Yellowjackets Softball Sweeps Peru State

(Peru, Neb.) – The hosts of Graceland University were not kind to the visiting Bobcat softball team as the Yellowjackets swept Peru State on Wednesday 10-2 and 4-3 in Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) play.

With the two wins, Graceland improved to 8-22 overall and 5-7 in the HAAC.  The 'Cats fell to 20-17 overall and 1-7 in conference action.

Game One Action

In the top of the first, Peru State took its only lead in the first game.  After the first out, Bohlmeyer (Fairbury) doubled to left.  After another out, Bohlmeyer scored as Halle Holloway (Waco) reached on a Graceland error, the only error the Yellowjackets would commit in the first game.

Graceland scored five in the bottom of the first and never looked back.

The Bobcats would get one more run in the first game in the top of the fourth as Cheyenne Dalrymple (Stockton, Calif.) homered over the left-center fence on a 1-1 count to make it 5-2.

The Yellowjackets added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 7-2 and then plated three in the bottom of the fifth to end the game 10-2 with the eight-run mercy rule invoked.

Graceland scored its ten runs on 14 hits and had one error.  The Bobcats scored their two runs on six hits and had two miscues.

Bohlmeyer went two for three to lead the 'Cats while Holloway and Dalrymple were each credited with an RBI.

Lauren Johnson (Seward) was on the hill for Peru State and suffered the loss.  Johnson threw four and two-third innings.  She allowed 14 hits and allowed ten runs – nine earned.

Game Two Action

The second game was much closer through the entire contest.

Miranda Lyndes (Peyton, Colo.) singled up the middle to start the first inning.  Bohlmeyer reached on a walk and both runners advanced on a fly ball out.  On a passed ball, Lyndes scored with Bohlmeyer moving to third.  Unfortunately for Peru State, that was all the scoring the 'Cats could muster as they eventually left two runners on base.

The Yellowjackets tied it in the bottom of the first and after one inning it was 1-1.

In the top of the second, Makenna Tracy (Hickman) singled to shallow right.  After an out, Tracy stole second base.  Toni Blackwell (Papillion) reached on a walk and was forced out at second when Lyndes reached first on a fielder's choice with Tracy going to third.  Bohlmeyer reached base on a Graceland error which allowed Tracy to score.  Again, the Bobcats gave up additional scoring opportunities as two were left on base.

Peru State held the 2-1 lead until the bottom of the fourth when the 'Jackets tied it at 2-2.

Neither team scored in the fifth inning.

In the top of the sixth, after an out, Dalrymple singled to left and Jenna Gruber (Lincoln) came in to run for Dalrymple.  Gruber went to second on a fielder's choice as Rebecca Perez (Phoenix) reached first.  Tracy singled to left to load the bases.  Chelsea Reznicek (Omaha) reached on a fielder's choice, but Gruber was thrown out at home.  Blackwell reached first on a Yellowjacket error which allowed Perez to score.  After another out, the Bobcats left the bases loaded, but had regained the lead at 3-2.

In the bottom of the inning, Graceland managed to plate two runs to regain the lead at 4-3 and then shut Peru State down in the top of the seventh to preserve the win.

Graceland scored its four runs on six hits and had three errors.  The Bobcats scored their three runs on four hits and had one miscue.

Tracy went two for three to lead Peru State.  Bohlmeyer and Blackwell each had one RBI.

Devon Massengale (Elkhorn) suffered the loss as she threw six innings against the Yellowjackets.  Massengale allowed six hits, four runs – three earned, and struck out four.
