Bobcat Baseball Sweeps Central Methodist

(Peru, Neb.) – The baseball coaches were smarter than Mother Nature and moved their games from Tuesday to Monday to beat the rain. The results were even smarter for Peru State as they swept the visiting Central Methodist University (CMU) Eagles.
 
The Bobcats took game one 5-2 and held on for a 7-5 win in the second game.

With the wins, Peru State improved to 17-7 overall and 7-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. CMU fell to 14-10 and 4-4 in the Heart. The Bobcats are leading the Western Division while the Eagles remain on top at the present time in the Eastern Division.
 
Game One Action
 
In the bottom of the first inning, Peru State got on the board. Joshua Alonzo (Riverside, Calif.) reached on a walk and went to second when Kyle Killen (Commerce City, Colo.) was hit by a pitch. Randy Santiesteban (Hialeah, Fla.) bunted and reached with a base hit with the runners advancing. Alonzo scored on a CMU bobble with Killen moving to third. Santiesteban advanced to second on a stolen base. Scout Villanueva (Bakersfield, Calif.) reached on a walk as did Adam Quintana (Highland, Calif.) which brought Killen home to put the 'Cats on top 2-0.
 
After a scoreless second inning, the Bobcats added a run in the bottom of the third. After the first out, Villanueva reached on a walk with Brandon Melendez (Miramar, Fla.) entering to run for him. On a passed ball, Melendez advanced to second. Quintana singled thru the hole at shortstop with Melendez advancing to third. Seth Walston (Hemet, Calif.) singled to second to drive in Melendez to make the score 3-0 Peru State.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Jordan Silva (Lynnwood, Wash.) reached on a walk and went to second when Grant Hindman (Omaha) laid down a sacrifice bunt. After a fly ball out, Killen singled to center to score Silva. After four complete innings, the 'Cats led 4-0.
 
After the first out in the bottom of the fifth, Quintana singled to shallow right. Walston followed with a double to deep left-center with Quintana scoring to make it 5-0 Peru State.
 
With two errors in the top of the seventh by the Bobcats, the Eagles were able to plate a couple of runs, but left one on base with the 'Cats winning 5-2.
 
Peru State scored their five runs on seven hits and had two errors. CMU scored their two runs on four hits and had one error.
 
Quintana and Walston each had two hits in the game to lead Peru State. Walston had two RBI while Killen and Quintana each adding one.
 
Manny Arciniega (Hemet, Calif.) threw a complete game for his third win of the season. Arciniega allowed just four hits, two runs – none earned, and struck out seven.

Game Two Action
 
Peru State took an early lead in the second game, but then had to come back for the win.
 
In the bottom of the first inning, Alonzo reached on a bobble and then advanced with a stolen base to second. On a wild pitch, Alonzo went to third. Santiesteban hit a sacrifice fly to left-center and Peru State led 1-0.
 
Two innings later, after the first out, Hindman reached on a walk, but was forced out when Alonzo reached first on a fielder's choice. Killen got on with a walk and Santiesteban hit a three-run home run over the left field fence on a 2-0 count to make it 4-0 Bobcats.
 
The CMU bats came to life in the top of the fourth as the Eagles were able to score five runs on four hits to go on top 5-4.
 
In the bottom of the inning, Quintana homered to start the inning with a home run over the left field fence on the first pitch he saw to tie the game at 5-5. The Bobcats did squander some potential runs as they left two on base.
 
The only other scoring in the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Quintana doubled to deep right-center. After the first out, Melendez singled to shallow left with Quintana stopping at third. Silva bunted and reached first on a CMU error which allowed Quintana to score giving Peru State a 6-5 lead. Melendez advanced to third on the play and later scored with Hindman reached first on a fielder's choice. That would be the only other run in the game as Peru State held on for the 7-5 win.
 
The Bobcats scored its seven runs on just six hits and had three miscues in the game. CMU had five runs on eight hits and also had three errors.
 
Quintana led the team as he went two for four in the game. Santiesteban finished with four RBI.

Timothy Patterson came in relief in the second
game and earned the win. Jordan Silva holds

Luke Schneider (Monument, Colo.) started on the mound for the 'Cats and went five and one-third innings. Schneider gave up six hits, five earned runs, and struck out six. Timothy Patterson (Valdosta, Ga.) came in to relieve Schneider and went two and two-third innings and allowed just one hit. Patterson was credited with the win. Miguel Navarro (San Jacinto, Calif.) threw the final inning. Navarro gave up just one hit, struck out one, and earned the save.

Upcoming Games
 
Peru State is scheduled to travel to Crete on Wednesday to face the Doane College Tigers in one nine-inning contest beginning at 4:45 p.m. Currently, the Tigers are 16-5 and are winners of 11 in a row.
 
This weekend the Bobcats are scheduled to host Western Division Heart foe MidAmerica Nazarene University in two double headers on Friday and Saturday. Game time each day is 1 p.m. The Pioneers, who were receiving votes in the most recent NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, are 15-9 on the season and 3-3 in conference play. Peru State will look to reverse last year's outcome which saw MidAmerica Nazarene sweep the Bobcats in Olathe, Kan.
