Baker Softball Sweeps Double Header over Peru State

(Peru, Neb.) – On a day when it initially appeared thunderstorms could wash the games out, the Baker (Kan.) University Wildcats and Peru State Bobcats tangled in a softball double header.
 
The Wildcats ended up sweeping Peru State as they won game won 4-0 and then took game two in 11 innings by a score of 4-3.
 
With the wins, Baker improved to 25-14 overall and 4-2 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. Peru State fell to 7-21 and 2-6 in the Heart.

Game One Action
 
The Bobcats came up against one of the top pitchers in the Heart and were held to just one hit and two base runners in the first game.
 
Baker scored two in the top of the first and then two more in the top of the third for their four runs.
 
The Wildcats scored their four runs on 11 hits and committed one error. The Bobcats managed just one hit and did not commit any errors.
 
Halle Holloway (Waco) had the lone hit for Peru State.
 
Morgan Ritchie (Lincoln) tossed the entire game for the Bobcats and was tagged for the loss. Ritchie allowed 11 hits, four earned runs, and struck out two.

Game Two Action
 
It was a pitcher's duel in the second game with Peru State getting runs in the bottom of the first. Neither team would score until the seventh.

in the second game.

 
The Bobcats started things with Holloway getting on board with a walk. Holloway advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sydney Armbruster (Falls City).  Kayla Guerrero (Omaha) singled to shallow right with Holloway moving to third. Ritchie bunted and reached safely with Holloway scoring and Guerrero staying at second. The 'Cats pulled off a double steal and then Guerrero scored when Jenna Gruber (Lincoln) singled up the middle to make it 2-0.
 
Baker scored two in the top of the seventh to knot it up at 2-2.
 
Neither team scored in the eighth, ninth, or tenth innings. In the top of the 11th, Baker scored two runs and were aided with an error by Peru State.
 
In the bottom of the 11th, with the international rules applied, Gruber started at second base. After an out, Chelsea Reznicek (Omaha) hit a single to shallow right-center which was deep enough for Gruber to score to make it 4-3. Taylor Moya (Keenesburg, Colo.) entered to run for Reznicek and was forced out when Hannah Mitchel (Nebraska City) reached on a fielder's choice. Mitchel would go to second when Holloway reached on a walk. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, the next batter flew out and Baker took the second game 4-3.
 
Baker scored their four runs on 11 hits and committed two errors. The Bobcats scored their three runs on eight hits and also had two errors.
 
Guerrero and Gruber each had two hits to lead Peru State. Gruber, Ritchie, and Chelsea Reznicek were each credited with an RBI. Armbruster had the only triple in the game.
 
Nicole Reznicek (Omaha) suffered the loss after pitching the entire 11 innings. Reznicek scattered 11 hits, gave up four runs – two earned, and struck out four.

Upcoming Games
 
Peru State will play a pair of non-conference games on Friday when they host Grace University from Omaha. The Royals are in the first season of competition and are 3-30 on the year. They are coached by former Bobcat softball player Kathleen Brown. Brown is assisted by another former Bobcat Tabitha Foster. The double header is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
 
Then, on Saturday, the 'Cats will travel south to Atchison, Kan., to face Benedictine College in a Heart double header scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The Ravens are presently 11-13 overall and are 1-3 in the Heart having had some of their games postponed due to the weather.
