(Peru, Neb.) – After trailing by four at halftime, a 43 to 24 advantage in the second half propelled the Peru State women's basketball team to a 67-52 win over York College Tuesday night in York.
With the win, Peru State improved to 3-7 while York fell to 4-5 in the non-conference game.
First Quarter Action The first quarter was close throughout and saw three ties and eight lead changes. The Panthers scored the first bucket of the game at the 9:16 mark in the quarter. On Peru State's next possession,
Celine Jolicoeur (Elmont, N.Y.) hit a three to put the 'Cats on top 3-2. Later, at the 8:06 point in the quarter, Jolicoeur grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up to put the Bobcats up 5-2. York would score back-to-back hoops to regain the lead 6-5 before
Jackie Robles (Parlier, Calif.) drained a trey coming off an assist from
Justice Daniel (Olathe, Kan.). The rest of the period went back and forth before the Panthers led after the first ten minutes 17-15.
Madara Laure Second Quarter Action The Panthers maintained the lead throughout the entire second quarter. York scored the first five points of the period to go up 22-15 before
Kiley Guerue (Morrill) hit a bucket in the paint off an assist from Daniel. The Panthers would go on to lead 27-21 with 5:10 left in the quarter before both teams suffered through a real cold spell.
Rashaun Casey (Rogers, Ark.) would hit a trey on an assist from Guerue with 3:57 to go which would be the last points in the quarter by Peru State. York would add a free throw with 1:47 left to lead 28-24 after the first 20 minutes.
Third Quarter Action York would drain a three to start the third period to go back up by seven at 31-24. The Panthers would eventually increase their lead to eight at 36-28 with 6:42 left in the third. At this point is where the Bobcats would finally catch a little fire.
Sydney Wilkinson (St. Joseph, Mo.) started things with a bucket which was followed by a Casey trey off an assist from Wilkinson to cut it to 36-33 at the 5:35 mark. A bucket by
Madara Laure (Riga, Latvia) would cut the deficit to one and then Guerue would make the second of two free throws to tie it at 36-36 with 3:43 left. A Laure three-pointer with 3:11 left in the quarter gave the Bobcats the lead for good. Peru State would end up leading 46-40 at the end of the first three quarters.
Fourth Quarter Action
Jackie RoblesPeru State would move out to a 15-point lead at 57-42 after Laure hit another trey, this time coming off an assist from Daniel with 7:36 left in the contest. The Panthers would cut the deficit to nine at 59-50 with 3:55 remaining before
Jackie Beaugard (Omaha) would make three of four free throws to put the 'Cats up again by double-digits. The Bobcats would finish the contest at the free throw line making five of eight tries down the stretch to win 67-52.
YORK GAME BOOK
Team Statistics Neither team really shot the ball well as York had a better shooting percentage as the Panthers finished making 20 of 57 field goals for 35.1% which included making 3 of 12 for 25% from long range. At the free throw line, York made 9 of 12 for 75%. Peru State made 23 of 79 field goals for 29.1% and connected on 9 of 33 three-point attempts for 27.3%. At the free throw line, the 'Cats made 12 of 23 for 52.2%.
Peru State held a slight rebounding edge as they grabbed 51 boards while York had 46. A big key in the game was the Bobcats forced York into 26 turnovers while committing just 14. The 'Cats had 17 steals and two blocked shots while the Panthers had six steals and four blocked shots.
Justice Daniel Individual Statistics Laure led all scorers with a season-high 18 points on 6 of 11 shooting including making 4 of 7 from behind the arc. Robles and Casey also finished in double figures with 11 and ten respectively.
Robles grabbed nine rebounds with Laure adding eight. Jolicoeur added seven.
Daniel had a season- and game-high six assists with Wilkinson dishing out three. Robles and Laure each had a game-high four steals with Wilkinson nabbing three.
Laure and Casey each had one blocked shot.
Upcoming Games Peru State is right back in action Wednesday night when they host Nebraska Wesleyan at 6 p.m. The Prairie Wolves come into the contest with 3-4 record having lost their lost two by big margins. Patrons attending the game can get one-half off their admission with a donation of a toy. Those bringing toys will also receive a ticket for a free bag of popcorn.
On Saturday, the Bobcats will get back into Heart of America Athletic Conference action when they travel to Canton, Mo., to face Culver-Stockton College at 2 p.m. Presently, the Wildcats are 7-3 overall and are 2-2 in conference play.
