Evangel Tops Bobcat Volleyball 3-1

(Peru, Neb.) – It was a tough Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) match which saw the visiting Evangel University Lady Crusaders top the Peru State Bobcats 3-1.

The Lady Crusaders won 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21. With the win Evangel improves to 12-11 overall and 4-2 in the HAAC. The loss dropped the 'Cats to 15-10 overall and 1-2 in the HAAC.

In all four sets, the teams traded leads several times. Good defense kept both teams from having a good hitting percentage as Evangel finished the match at a .186 clip while Peru State finished with a .143 hitting average.

Game Statistics

Bre Brandt (Papillion) led all hitters as she finished with 17 kills. Carrie Lierz (Holton, Kan.) added seven kills with Rachael West (El Dorado, Kan.) and Lindsey Nelson (Granite Bay, Calif.) each having six kills. Brittany Peterson (Orem, Utah) contributed five kills.

Hope Harsh (Cassoday, Kan.) and Courtney Jurek (Bellevue) each had 14 set assists with Mallory Hull (Morse Bluff) adding seven assists from her libero position.

Jurek led the team with three service aces while Paige Young (Gretna), Angie Bowers (Alda), Brandt, and Jordyn Lukasiewicz (Farwell) each had one ace.

Four Bobcats were in double figures with digs and were led by Hull's 19 digs. Jurek and Brandt had 16 and 14 respectively giving both players a double double for the day. Lukasiewicz provided 11 digs.

Peterson and Brandt each had one solo block. Peru State had an impressive 22 block assists and were led by Peterson with eight. Sarah Mertens (Lincoln), West, Nelson, and Lierz each had three block assists with Brandt getting the other two.

Upcoming Games

Peru State has five matches this coming week with one being an exhibition.

On Tuesday, Peru State will travel to Omaha and will face Waldorf College and the College of St. Mary (CSM) on St. Mary's campus. The Bobcats take on Waldorf at 4 p.m. and CSM at 7 p.m. Waldorf is currently 16-15 while St. Mary is 14-10.

On Wednesday night, the Bobcats are traveling to take on the NCAA DII Wayne State College Wildcats in an exhibition beginning at 7 p.m. The Wildcats are 16-5 and are ranked 15th in DII.

It will be Parents Day/Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 19, for Peru State. The Bobcats will host a triangular featuring Missouri Valley College and AIB College (Iowa). Peru State will take on Missouri Valley in the HAAC match-up beginning at 2 p.m. Then Missouri Valley will take on AIB at 4 p.m. with Peru State and AIB tangling at 6 p.m.
