Peru State led 4-1.

Mount Mercy would jump on the Bobcats for six runs in the bottom of sixth to take a 7-4 lead.
 
In the top of the seventh, McGinnity singled to shallow center with Chaz Dunn (Falls City) entering to run for McGinnity. Brandon Sedell (Davie, Fla.) singled to deep right with Dunn moving to third. Mathew Sontag (Davie, Fla.) entered to run for Sedell. Villanueva would then hit a three-run home run over the right field fence on a 1-1 count to tie the game at 7-7. Peru State would have other base runners, but a double play would end their hopes of adding any more runs.
 
The Mustangs would be able to push across a run in the bottom of the inning to take the game 8-7.
 
Mount Mercy scored their eight runs on nine hits and did not commit any errors. Peru State scored their seven runs on 13 hits and committed three errors.
 
Sedell went three for four to lead the 'Cats. McGinnity, Muniz, and Banuelos each added two hits for the Bobcats with Ventura Castro and Villanueva each being credited with three RBI.
 
Ben Carr (Omaha) started on the rubber for the Bobcats and threw 3.1 innings. Carr allowed 3 hits, 1 earned run, and struck out 2. Christian Sanchez (Ponce, Puerto Rico) threw 2 innings. Sanchez allowed 2 earned runs and struck out 2. Hassan Westbrook (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was up next and did not record an out. Westbrook allowed 1 hit and 2 earned runs. John Tellini (Pembrook Pines, Fla.) threw 0.1 inning and allowed 2 hits, 2 earned runs, and struck out 1. Cragin Missak (Bellevue) threw the final 0.2 inning. Missak was tagged for the loss as he allowed 3 hits and 1 earned run.

Peru State got things going right away in the first game on Sunday and kept it going.

Ventura Castro reached on a walk to start the first inning. He then stole second base. Garlobo doubled down the right field line to drive in Ventura Castro for the first run of the game. McGinnity reached on an error with Garlobo advancing to third. Sedell was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Villanueva reached on an error with Garlobo scoring. Hasch reached on a fielder's choice with McGinnity scoring and Villanueva being forced out at second. Kelly hit a sacrifice fly to left with drive in Sedell and the 'Cats led 4-0 after the first half inning.
 
Mount Mercy would score their only runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning to close the gap to 4-2.
 
In the top of the second, after an out, Ventura Castro reached with a walk. Garlobo also reached on a walk. McGinnity reached on a fielder's choice with McGinnity going to third and Garlobo being forced out at second. On a balk, Ventura Castro scored to increase Peru State's lead to 5-2.
 
After an out in the top of the third, Hasch reached on a walk. On a ground out, Hasch went to second. Muniz doubled to deep left and Hasch scored to make it 6-2.
 
In the top of the fourth, after an out, Garlobo reached on a wild throw. After another out, Sedell doubled to deep right-center to drive in Garlobo to put Peru State up 7-2.
 
It was wild top of the fifth inning for the Bobcats. Hasch started the inning with a double to deep right-center. Kelly doubled down the left field line to score Hasch. After a pitching change, Muniz reached on a walk, as did Banuelos to load the bases. Ventura Castro was hit by a pitch for the second run of the inning as Kelley scored. Garlobo hit a sacrifice fly to deep right-center to score Muniz. McGinnity doubled to deep left with Banuelos and Ventura Castro each scoring. After a second pitching change, Sedell singled to shallow center with McGinnity stopping at third. Villanueva singled thru the hole at second base with McGinnity scoring. Hasch was hit by a pitch to once again load the bases. Kelly singled thru the hole at shortstop to score Sedell. On a sacrifice fly by Muniz, Villanueva scored the eighth run of the inning which made it 15-2 Bobcats. This would be the final scoring of the first game on Sunday.

Peru State scored their 15 runs on ten hits and had two errors. The Mustangs scored their two runs on six hits and committed four errors.
 
Sedell and Kelly each had two hits to lead the team with Kelly leading the team with three RBI. Garlobo, McGinnity, Villanueva, and Muniz each added two RBI.
 
Tanner DeGafferelly (Fort Walton, Fla.) threw the first three innings and earned the win. DeGafferelly allowed four hits, two runs – none earned, and struck out one. Tyler Wheelock (Omaha) threw four innings in relief. Wheelock allowed just two hits and struck out three.

The Bobcats had to come from behind in the final game of the series for the win.
 
Mount Mercy scored their two runs in the bottom of the fourth forcing Peru State to work from behind.

The 'Cats were able to get one of those runs in the top of the fifth. After an out, Kelly reached on an error and would eventually go to third on two wild pitches. Muniz reached on a walk and then stole second to leave first base open. On a ground out, Kelly would score to make it 2-1 at that point.
 
In the top of the sixth, Garlobo would reach on a walk and would go to second on a wild pitch. McGinnity reached on a walk and Julien Hunt (Brooklyn, N.Y.) entered to run for McGinnity. On a ground out, Hunt would advance to second with Garlobo staying at third. Villanueva was issued an intentional walk to load the bases. On a passed ball, Garlobo would score to tie the game at 2-2.
 
In the top of the seventh, after an out, Banuelos singled to center. Jaime Del Hoyo (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) doubled shallow down the left field line with Banuelos stopping at third. On a wild pitch, Banuelos scored with Del Hoyo stopping at third. Garlobo singled to the infield with Del Hoyo scoring. Garlobo would move to second with a stolen base. McGinnity was issued an intentional walk. Sedell singled to right-center which was deep enough to score Garlobo and the 'Cats led 5-2 at that point.
 
It was not without drama in the bottom of the seventh as the Mustangs were able to load the bases, but could not push across a run and Peru State prevailed.
 
The Bobcats scored their five runs on five hits and had three miscues. Mount Mercy scored their two runs and had two errors.
 
Sedell was the only Bobcat with two hits. Sedell and Banuelos were each credited with one RBI.

Javier Vasquez

Javier Vasquez (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico) started on the mound for Peru State and threw 4.1 innings. Vasquez allowed 2 hits, 2 runs – none earned, and struck out 3. Brock Secondine (Navarre, Fla.) tossed 1.0 inning and did not allow any hits or runs and was credited for the win. Sanchez recorded 2 outs and did not allow any hits and struck out 1. Westbrook recorded 1 out. Wheelock threw the final 2 outs and earned the save while striking out 2.

Upcoming Games
 
Peru State will host a Heart double header make-up with Central Methodist (Mo.) on Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m. The tenth-ranked Eagles are 26-7 overall and are 11-3 in the Heart.
 
On Wednesday, Mother Nature permitting, the 'Cats will be heading to Wichita, Kan., to face Friends University in double header beginning at 3 p.m. The Cardinals are 23-15 on the season.
 
This Friday and Saturday, the Bobcats will be hosting Heart North Division foe William Penn in a pair of double headers scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. each day. The Statesmen are currently 17-20 overall and are 6-14 in the Heart.
