Peru State Baseball Splits Double Header at Culver-Stockton

(Peru, Neb.) – After having their eight-game winning streak snapped in the first game of the double header with Culver-Stockton College, the Bobcat baseball team responded for a shutout in the nightcap.
 
The Wildcats took the first game 6-3 with Peru State winning the second game 8-0.
 
With the split, the Bobcats are now 5-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference and 13-7 overall. Culver-Stockton is now 6-18 overall and 2-4 in the Heart.
 
Game One Action
 
After the first out in the top half of the first inning, Kyle Killen (Commerce City, Colo.) singled but was later thrown out trying to steal second. Randy Santiesteban (Hialeah, Fla.) stepped to the plate and hit a home run over the left field fence to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Culver-Stockton scored to tie it at 1-1. The Wildcats would add one in the bottom of the second to lead 2-1. Culver-Stockton added four more runs in the bottom of the third to go up 6-1.
 
Peru State would be held scoreless until the top of the seventh inning. After the first out, Seth Walston (Hemet, Calif.) singled to left field and would advance to third when Mark McGinnity (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) doubled to center field. Jordan Silva (Lynnwood, Wash.) singled to right field to bring home both Walston and McGinnity. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, that would be the end of their scoring as the Wildcats took game one 6-3.
 
Culver-Stockton scored their six runs on eight hits and had two errors. The Bobcats got their three runs on seven hits and also had two errors.

McGinnity was the only Bobcat with two hits while Silva led the team with two RBI.
 
Miguel Navarro (San Jacinto, Calif.) pitched a complete game and suffered the loss. Navarro allowed eight hits, six earned runs, while striking out seven Wildcats.

Game Two Action
 
Peru State kept the Wildcats from scoring in the second game as Culver-Stockton only had four base runners in the nine-inning contest.
 
Joshua Alonzo (Riverside, Calif.) doubled to start the first inning and went to third on a ground out. Santiesteban homered to left field – his second homer of the day – and Peru State was quickly up 2-0.
 
In the top of the fourth, Walston doubled to left field to start the inning. McGinnity was hit by a pitch to go to first. Chase Phillips (Highland, Calif.) hit a sacrifice bunt with the base runners advancing. Silva hit a sacrifice fly to center field and it was enough for Walston to score to make it 3-0 Peru State.
 
Three innings later, in the top of the seventh, Peru State would add more runs. After the first out, Santiesteban doubled to left field and went to third when Scout Villanueva (Bakersfield, Calif.) singled to right. Adam Quintana (Highland, Calif.) doubled to center field with both runners scoring to make it 5-0 Bobcats.

In the top of the eighth, after the first out, Silva singled to right field and then stole second base. Alonzo walked and then after the second out, Santiesteban singled to right field to drive in Silva making the score 6-0.
 
Peru State would add two more runs in the top of the ninth. Quintana singled to right field and Walston followed with a double to drive in Quintana. McGinnity followed with a single with Walston stopping at third. Phillips hit a single to left field and Walston scored the final run for Peru State as the Bobcats won 8-0.
 
The Bobcats scored their eight runs on 17 hits and committed one error. Culver-Stockton managed just three hits and also had one error.
 
Santiesteban and Walston each had three hits while Alonzo, Villanueva, and Quintana each added two hits. Santiesteban was credited with three RBI while Quintana added two.

Quintana earned the win on the mound, his second of the season. Quintana threw eight innings and allowed just three hits while striking out ten. Daniel Muniz (Miami, Fla.) tossed the final inning in relief.

Upcoming Games
 
The Bobcats are scheduled to host Dakota Wesleyan University on Sunday in a double header scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The Tigers are presently 8-6 on the season.
 
With anticipated rain on Tuesday, Peru State has moved its conference games with Central Methodist University to Monday. The double header with the Eagles is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Currently, the Eagles are 13-8 overall and 4-2 in the Heart in the Western Division. Central Methodist is scheduled to play Park University on Sunday.
