(Peru, Neb.) – What is believed to have been the first 40-point individual performance since 2005 by a Bobcat was for naught as Peru State lost to Haskell Indian Nations University 100-90 on Tuesday night.
Senior guard
Nate Bohy (Mesa, Ariz.) scored 40 points against the Fighting Indians, but Haskell held off any late runs of the Bobcats. Per a quick review of statistics, the last time a Bobcat scored more than 40 points was ironically in a 105-98 loss to Haskell on Feb. 15, 2005, when Myron Jenkins finished with 43.
With the loss, the Bobcats fell to 3-5 on the season while Haskell improved to 2-8.
Game Action
The first half was close throughout, but the Fighting Indians would go on scoring runs with the Bobcats clawing back into the contest.
Haskell took a 5-0 run to start the game before Bohy drained a three to cut it to 5-3. At the 16:34 mark,
Grant Leslie (Auburn) hit a bucket in the paint to knot it at 5-5 on an assist from
Brett Pierce (St. Joseph, Mo.).
The Fighting Indians then had a 16-4 run to lead 21-9 with 12:55 left in the first half. Peru State would fight back again to get within two at 23-21 when Bohy fed David Leitao III
(Virginia Beach, Va.) for a two-pointer at the 10:17 mark.
With 7:14 remaining in the first stanza, Haskell had stretched the lead to 32-24. A 14-6 run by Peru State knotted the game at 38-38 when Bohy hit a two-pointer in the paint on an assist from
Kody Kirkpatrick (Loami, Ill.) with 3:15 left in the half.
Peru State would eventually take its first lead of the half at 42-41 when Tokie Aromona
(Kansas City, Mo.) hit a bucket in the paint with 2:16 to go in the half.
A three-pointer by Haskell with three ticks left on the clock gave the Fighting Indians a 48-47 lead at halftime.
A 6-0 run to start the second half put the Fighting Indians up 54-47 before
Taylor Christensen (Phoenix) scored the first points of the second half for the Bobcats.
With 14:22 left in the game, Haskell built their lead to ten points at 63-53 and eventually led by 15 at 91-76 with 4:23 to go and went on for the 100-90 victory.
Team Statistics
Coming into the game, Peru State knew they would have to stop the "bigs" from Haskell, as well as, their three-point shooters. However, the Fighting Indians did shoot well from the floor and behind the arc as they made 50% of their field goals (33 of 66) and hit 9 of 19 treys for 47.37%. The Bobcats hit 39.47% of their field goals (30 of 76), but made only 3 of 15 three-pointers (all by Bohy) for 20%.
The 'Cats did perform better at the free throw line than Haskell as Peru State made 27 of 36 of 75% while Haskell hit 25 of 37 for 67.57%.
The Bobcats did out-rebound the bigger Haskell team 51-38. Peru State committed one less turnover than Haskell, 17 to 18. Haskell did block five Bobcat field goal attempts on the night.
