(Peru, Neb.) – With a sweep of Evangel University in Springfield, Mo., on Tuesday, the Peru State baseball team won their fifth and sixth games in a row. The Bobcats won 2-1 and 7-5 over the Crusaders.
In addition, the sweep in the Heart of America Athletic Conference moved the 'Cats to 4-0 in conference play and 10-6 overall. The Crusaders fell to 1-3 in the Heart and are now 9-13 overall.
Game One Action The classic pitchers' duel took place in the first game as only three runs crossed the plate for both teams.
Manny Arciniega picked
up the game one win Peru State scored their first run after two outs in the top of the second inning.
Jordan Silva (Lynnwood, Wash.) reached with a walk and then scored when
Kyle Killen (Commerce City, Colo.) hit a triple to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats would score their second run in the top of the fourth inning. After the first out,
Seth Walston (Hemet, Calif.) hit a double and then went to third on a passed ball.
Mark McGinnity (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) produced a sacrifice fly with Walston scoring on the play.
Evangel would finally get on board in the bottom of the seventh, but could only score one and left two on base.
Peru State scored its two runs on five hits, four of which were for extra bases. Evangel scored their lone run on five hits.
Grant Hindman (Omaha), Adam Quintana (Highland, Calif.), Walston, McGinnity, and Killen each had one hit in the first game with McGinnity and Killen each being credited with one RBI.
Manny Arciniega (Hemet, Calif.) was on the mound and pitched a complete game for the win. Arciniega gave up five hits, one earned run, and struck out five.
Game Two Action The second game started as a pitchers' duel as well at least through the first four innings as neither team had scored with either team having few opportunities.
Scout Villanueva had two
hits and two RBI in the
second game winIn the top of the fifth, the Bobcats got on the scoreboard first. After the first out, McGinnity started things with a single and went to second when Silva walked. McGinnity would score when Killen singled. Silva moved to third on the play and Killen was thrown out trying to go for second.
Joshua Alonzo (Riverside, Calif.) walked and then stole second. Hindman followed with a play where he reached base on an Evangel error which allowed both base runners to score. After four and one-half innings, the 'Cats led 3-0.
Peru State would add three more runs in the seventh inning. Silva doubled to start the seventh and went to third when Killen singled. Killen was thrown out when Alonzo reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Silva to score. After a strikeout,
Randy Santiesteban (Hialeah, Fla.) singled to load the bases.
Scout Villanueva (Bakersfield, Calif.) singled to drive in Alonzo with Santiesteban moving to third on the play. Quintana followed with a single to bring home Santiesteban and Peru State led 6-0.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Crusaders scored to cut the deficit to 6-2. After the Bobcats could not score in the top of the eighth, Evangel plated three runs to cut the lead to 6-5.
Peru State would add an insurance run in the top of the ninth. After a strikeout, Hindman reached with a single and went to second on a passed ball. A second out would be followed with a Villanueva single which allowed Hindman to score to give the Bobcats a two-run lead.
The Crusaders went down in order in the bottom of the ninth and Peru State completed the sweep.
The 'Cats scored their seven runs on 11 hits while Evangel scored their five runs on five hits.
Villanueva and Killen each had two hits to lead Peru State. Villanueva led the team with two RBI.
Luke Schneider won the
second game against
Evangel Luke Schneider (Monument, Colo.) started the game and threw seven innings for the win. Schneider allowed three hits, four earned runs, and four strikeouts.
Timothy Patterson (Valdosta, Ga.) threw two-thirds of an inning and gave up two hits, one earned run, and had one strikeout.
Miguel Navarro (San Jacinto, Calif.) threw the final one and one-third innings for the save. Navarro did not give up any hits and struck out one.
Upcoming Games The Bobcats are going to be extremely busy for the next week as long as Mother Nature allows them to be.
Peru State will host Grand View University on Thursday in a double header scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Currently, the Vikings are 0-4 having had 16 games cancelled so far this season.
Then on Saturday, the 'Cats will take their longest trip of the season and go to Canton, Mo., to face Culver-Stockton College in Heart action. The Wildcats are presently 4-16 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
After the long trip home, Peru State is scheduled to host Dakota Wesleyan University on Sunday, March 22, in a double header beginning at 1 p.m.
Finally, the Bobcats will host Central Methodist University on Tuesday, March 24, in a double header scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
