CMU Softball Sweeps Peru State

(Peru, Neb.) – The 18th-ranked Central Methodist University (CMU) Eagles visited the Centennial Field Complex at Peru State and swept the Bobcat softball team in a pair of games on Saturday.

The Eagles won the first game 13-3 and took the second game with a 7-2 score.

With the pair of wins, CMU improved to 21-4 overall and are 4-0 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC). The Bobcats fell of 0-4 in the conference and 15-14 overall.

Game One Action

Peru State scored first in the bottom of the first inning. Abbie Moser (Lincoln) got on board with a misplaced grounder and then went to second when Traci Bohlmeyer (Fairbury) singled to the pitcher's mound. On the play, Moser advanced to third. Anna O'Gorman (Omaha) hit a sacrifice bunt with Moser scoring as the 'Cats took a 1-0 lead after one inning.

CMU would score two runs in each of the second and third innings. Then, the Eagles plated three runs in the top of the fourth to lead 7-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, O'Gorman started things for the Bobcats with a double to deep right. Halle Halloway (Waco) singled to shallow center. After a strike out, a fly ball followed with O'Gorman advancing to third. Brittany McNeese (Gretna) doubled to deep right-center with both base runners scoring. After four complete innings, CMU lead 7-3.

That would be the end of Peru State's scoring, but the Eagles added one in the fifth, two in the sixth, and three in the seventh to win 13-3.

CMU scored its 13 runs on 14 hits and committed one error. The 'Cats scored their three runs on five hits and had three miscues.

Moser, Bohlmeyer, O'Gorman, Holloway, and McNeese each had one hit with McNeese credited for two RBI.

Devon Massengale (Elkhorn) started on the mound and threw the first three innings for Peru State. Massengale, who suffered the loss, gave up six hits, seven runs – six earned, and struck out three. McNeese pitched the last four innings and allowed eight hits, six earned runs, and struck out three.

Game Two Action

The Eagles struck early in the second game and scored five runs in the top of the first inning. CMU would add one run in the top of the third to lead 6-0 at that point.

In the bottom of the third, Peru State would score after leaving five base runners on base during the first two innings.

After two outs, Molly Holbrook (Lincoln) reached with a walk. Then, Sydney Webb (Lincoln) tripled down the left field line, to drive in Holbrook to make it 6-1. Miranda Lyndes (Peyton, Colo.) doubled to deep left-center to bring Webb home. After three complete, Peru State trailed 6-2.

CMU would add one more run in the top of the fifth for the final score of 7-2.

Central Methodist lit up the Bobcat pitchers for 17 hits to gain their seven runs. The Bobcats scored their two runs on four hits and had one error.

Webb led the team with two hits while Lyndes and Holloway each had one. Webb and Lyndes each had one RBI.

Nicole Reznicek (Omaha) started on the mound for Peru State and suffered the loss. Reznicek gave up seven hits, six runs – five earned, and struck out one while pitching two and one-third innings. Lauren Johnson (Seward) came in to relieve Reznicek and tossed the final four and two-third innings. Johnson allowed ten hits, one earned run, and struck out two Eagle batters.

Upcoming Games

The Bobcats played Langston University from Langston, Oklahoma, on Sunday at home.

On Tuesday, Peru State will travel to Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan., as they start a 12-game road stretch before returning home on April 15. The double header with the Wildcats on Tuesday is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Currently, Baker is 14-14 overall and are 4-0 in the HAAC with a pair of conference wins over Graceland University and Culver-Stockton College.
