(Peru, Neb.) – Peru State's baseball team moved up in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Western Division standings as they won three of four games this weekend over the visiting Avila University Eagles.
On Friday, Peru State won 10-2 and 9-0. Then, on Saturday, the 'Cats had an 11-0 win before falling in the second game 8-2.
With the wins, the Bobcats improved to 25-13 overall and 13-7 in the HAAC. Avila fell to 13-19 overall and 3-15 in conference play.
Friday Game One Action Peru State jumped to an early lead in the first game of the series as they got on the scoreboard in bottom half of the first inning.
After an out,
(San Jacinto, Calif.) gained the win as he threw a complete game. Navarro allowed seven hits, two earned runs, and struck out four.
Saturday Game One Action It was déjà vu during the first game on Saturday which had been moved up two hours to avoid potential thunderstorms.
In the bottom of the first inning, Alonzo started with a double down the left field line and then went to third on a ground out. Melendez singled thru the hole at second base and Alonzo scored. Santiesteban doubled to deep center with Melendez stopping at third. Barnes ground out, but earned an RBI as Melendez scored and Santiesteban advanced to third. Walston then hit a two-run home run over the right field fence and after the end of the first inning, the Bobcats led 4-0.
Peru State would add runs in the bottom of the second inning. After an out, Estrada singled to shallow left and went to second when Alonzo bunted and reached first. Croushorn would then reach first on a fielder's choice when Estrada advancing to third and then eventually scoring on a wild thrown, while Alonzo was forced out at second. Melendez singled to shallow left and Croushorn stopped at second. Croushorn would then score when Santiesteban singled to shallow right. At the end of two innings, the 'Cats led 6-0.
Neither team would score in the next two innings. In the bottom of the firth, the 'Cats got hot again. After an out, Barnes doubled over the left field fence.
(Tacoma, Wash.) earned the win as he threw a complete game allowing just four hits and struck out six.
Upcoming Games.
Mother Nature permitting, the Bobcats had a busy week. On Tuesday, Peru State will travel to Sioux City, Iowa, to play one nine-inning contest with Morningside College. Currently, the Mustangs are 16-19 on the season. This will be a non-conference match-up which will begin at 4 p.m.
On Wednesday, the 'Cats will be in Omaha for more non-conference play when they face Grace University. Presently, the Royals are 24-13 in their first year of baseball competition. The double header is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
Friday and Saturday, Peru State will be back in conference play when they travel to Baldwin City, Kan., to take on the Baker University Wildcats. At this point, the Wildcats are 14-22 overall and 9-9 in the HAAC Western Division.
