It was one of those days for the Peru State softball team as they struggled to get started early in each game of their double header with the visiting Evangel University Crusaders. The Crusaders jumped to early leads in both games and went on to sweep the double header 7-2 and 11-4.
With the two wins, Evangel improved to 15-5 overall and 2-0 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC). The Bobcats fell to 0-2 in the conference and dropped to 15-12 on the season.
Evangel plated four runs in the top of the first inning and added three more in the top of the second to take the early 7-0 lead. The Crusaders also were looking to add additional runs in the top of the fourth which forced Peru State into a pitching change which worked to the Bobcats' advantage.
Peru State had base runners in several innings, but was not able to score until the bottom of the sixth.
Halle Holloway (Waco) homered in the inning on a 0-0 count to make it 7-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, after the first out,
Abbie Moser (Lincoln) doubled to deep right-center. After a second out,
Anna O'Gorman (Omaha) tripled to deep right-center to drive in Moser to add the only other run in the first game for the 'Cats.
Evangel scored its seven runs on 15 hits and committed no errors. The Bobcats did have ten hits resulting in their two runs. Peru State committed three errors.
Moser,
Traci Bohlmeyer (Fairbury), and Holloway each had two hits to the 'Cats. Holloway and O'Gorman were credited with one RBI apiece.
Lauren Johnson (Seward) started on the mound for Peru State and was tagged for the loss. Johnson threw three innings and gave up 12 hits, seven runs – five earned, and struck out one.
Nicole Reznicek (Omaha) came in to relieve Johnson and finished the game by throwing four innings. Reznicek surrendered just three hits, gave up no runs, and struck out two.

Game Two Action
Again, the Crusaders jumped to an early lead as they scored two runs in the first and four in the second to go up 6-0. Evangel would add another run in the top of the fourth to have a 7-0 lead, just like in the first game before the Bobcats would score.
Peru State squandered an opportunity in the bottom of the second as they left the bases loaded. The Bobcats did finally score in the bottom of the fifth.
After the first out of the inning,
Devon Massengale (Elkhorn) singled to shallow center and went to second when Moser singled down the right field line. Bohlmeyer loaded the bases when Evangel committed an error. Massengale and Moser scored when O'Gorman singled to shallow right-center and Bohlmeyer advanced to second. At that point, it was Evangel 7-2.
After a Crusader pitching change,
Rebecca Perez (Phoenix) singled to shallow left which drove in Bohlmeyer and O'Gorman went to second. After a fly ball out,
Sydney Webb (Lincoln) singled to center to drive in O'Gorman, but that would be all the 'Cats would score. At the end of five it was 7-4 Crusaders.
Evangel would tack on four more runs in the top of the seven to secure the 11-4 victory.
The Crusaders scored their 11 runs on 16 hits and committed one error. Peru State had four runs on eight hits and had one miscue.
O'Gorman was the only Bobcat with two hits and also led the team with two RBI.
Reznicek started the game and managed to only get through one and one-third innings after pitching well at the end of the first game. She gave up seven hits, six earned runs, and struck out one.
Massengale relieved Reznicek and threw the final five and two-third innings. Massengale scattered nine hits, gave up five earned runs, and struck out two.
