Bobcat Baseball Takes Three of Four from visiting Graceland

(Peru, Neb.) – The Peru State baseball team had enough gas to take three of four games from the visiting Graceland (Iowa) Yellowjackets this weekend. The 'Cats took the first three games 8-1, 4-0, and 13-12 before the tank ran a little low and Graceland took the final game 9-4 late Sunday afternoon.
 
With the three wins, Peru State improved to 14-5 overall and are now 7-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart). For the Yellowjackets, their record is now 5-19 and they won their first conference game and are now 1-7.

Saturday Game One
 
Peru State did all the damage they needed in the bottom of the second inning.
 
Brandon Sedell (Davie, Fla.) singled to left-center to start the inning. On a wild pitch, Sedell went to second. Darren Hasch (Destin, Fla.) singled to shallow right-center with Sedell advancing to third. Jordan Kelly (Omaha) doubled to deep left to drive in Sedell with Hasch stopping at third. Edwin Muniz (Dorado, Puerto Rico) was hit by a pitch. Caleb Dameron (Henderson, Colo.) came in to run for Muniz. Joshua Banuelos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) singled to shallow center with Hasch scoring to make it 2-0. Bryan Ventura Castro (Carolina, Puerto Rico) reached on an error with all three base runners scoring. After an out, Ventura Castro would score on a ground out to make it 6-0 Peru State.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, after an out, Muniz doubled to deep left-center with Dameron re-entering to run for Muniz. Banuelos would reach on a fielder's choice with Dameron being tagged out on the play. Ventura Castro singled to left with Banuelos stopping at second. Gianfranco Garlobo (Carolina, Puerto Rico) singled to left with Banuelos scoring and Ventura Castro stopping at second. Mark McGinnity (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) would single to left to drive in Ventura Castro for Peru State's eighth and final run.
 
Graceland would score its only run in the top of the seventh.
 
Peru State scored their eight runs on ten hits and had three errors. The Yellowjackets scored their one run on five hits and also had three miscues.
 
Kelly and Banuelos each had two hits to lead Peru State. Ventura Castro drove in three while McGinnity drove in two RBI.
 
Alberto Rosario (Carolina, Puerto Rico) threw six innings and allowed just two hits while striking out six. John Tellini (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) tossed the final inning. Tellini allowed three hits, one earned run and struck out one.

SATURDAY GM 1 GAME BOOK
 
Saturday Game Two
 
Saturday's second game was more of a pitching duel as neither team posed much of a threat until Peru State came to the plate in the bottom of the fourth.
 
Garlobo singled shallow down the left field line to start the inning. Garlobo was forced out on the next play when McGinnity reached on a fielder's choice. Sedell reached on a walk with McGinnity moving to second. Chaz Dunn (Falls City) entered to run for McGinnity. On a ground out, the base runners advanced. Jaime Del Hoyo (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) entered to run for Sedell at that point. Hasch reached on a bobble with Dunn scoring and Del Hoyo moving to third. Kelly followed with a single thru the hole at shortstop to drive in Del Hoyo with Hasch stopping at second. Muniz doubled to left-center with both base runners scoring to make it 4-0. This would actually be the only scoring in the game.
 
The 'Cats scored their four runs on six hits and committed one error. The 'Jackets had five hits and committed three errors.
 
Garlobo, Kelly, and Muniz each had two hits for Peru State with Muniz having two RBI. Kelly and Hasch were each credited with the other RBI.
 
Ben Carr (Omaha) was on the mound to start the game and was credited for the win. Carr tossed four innings allowing three hits, no earned runs and struck out three. Cragin Missak (Bellevue) threw two innings and allowed one hit and struck out one. Tellini threw the final inning and allowed one hit.

Sunday Game One
 
Sunday's first game was totally different than the games on Sunday as it produced a combined 25 runs and saw ten different pitchers.

The Bobcats got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. After an out, Garlobo singled to left. Then, after another out, Sedell singled to shallow right with Garlobo stopping at third. Scout Villanueva (Bakersfield, Calif.) reached on a walk to load the bases. Hasch also was walked to drive in Garlobo and the Bobcats led 1-0 at that point.
 
Graceland took a 3-1 lead after plating three runs in the top of the second. But, the Bobcats would respond in the bottom half of the second.
 
Muniz would reach on an error. After an out, Ventura Castro hit a two-run home run over the left field fence on a 0-1 count to tie the score at 3-3. Garlobo singled to right and went to second on McGinnity's single. Both base runners would advance on a passed ball and then Sedell would reach on a walk to load the bases. On a wild pitch, Garlobo scored and the other base runners advanced. Villanueva followed with a single to right to drive in McGinnity with Sedell stopping at third. Dameron would enter to run for Villanueva at that point. After a pitching change, Dameron stole second. Hasch would reach on a walk to again load the bases. Kelly walked to drive in Sedell and then on a passed ball, Dameron scored. At the end of two innings, Peru State led 7-3.
 
The Yellowjackets would score one in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 7-4. And again, Peru State would respond with what most would think would be a knock-out punch.
 
In the bottom of the third, Garlobo started the inning with a single to deep left. On a wild pitch, Garlobo advanced to second. On McGinnity's single, Garlobo would score. After an out, Villanueva hit a two-run home run over the right field fence on the first pitch he saw to make it 10-4 at that point. Hasch followed with a single to right and was put out on a fielder's choice with Kelly reaching base. Muniz singled to left with Kelly going to third on the throw as did Muniz who made it to second. On a passed ball, Kelly scored to put Peru State up 11-4.
 
Graceland would score three in the top of the fourth to cut the score to 11-7 at that point.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, after two outs, Sedell was hit by a pitch. On a passed ball, Sedell moved to second. Villanueva singled to shallow right with Sedell scoring to put the 'Cats ahead 12-7.

Bryan Ventura Castro had some
good plays in the outfield, but
was even better with his bat.
 
The Yellowjackets scored four in the top of the fifth to make it a one-run game at 12-11 and Peru State could not respond in the bottom of the fifth.
 
In the top of the sixth, Graceland tied it at 12-12 and left two base runners aboard.
 
Ventura Castro started the bottom of the sixth with a home run on the left field fence on a 1-1 count which proved to be the winning run.
 
Peru State scored its 13 runs on 16 hits and had two errors. Graceland scored their 12 runs on 11 hits and had one miscue.
 
Garlobo went four of five to lead the Bobcats while McGinnity and Villanueva each added three hits. Villanueva led the team with four RBI while Ventura Castro added three RBI.
 
Six different Bobcats took the mound for Peru State. Tanner DeGafferelly (Fort Walton, Fla.) threw the first 3.0 innings. DeGafferelly allowed 5 hits, 6 earned runs, and struck out 4. Alfredo Barroso (Hialeah, Fla.) threw 1.0 innings and allowed one earned run and struck out 1. Brock Secondine (Navarre, Fla.) went 0.2 innings. Secondine allowed 2 hits and 3 earned runs. Christian Sanchez (Ponce, Puerto Rico) had 1 out and allowed 1 earned run. Hassan Westbrook (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) went 0.2 innings. Westbrook allowed 2 hits and 1 earned run. Missak threw the final 1.1 innings and earned the win. He allowed just 1 hit and struck out 2.

SUNDAY GM 1 GAME BOOK
 
Sunday Game Two
 
Graceland took the early lead in the final game of the four-game series. The Yellowjackets scored one in the second, one in the third, and one in the fourth before Peru State was able to score.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, after an out, Sedell homered over the left field fence on a 2-1 count to cut the deficit to 3-1.
 
The Yellowjackets would extend their lead in the top of the fifth by plating four runs to increase their lead to 7-1.

Scout Villanueva was behind the plate for a couple of games
and was the designated hitter in the others. Villanueva
had his first home run of the season in final game.

In the bottom of the fifth, Muniz started the inning with a homer over the left field fence on a 1-0 count, but that would be all Peru State could add.
 
After holding the 'Jackets scoreless in the top of the sixth, the 'Cats did a little damage in the bottom of the sixth. McGinnity homered to start the inning on a 2-2 count over the left field to make it 7-3. After an out, Villanueva singled to shallow right. After another out, Del Hoyo doubled to deep right-center to drive in Villanueva to make it 7-4.
 
Graceland would add some insurance runs in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to 9-4. Peru State was not able to must much offense in the bottom of the inning and the Yellowjackets won their first conference game.
 
The Yellowjackets scored their nine runs on 12 hits and did not have any errors. Peru State scored their four runs on eight hits and had two miscues.
 
Villanueva was the only Bobcat with more than one hit as he went two for three. McGinnity, Sedell, Del Hoyo, and Muniz were each credited with one RBI.
 
Javiar Vasquez (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico) started on the hill for Peru State and went 4.1 innings and was tagged for the loss. Vasquez allowed 6 hits, 4 earned runs, and struck out 2. Matthew Sontag (Davie, Fla.) threw one out, but allowed 2 hits and 3 earned runs. Travis Navarro (San Jacinto, Calif.) also tossed one out. Tyler Wheelock (Omaha) threw 1 inning allowing 1 hit and struck out 1. Michael Demers (Blair) threw the final inning. Demers gave up 3 hits and 2 earned runs.

Upcoming Games
 
Peru State's Tuesday game with Bethany in Lindsborg, Kan., was moved to Monday due to anticipated cooler temperatures in Kansas in 24 hours. This will be a nine-inning game beginning at 2:30 p.m. The Swedes are presently 17-11 overall.
 
The 'Cats will be back home for their next pair of double headers. On Saturday, the Bobcats will be hosting Heart South Division foe Central Methodist (Mo.) in a double header beginning at 1 p.m. The Eagles are on a roll right now and are 21-4 overall and 6-0 in the Heart to lead their division.
 
Bethany will come to Peru State on Tuesday, March 28, for a double header scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the Centennial Complex Field.
