Ottawa Takes Two from Bobcat Softball

(Peru, Neb.) – The Lady Braves of Ottawa University swept a home double header over Peru State on Wednesday by the scores of 9-1 (6) and 15-9.
 
With the wins, Ottawa improved to 8-4 while the Bobcats drop to 0-11 on the season.

Game One Action
 
After the first out in the first inning, Toni Moffat (Morden, Alberta, Canada) reached on a walk.  Moffat was forced out as second on a fielder's choice as Kristen Bodyk (Paris, Ontario, Canada) went to first.  Emily Maresh (Central City) was issued a walk, moving Bodyk to second.  Bodyk then stole third and later came home on an Abbie Moser (Lincoln) single to put up what would be the Bobcats' lone run in the first game.
 
The Lady Braves scored one in the bottom of the first to tie it up and then took the lead for good in the third with two runs.  Later, Ottawa scored two in the fifth and four in the sixth to win 9-1 in six innings.
 
Peru State scored its lone run on three hits and committed no errors. 
 
Moser had two hits and Bodyk one to lead the 'Cats.  Moser was credited with the lone RBI.
 
Devon Massengale (Elkhorn) pitched for Peru State and gave up seven hits in five innings, including five earned runs.  Massengale struck out three.  Trista Hutchings (Cambridge, Ontario, Canada) pitched the final two-thirds of an inning, giving up five hits and four earned runs.

Game Two Action

Ottawa took control of the second game early with the Bobcats scoring runs late in the game.
 
Peru State did score again in the first inning to take an early lead.  Traci Bohlmeyer (Fairbury) bunted and reached on a base hit.  Toni Blackwell (Papillion) laid down a sacrifice bunt and moved Bohlmeyer to second.   Moffatt reached on a walk and Maresh was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Moser singled to left driving in Bohlmeyer and Moffat to put Peru State up 2-0.  Two outs followed leaving two 'Cats stranded on base.
 
Ottawa pushed across four runs in the bottom of the first to take the 4-2 lead.  In the second, the Lady Braves added two more to lead 6-2.
 
In the top of the third, Moffatt started the inning with a walk and went to second when Maresh singled to right.  After an out, Moffatt went to third on a stolen base.  Cheyenne Dalrymple (Stockton, Calif.) singled to left, driving in Moffatt.  That cut the Ottawa lead to 6-3.
 
The Lady Braves would add five in the bottom of the fourth to increase their lead to 11-3.
 
Moffatt led off for the 'Cats in the top of the fifth and reached on a walk.  Maresh singled to left, moving Moffatt to second.  Following two outs, Massengale earned a walk to load the bases.  Hutchings singled to shallow right-center, driving in Moffatt and Maresh with Massengale advancing to third and Hutchings to second on the throw.  Casee Ford (Fort Collins, Colo.) doubled to left scoring both Massengale and Hutchings, to make it 11-7.
 
In the bottom of the inning, Ottawa countered with two more runs to go back up 13-7.
 
In the top of the sixth, Blackwell reached on a walk and went to second on a ground out.  Maresh doubled to center, bringing home Blackwell.  Moser followed with a single to center with Maresh going to third.  Later, on the centerfielder's bobble, Maresh came home to score.  Those would be the only runs Peru State could manufacture and now trailed 13-9.

Ottawa would add two more in the bottom of the sixth to lead 15-9 and then held the 'Cats scoreless in the top of the seventh to take the second game.
 
Maresh was three for three with two runs and one RBI to lead the Bobcat hitters.  Moser was two for four and had two RBI.
 
Lauren Johnson (Seward) threw the entire game on the mound for Peru State and was tagged for the loss.  Johnson gave up 18 hits, 15 runs – nine earned, and struck out two.

Upcoming Games
 
Having already played 11 games on the road, the Bobcats could have up to 15 more games on the road before playing their first home games.
 
This Friday and Saturday, Peru State will be participating in the Sterling (Kan.) Tournament which will be played in Hutchinson, Kan.  On Friday, the 'Cats will face Kansas Wesleyan University (8-1) at 10 a.m., Sterling College (7-8) at 2 p.m., and Tabor (Kan.) College (2-9) at 4 p.m.  Then, on Saturday, Peru State will take on McPherson (Kan.) College (0-6) at 10 a.m. and Friends (Kan.) University (9-5) at noon.
 
On Monday, March 18, the Bobcats are traveling to Sioux City, Iowa, to face Morningside College (3-4) in double header action beginning at 3 p.m.  On Wednesday, March 20, Peru State will face the University of St. Mary (1-3) in Leavenworth, Kan., also beginning at 3 p.m. for the double header.
 
Peru State's first home action is scheduled for Friday, March 29, when the 'Cats host Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College in Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) action.  The double header at the Centennial Complex Field will begin at 3 p.m.
