Bobcat Baseball Drops Four to Wayland Baptist

(Peru, Neb.) – When you go play a team which already has played 12 games and you have not had your first contest, it could prove to be a tough road. That is what the Peru State baseball team found out this weekend as they dropped their four opening games at the hands of Wayland Baptist University (WBU) in Plainview, Texas.

The Pioneers won 7-2 and 11-1 on Friday and then swept the Saturday series 7-1 and 19-3.

WBU improved to 13-3 overall as they have won their last eight games in row while Peru State starts the season 0-4.

Friday Game One

The Bobcats got on the board first in the top of the second inning after the first out of the inning when Jordan Silva (Lynnwood, Wash.) doubled to left field. After the second out, Chet Brown (Redlands, Calif.) doubled to right center and the 'Cats led 1-0 at that point.

WBU would go on to score two in the third, two in the fourth, and two in the fifth to lead 6-1 after five full innings.

In the top of the sixth, after the first out of the inning, Kyle Killen (Commerce City, Colo.) hit a home run over the center field fence. That would prove to be the final score for Peru State with WBU scoring one more to win 7-2.

The Pioneers scored their seven runs on ten hits and committed no errors. Peru State scored their two runs on five hits and had one error.

Kadyn Glass (Redlands, Calif.) went two for three to lead the 'Cats. Killen, Silva, and Brown each had one hit with Killen and Brown each getting one RBI.

Angus Miller (Fontana, Calif.) started the game for the Bobcats. Miller threw 3.1 innings and allowed four hits, four earned runs, and struck out one. Andrew Robinson (Imperial Beach, Calif.) tossed the final 2.2 innings and allowed six hits and three runs – two earned. Robinson was tagged for the loss.

WBU GAME ONE BOX SCORE

Friday Game Two

Neither team would score until the third inning when the Pioneers would score two runs. WBU would add one in the bottom of the fourth and then exploded for five in the bottom of the fifth to lead 8-0 at that point.

Peru State would finally get on the board in the top of the sixth inning. After one out, Killen singled up the middle but was forced out on the next play with a fielder's choice when Glass got out board. Seth Thomason (Crestview, Fla.) singled moving Glass to second. Mark McGinnity (Pembrook Pines, Fla.) singled up the middle which scored Glass.

The Pioneers would add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth and went on to win 11-1.

WBU scored its 11 runs on 12 hits and had no errors. The 'Cats scored their lone run on seven hits and had one miscue.

Thomason went two for three to lead Peru State. Killen, Glass, McGinnity, Sterling Rupp (Grand Island), and Travis Navarro (San Jacinto, Calif.) each had one hit. McGinnity was credited for the only RBI

Jacob Trujillo (Hollister, Calif.) started the game for the Bobcats and had the loss. Trujillo allowed ten hits, eight earned runs, and struck out two. Thomas Hernandez (Hollister, Calif.) pitched 1.1 innings in relief and gave up two hits, three earned runs, and struck out one.

WBU GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Saturday Game One

Killen started Saturday's first game with a single to left field and went to second as Glass laid down a sacrifice bunt. Thomason singled back to the pitcher to drive in Killen. That would be the end of Peru State's scoring in the top of the first. Unfortunately, that would be the end of the scoring in the game, even though the 'Cats had other opportunities to score.

WBU scored two in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth, and two in the sixth to win 7-1.

The Pioneers scored their seven runs on seven hits and had no errors. Peru State also had seven hits, but could only manage one run. The Bobcats did not commit an error.

Thomason was three for three to lead Peru State and was credited with the lone RBI. McGinnity added two hits.

Ryan Hirschfeld (Brush, Colo.) started the game for the 'Cats and tossed 3.2 innings while being tagged for the loss. Hirschfeld gave up six hits, four earned runs, and had four strikeouts. WBU GAME ONE SATURDAY BOX SCORE

Saturday Game Two

The Pioneers scored two in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the third, Peru State got on the scoreboard. Glass singled to short and then was out when Killen reached on a fielder's choice. Killen would advance to second on a wild pitch and then went to third on the second out of the inning. McGinnity would homer over the left field fence and the game was tied at 2-2.

WBU would break the tie in the bottom half of the inning with three runs. The Pioneers would then explode for six runs in the bottom of the fourth and led 11-2 at that point. After a scoreless fifth, WBU added eight more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 19-2.

The 'Cats would get back on the board in the top of the seventh. Caleb Dameron (Henderson, Colo.) reached with a walk to start the inning and after the first out, Dameron would go to second on a wild pitch. Charles Lutz (Redlands, Calif.) singled up the middle to bring in Dameron, but that would prove to be the only run Peru State would score in the inning.
