Peru State Softball Evens Record with Sweep of Prairie Wolves

(Peru, Neb.) – The Bobcat softball team evened their season record at 7-7 after a sweep of the Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU) Prairie Wolves Thursday afternoon.
 
Peru State took the first game in a wild, nine-inning affair 10-9. The second game was close as well, but the 'Cats prevailed 5-4.
 
Although close to winning each game, the Prairie Wolves have yet to win and are 0-8 on the season.
 
Game One Action
 
It did not look good at the beginning of the game for the 'Cats as they fell behind 6-0 after the first two innings as NWU plated three runs in each inning. Peru State did have opportunities in both innings, but could not convert.

Meghan McPolin, the second baseman, had two hits in the victory.

 
Finally, in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bobcats got on the scorebook. Sydney Webb (Lincoln) reached on a Prairie Wolves error. On the second out of the inning which was a ground out, Webb advanced to third. Meghan McPolin (Orland Park, Ill.) singled to bring Webb home for Peru State's first run of the game.
 
After getting NWU to go down in order in the top of the fifth, the Bobcat bats got going in the bottom half of the inning. Kayla Guerrero (Omaha) reached on a walk which brought Leah Quick (Kansas City, Mo.) to the plate. Shelbie Hess (Phoenix) entered to run for Guerrero. On the first pitch she saw, Quick hit a two-run home run over the center field fence to cut the lead to 6-3. Halle Holloway (Waco) came to the plate and singled to shallow left. This brought Cheyenne Dalrymple (Stockton, Calif.) to the plate and Dalrymple followed Quick's example and took the first pitch over the left field fence to make it 6-5 Nebraska Wesleyan. Peru State did have more base runners, but could not capitalize.
 
The Prairie Wolves went down in order again in the top of the sixth inning. After the first out of the inning, Quick singled up the middle and went to second on a wild pitch. After the second out, Dalrymple reached on a walk. On a passed ball, both base runners moved up a base. Webb stepped to the plate and hit a three-run home run to give Peru State their first lead of the contest at 8-6.
 
NWU did not go down in the top of the seventh as they regained the lead after scoring three runs to lead 9-8.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Brittany McNeese (Gretna) singled to left-center. On a ground out, McNeese advanced to second. After the second out, Guerrero, a freshman, came through with a single down the right field line to drive in McNeese to knot the game at 9-9.
 
Neither team would score in the eighth inning with the international tie-breaking rules applied. In the Prairie Wolves' inning, Webb made a great play from center field as she caught a fly ball and then threw a perfect ball to Dalrymple at home who tagged out the runner trying to score which ignited the Bobcat fans.

Cheyenne Dalrymple was safe at third in the second game. Dalrymple
had two RBI in the first game and two hits in the second game.

 
In the top of the ninth, NWU loaded the bases with no outs. The next two batters popped up for outs and then Peru State was able to get a strike out.
 
Peru State came to bat with Webb starting at second. Molly Holbrook (Lincoln) reached on a walk and then Webb stole third. McNeese reached with a walk to load the bases. McPolin stepped to the plate and bunted to reach base with Webb scoring and giving Peru State a 10-9 win.
 
The 'Cats scored their ten runs on 13 hits and had three errors. NWU scored their nine runs on seven errors and had two errors.
 
McNeese had three hits to lead the Bobcats while Quick, Holloway, and McPolin each had two hits. Webb led the team with three RBI with Quick, Dalrymple, and McPolin each adding two RBI.
 
McNeese was on the mound for most of the game for Peru State and earned the win. McNeese pitched eight of the nine innings. She allowed seven hits, eight runs – six earned, and struck out four. Nicole Reznicek pitched the seventh inning and allowed one run.

Game Two Action
 
The 'Cats scored first in the second game in the bottom of the first. After an out, Holloway singled thru the hole at shortstop. Dalrymple got on base with a fielder's choice as Holloway was forced out at second. Webb singled to right with Dalrymple advancing to second. Holbrook singled to deep left-center to drive in both base runners and Peru State led 2-0.
 
NWU scored one in the top of the third to cut the lead in half at 2-1.

and Molly Holbrook at third both contributed with key hits.
In the bottom of the third, after the first two outs, Holbrook reached on a walk and came all the way around to score when McNeese singled to deep left-center. That was the only run of the inning, but Peru State was up 3-1.
 
The Prairie Wolves would tie the game at 3-3 in their half of the fourth inning. Then, in the top of the fifth, NWU would go ahead 4-3.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, after the first out, Holbrook reached on a walk and went to second when McNeese also walked. On McPolin's ground out, Holbrook scored to tie the game at 4-4.
 
Peru State was able to keep the Prairie Wolves from scoring in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the inning, after the first out, Quick singled to short. After the second out of the inning, Dalrymple singled to center with Quick moving to second. Webb came through with a single to deep center allowing Quick to score and the 'Cats were back in the lead 5-4.
 
NWU tried to mount a scoring threat in the top of the seventh, but Peru State managed a double play to thwart the opportunity to win the game.
 
The Bobcats scored their five runs on ten hits and did not have any errors. NWU scored four runs while out-hitting the 'Cats as they had 14 hits.
 
Quick went three for four in the game while Dalrymple and Webb each had two hits. Holbrook led the team with two RBI.
 
Guerrero was on the mound for the Bobcats and pitched a complete game for the win. Guerrero allowed 14 hits, four earned runs, and struck out one.

Upcoming Games
 
The Bobcats headed to Springfield, Mo., on Friday to play Evangel University on Saturday in their Heart of America Athletic Conference opener. The double header with the 6-5 Crusaders was scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
 
On Tuesday, Peru State will host a non-conference double header with Haskell Indian Nations University beginning at 3 p.m. The Fighting Indians are 0-4 on the season.
