Cool Shooting Dooms Bobcat Women

(Peru, Neb.) – When your opponent shoots 16% better than your team does, it tends to be a problem. That is what happened Monday night when the Peru State women dropped a home contest to William Penn (WPU) 80-58 in the Al Wheeler Activity Center.

With the win, the Statesmen improved to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. The 'Cats fell to 2-6 overall and 0-5 in the Heart.

After WPU scored the first basket of the game, Kiley Guerue (Morrill) came back to hit a trey to put the Bobcats up on top 3-2 at the 9:03 point in the first quarter. After a Statesmen turnover, Guerue came back with another three-pointer, this time coming off an assist from Brooke Maeda (Honolulu) to extend the lead to 6-2. The Statesmen would score the next five points to lead 7-6 before Abigail Niebrugge (Omaha) would drain a trey and Peru State was up again 9-7 with 5:50 left in the stanza.

WPU would tie it only to see Jackie Beaugard (Omaha) grab an offensive rebound and put it back up to put Peru State up for what would be the last time at 11-9 with 5:19 to go in the first ten minutes. The Statesmen would score the next 11 points and never trail the rest of the game.

The score at the end of the first period was 23-15 WPU.

Second Quarter Action

Back-to-back buckets by Deandra Williams (Rosenberg, Texas) to start the second quarter pulled Peru State to within four at 23-19 with 8:30 left in the second. The 'Cats would only be able to score another ten points in the stanza while WPU put up 25 to lead 48-29 at halftime.

Third Quarter Action
