Bobcat Women Topple Haskell

(Peru, Neb.) – After being tied at halftime, the Peru State College (PSC) Bobcat women's basketball team exploded for a 25-point win over the visiting Haskell Indian Nations University on New Year's Eve.  PSC won 74-49 after the two teams were tied at 34-34 after the first twenty minutes.
 
With the win, the 'Cats improved to 5-9 on the year.  The Fighting Indians fell to 4-10.
 
Game Action
 
Courtney Ward (Bartlesville, Okla.) put PSC on the board first after grabbing an offensive rebound and putting it back in at the 19:11 mark in the first half.  Haskell immediately responded with two field goals to lead 4-2 before Ward hit another bucket on an assist by Rachel Blair (Hubbard).

The teams would go back and forth before PSC built a 17-11 lead, their largest of the first half as Karlee Stuart (Las Animas, Colo.) hit a bucket on the assist from Jasmine Lockwood (Sunrise, Fla.).  This forced Haskell to take a timeout with 12:11 remaining in the half.
 
The Fighting Indians would go on a 23-10 run, going on top 34-27 with just over four minutes remaining in the half.  Haskell would be held scoreless after that point as PSC finished the half with a 7-0 run to knot the game up at 34-34 after the first 20 minutes.
 
PSC scored the first six points of the second half and never really were challenged as they steadily pulled away for the 74-49 win.
 
Team Statistics
 
The Bobcats had their best shooting night of the season as they finished hitting 54.4% of their field goal attempts, making 31 of 57.  Haskell made 21 of 59 attempts for 35.6% that included going five of 17 from behind the arc for 29.4%.  PSC was 12 of 20 from the free throw line for 60% while Haskell was two of four for 50%.
 
Peru State outrebounded their opponents 39 to 25.  The 'Cats also had eight blocked shots compared to just one for Haskell.  The Fighting Indians did win the turnover battle committing 22 to PSC's 23.
 
Individual Statistics
 
All six players for PSC scored in the game and were led by Ward who had game-highs in points with 28, rebounds with 16, and blocked shots with six.  Ward also had two steals.
 
Also in double figures were Natasha Moss (Indianapolis) and Lockwood with 18 and 17 respectively.  Both grabbed six rebounds while Lockwood blocked one shot while Moss had three assists.
 
Stuart finished with six points, seven assists, three steals, and one blocked shot.  Blair added three points and four rebounds while Jasmine Tate (Fayetteville, N.C.) finished the game with three points and four rebounds.

With her 28 points, Ward moved into sixth all-time with 1,238 points moving ahead of Angie Wilson who played in 1992-95.  Ward improved her career-leading marks in rebounds, now with 1,026, and with her blocked shots, presently now at 156. 
 
Upcoming Games
 
The Bobcats have a pair of Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) games yet this week.  On Thursday, PSC travels to Baldwin City, Kan., to face the Baker University Wildcats.  Presently, Baker is 9-5 overall and 2-0 in the HAAC.  Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
 
On Saturday, the Bobcats will host the Missouri College Vikings in the Al Wheeler Activity Center (AWAC) beginning at 2 p.m.  Currently, the Vikings are 4-10 overall and 1-1 in the HAAC.
 
The team's final non-conference action will take place on Monday, Jan. 7, when PSC hosts Grace University beginning at 5 p.m.   The Royals are presently 7-6 on the year.
