Bobcat Softball Splits with Hastings Broncos

(Peru, Neb.) – The Peru State Bobcat softball team gained their second split on the weekend as they met on the field with the Hastings College Broncos. 
 
Hastings took the first game 8-3 while the 'Cats took the second game 5-2.

With the split in non-conference action, Peru State is now 11-19 overall.  The Broncos' record is now 14-6.
 
Game One Action
 
Hastings started off with three runs in the top of the first inning and maintained the 3-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth.
 
Jordan Walker (Peyton, Colo.) doubled to deep left to get things going for Peru State.  Cheyenne Dalrymple (Stockton, Colo.) singled to shallow left with Walker advancing to third.  Trista Hutchings (Cambridge, Ontario, Canada) singled shallow down the right field line to score Walker.  Toni Blackwell (Papillion) followed with a single to left-center to load the bases.  After an out, Abbie Moser (Lincoln) came in as a pinch hitter and singled to shallow center, driving in Dalrymple, cutting the lead to 3-2 in favor of Hastings.
 
The Broncos would tack on three more runs in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 6-2 and added two more in the top of the seventh, making it 8-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, following the first out, Blackwell singled up the middle and later advanced to second when Traci Bohlmeyer (Fairbury) singled to shallow left.  After the second out of the inning, both runners advanced on a wild pitch.  Samantha Walker (Peyton, Colo.) followed with a single to center scoring Blackwell.  However, that was all Peru State could muster and Hastings won 8-3.
 
 The 'Cats scored their three runs on nine hits and committed an uncharacteristically high five errors.  Hastings scored their eight runs on 11 hits and had no errors.
 
Blackwell went two for two to lead the Peru State batters.  Moser, Sam Walker, and Hutchings each had one RBI.
 
Hutchings pitched the entire game and took the loss.  Hutchings gave up 11 hits, eight runs – six earned, and struck out five.

Game Two Action
 
Peru State was able to get on the board first in the bottom of the second inning.   Jordan Walker doubled to deep right-center to start things off.  After a strikeout, Casee Ford (Fort Collins, Colo.) reached on a walk.  Blackwell reached first on a fielder's choice with Ford being forced out at second and Walker advancing to third.  Walker scored on a double steal with Blackwell going to second base to make it 1-0.  Bohlmeyer reached base on a Hastings bobble with Blackwell advancing to third and later scoring on the throw.  At the end of two, the 'Cats led 2-0.
 
Miranda Lyndes (Peyton, Colo.) led off the bottom of the third with a single and went to second on a groundout.  Moser singled shallow down the left field line with Lyndes advancing to third.   Jordan Walker drove in Lyndes with a single down the left field line and the Bobcats led 3-0 after three innings.
 
Hastings would score their two runs in the top of the fourth inning, cutting the Peru State lead to 3-2.

The 'Cats would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth.  Ford reached on a walk and advanced to second on a fielder's obstruction on a Bobcat pop-out.  Then, Ford went to third with a stolen base.  Bohlmeyer reached first on a walk and then with a double steal, Ford came home to make it 4-2 Peru State.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Peru State would add an insurance run.  After two outs, Sam Walker singled to left and came home when Ford doubled to left-center.  With the run, it made it 5-2 Bobcats, the final score of the game.
 
Tesla Oldfield (Nebraska City) and Jordan Walker each had two hits with Walker getting one RBI.  Ford added the other RBI.
 
Lauren Johnson (Seward) evened her pitching record at 7-7 with the win over Hastings.  Johnson scattered nine hits, gave up two earned runs, and struck out two.

Upcoming Games
 
The Bobcats have another busy week, that is, if Mother Nature cooperates. 
 
On Tuesday, Peru State travels to Olathe, Kan., to face Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) foe, MidAmerica Nazarene University.  The double header is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
 
Another HAAC opponent will be the visitors for Wednesday as Missouri Valley College comes to Peru for a double header beginning at 3 p.m.
 
On Saturday, the Bobcats will host Graceland University, again, in HAAC play.  The double header on the 13th begins at 2 p.m.
 
A non-conference double header will top off the week when Peru State travels to Omaha to face former conference rival, the College of St. Mary Flames.  Game time for Sunday is 12 noon for the double header action.
