Peru State Baseball Splits another HAAC Double Header

(Peru, Neb.) – The Peru State Bobcat baseball team maintained their .500 record in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) after splitting a pair of games with the visiting Central Methodist University (CMU) Eagles on Wednesday.
 
Peru State took the first game 8-2 and fell in the second 6-2.  With the split, the Bobcats are now 6-6 in the HAAC and 12-13 overall.   The Eagles' record is now 11-7 overall and 7-3 in the HAAC.  This was a cross-division double header with the first game lasting seven innings and the second was nine innings.

Neither team scored until the fourth inning with the Eagles getting one run in the top of the inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Peru State got on the board in the bottom of the fourth after two outs.  Randy Santiesteban (Hialeah, Fla.) homered over the left field fence on a 1-1 count.  Phil Lial (Las Vegas, Nev.) singled to shallow left and went to second on a wild pitch.   Jake Wright (Freeport, Fla.) singled up the middle to score Lial.  At the end of the fourth, Peru State led 2-1.
 
The Bobcats would expand their lead in the bottom of the fifth.  Ronald Tanner (Havertown, Pa.) reached first on a walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Croushorn (Omaha).   Following another out, Derek Voigt (Auburn, Wash.) singled to left scoring Tanner.  Santiesteban doubled to deep left-center bringing home Voigt, making it 4-1 Peru State.  Lial singled up the middle, driving in Santiesteban for the third run of the inning.  Lial would score when Wright doubled to deep center and at the end of five innings; it was Bobcats 6-1. 
 
Peru State would add two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.  After an out, Tanner reached base with another walk and then went to second with a stolen base.  On a ground out, Tanner advanced to third.  Tyler Cherin (Seattle, Wash.) stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence on a 0-0 count.  Going into the top of the seventh, Peru State led 8-1.
 
The Bobcats gave up one run in the top of the seventh, but prevailed for the first game win.
 
Peru State scored its eight runs on ten hits and committed no errors.  Central Methodist got their two runs on four hits and committed no errors.
 
Wright was three for three with two RBI.  Santiesteban and Lial each had two hits with Santiesteban and Cherin each adding two RBI.

Aubrey Dezarn (Las Vegas, Nev.) earned his second win of the season after throwing six innings.  Dezarn gave up four hits, two earned runs and struck out three.  Danny Borst (Moreno Valley, Calif.) pitched the final inning, giving up no hits or no runs.

Game Two Action
 
In the nine-inning contest, the Eagles struck first and built a 6-0 lead before Peru State would score.  CMU scored two runs in each of the first, third, and sixth innings before the 'Cats would finally push across a run in the seventh. 
 
In the bottom of the seventh, after the first out, Cherin singled to shallow left.  Following another out, Cherin advanced to second on a passed ball.  Tanner reached base on an Eagle error that allowed Cherin to score the lone Bobcat run in the inning.
 
Peru State would add one more in the bottom of the ninth.  Cherin doubled down the left field line to start the inning and went to third on a wild pitch.  Ryan Grabowski (Omaha) hit a sacrifice fly to deep left allowing Cherin to score.  However, that is all Peru State could muster as they dropped the contest.

The 'Cats scored their two runs on eight hits while CMU scored six runs on nine hits and committed one error.
 
Lial and Cherin each had two hits with Grabowski being credited for the lone RBI for Peru State.
 
Marshall Klontz (Auburn, Wash.) started on the mound for Peru State and was tagged for the loss.  Klontz threw four innings giving up five hits, four earned runs, and struck out one.  Tanner DeGafferelly (Freeport, Fla.) relieved Klontz and pitched three innings.  DeGafferelly gave up three hits, two earned runs, and struck out one.  Patrick Bramhall (Vermillion, Kan.) threw the final two innings and only gave up one hit.

Upcoming Games
 
Peru State will go out of conference on Thursday to face the Nebraska Wesleyan University Prairie Wolves in Lincoln in a one-game, nine-inning matchup beginning at 4 p.m.
 
This weekend, the Bobcats will travel to Atchison, Kan., and will be back in HAAC Western Division play, when they face the Benedictine College Ravens.  Two double headers will be played on Saturday and Sunday with the games scheduled to start at 1 p.m. each day.
