(Peru, Neb.) – The Peru State Bobcat softball team broke their losing streak by picking up a couple of wins in the Sterling (Kan.) College Invitational, held at the Fun Valley Sports Complex in Hutchinson, Kan.
The Bobcats topped Sterling 10-3 on Friday before falling 10-2 to Tabor (Kan.) College. Peru State started with a 6-5 win on Saturday over McPherson (Kan.) College, before dropping their final two games to Friends (Kan.) University 9-0 and Kansas Wesleyan University 8-4.
Following the tournament, Peru State's record is now 2-14.
Sterling Game 3-15
The 'Cats struck first against the Warriors by scoring two in the first inning. Peru State would add one run in the second, four in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead before Sterling would get three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Bobcats added an insurance run in the top of the fifth for the 10-3 win.
Emily Maresh (Central City) and
Miranda Lyndes (Peyton, Colo.) each had two hits and one RBI in the win. Maresh had one home run and one double and scored twice.
Traci Bohlmeyer (Fairbury) had a triple while
Toni Moffatt (Morden, Alberta, Canada) and
Tesla Oldfield (Nebraska City) each had a double in the contest.
Lauren Johnson (Seward) picked up the win, throwing a complete game. Johnson scattered 11 hits, giving up three earned runs and struck out one.
STERLING BOX SCORE
Tabor Game 3-15
Just as Peru State had jumped on Sterling, Tabor turned the tables and did the same to the Bobcats in the second game on Friday. The Bluejays scored five in the first, two in the second, and two more in the third to take a 9-0 lead before the 'Cats would score two in the fourth. Tabor added one more in the seventh for the 10-2 win.
Oldfield,
Toni Blackwell (Papillion), Moffatt,
Trista Hutchings (Cambridge, Ontario, Canada), Samantha Walker (Peyton, Colo.), Cheyenne Dalrymple (Stockton, Calif.), and Bohlmeyer each had one hit with Walker producing a double. Walker drove in both runs with her double.
Devon Massengale (Elkhorn) was on the mound and took the loss. Massengale gave up 13 hits, ten earned runs, and struck out three.
TABOR BOX SCORE
McPherson Game 3-16
The Bobcats started Saturday with a come-from-behind win. Peru State scored one in the third before McPherson took a 4-1 lead in the fifth. The 'Cats added one in the fifth to make it 4-2 before plating four runs in the sixth to go up 6-4. The Bulldogs added one in the seventh, but that was it, giving Peru State their second win of the season, 6-5.
Oldfield, Moffatt, and Bohlmeyer each had two hits with Oldfield and Bohlmeyer each scoring two runs. Dalrymple's lone hit was a home run that gave her two RBI.
Johnson picked up the win throwing seven innings and allowing six hits and five runs – two earned.
MCPHERSON BOX SCORE
Friends Game 3-16
The Lady Falcons improved to 14-5 with a 9-0 win over Peru State. Friends scored four in the third and five in the fifth to win the game in five innings.
Bohlmeyer was two of two to lead the Bobcat batters.
Hutchings was tagged with the loss, giving up eight hits, nine runs – eight earned, and struck out one.

Kansas Wesleyan Game 3-16
Facing another tough team, Peru State fell behind the Coyotes 5-0 before scoring a run in the third. Kansas Wesleyan, now 13-4, added another run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to lead 8-1 before the Bobcats added three in the sixth for the final score of 8-4.
Samantha Walker went two of three with two RBI to lead the Bobcat batters. Dalrymple added a double.
Massengale took the loss giving up nine hits, eight runs – five earned and struck out one.
KANSAS WESLEYAN BOX SCORE
Upcoming Games
The 'Cats were to have played on Monday against Morningside College, but the games were postponed until April 18, due to the cold weather.
Peru State will travel to the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth, Kan., on Wednesday, March 20, for a double header scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
On Friday, the Bobcats will open Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) play in Springfield, Mo., against the Evangel University Lady Crusaders. The start time for the double header is 2 p.m. Presently, Evangel is 15-5, but has lost four in a row.
Then, on Saturday, Peru State will continue HAAC play in Kansas City, Mo., taking on the Avila University Eagles at 2 p.m. for another double header. Avila is currently 3-7 and has lost two in a row.
Peru State will not be at home until Friday, March 29, when they host Culver-Stockton College.
