Walk-Off Bobcat Home Run Gives Concordia Softball First Loss of Season

(Peru, Neb.) – Coming into the double header with the Peru State Bobcat softball team in Peru on Wednesday, the Concordia University Bulldog team was undefeated. The Bulldogs were coming off a 9-0 mark while participating in the Tucson Invitational Games.

In the first game on Wednesday, the Bobcat got a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning from Anna O'Gorman (Omaha) to win 6-4. Concordia rebounded in the second game in a pitcher's duel to win 2-1. Coming into the day's games, the Bulldogs had been receiving votes in the first NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll of the spring.

Following the split, Peru State is now 15-10 overall and Concordia is 10-1.

Game One Action

There was little scoring in the first game until the seventh inning. Concordia plated one in the top of the first inning and maintained that lead until the bottom of the fifth inning.

In Peru's half of the fifth, Molly Holbrook (Lincoln) reached base on a Bulldog error. Makenna Tracy (Hickman) came in to run for Holbrook and advanced to second with a stolen base. Sydney Webb (Lincoln) singled to shallow left-center to drive in Tracy. Webb was out trying to stretch the play to second. The 'Cats had additional opportunities in the inning to score, but could not. At the end of five complete innings, the score was tied 1-1.

Neither team would score in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs were able to push across three runs and it looked a little bleak for Peru State, based on the pitching performance by Concordia to that point. However, the Bobcats responded, after trailing 4-1.

Webb singled to short and went to second when Brittany McNeese (Gretna) singled up the middle. Miranda Lyndes (Peyton, Colo.) entered the game to run for McNeese. The runners advanced when Toni Blackwell (Papillion) drew a walk. Abbie Moser (Lincoln) stepped to the plate and produced a game-tying double as she cleared the bases. Moser was thrown out at third trying to stretch her double into a triple. Traci Bohlmeyer (Fairbury) reached with a single thru the hole at shortstop to give Peru State chances for a win. At that point, O'Gorman stepped to the plate and took the first pitch she saw over the center field fence giving the 'Cats the 6-4 victory.

The Bobcats scored their six runs on 12 hits and committed one error. Concordia scored their four runs on six hits and also had one error.

Moser was three for four in the game with three RBI to lead the Bobcats. Bohlmeyer, O'Gorman, and Webb each had two hits with O'Gorman having the game-winning two RBI.

McNeese was on the mound and threw a complete game for her third win of the season. She scattered six hits, giving up four runs – three earned, and struck out one.

The Bulldogs tied it in the top of the second and that score reminded the same until the sixth inning when Concordia plated what would turn out to be the winning run of the game.

Peru State managed only three hits leading to their one run and had two errors. The Bulldogs had two runs on six hits and committed one error.

Lyndes, Leah Quick (Kansas City, Kan.), and Halle Holloway (Waco) each had one hit in the game with Lyndes having the only RBI on her solo homer.
