PSC Softball Splits with Missouri Valley

(Peru, Neb.) – For the Peru State College (PSC) Bobcat softball team, the road to the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) conference post-season tournament did not get any clearer after splitting a double header with Missouri Valley College on Wednesday.

The Bobcats came back to take the first game from the home-standing Vikings 6-4 in eight innings, but dropped the second game in the bottom of the seventh, 6-5.

With the split, PSC is 4-6 in the HAAC and 22-18 overall.  Missouri Valley is 11-14 overall and 3-5 in the conference.

Game One Action

Choate, Devin
After a scoreless first inning, both teams were able to score in the second inning.  In the top of the second, Devin Choate (Beatrice) started things off with a home run over the centerfield fence followed by an identical homer from Kristen Bodyk (Paris, Ontario, Canada).  The 'Cats had another base runner, but a double-play ended the top half of the inning with PSC up 2-0.  MVC did plate one in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 2-1.

In the third inning both teams remained scoreless, but in the top of the fourth PSC was able to put two more runs on the board.  After the first out of the inning, Choate was able to then step up and single to get on base.  After the second out of the inning, Maresh then hit a home run to deep right-center to bring in two runs.  The Vikings were unable to score in the bottom of the inning, which brought the fourth inning score to 4-1.

The fifth inning brought in no more runs for either team.  Top of the sixth kept the 'Cats scoreless but the Vikings were able to put three runs on the board, knotting the score after six at 4-4.

Emily Maresh
After a scoreless seventh by both teams, the 'Cats were able to come back in the eighth inning to put the game away.  Brittany Hoock (Elkhorn) singled to center, followed by Casee Ford (Ft. Collins, Colo.) reaching first on a fielder's choice, and Hoock was forced out.  Lyndes then reached first on a fielder's choice and Ford was forced out.  Choate stepped up and doubled to deep left-center, advancing Lyndes to third.  Lyndes was then able to advance on the throw and score.  Choate scored on a bobble by Missouri Valley.  While PSC had another base runner, they were not able to capitalize, but had the lead at 6-4.  In the bottom of the inning, the Vikings had the bases loaded at one point, but could not capitalize and PSC prevailed for the win.
Drumm, Lyndsay

Devon Massengale (Elkhorn) started off the game giving up three runs – all earned, and struck out three MVC hitters through the first five and one-third innings.  Lyndsay Drumm (Bennington) finished the game for PSC, and threw two and two-thirds innings, giving up one earned run.  Drumm was credited for the win, improving her record to 5-6 on the year.

Choate went three for three, Bodyk went one for three, and Maresh was one for two.  Maresh added two RBI, while Choate and Bodyk each had one.

Game Two Action

Missouri Valley put up four runs in the bottom of the second inning, giving them a lead that they would not lose for the rest of the game, until PSC tied it up late in the seventh.

The Vikings added a run in the third to take a commanding lead at 5-0.

Finally in the top of the fifth the Bobcats were able to put up a run, but it did not come until two outs in the inning.  Alexa Johnson (Fremont) stepped up and produced a home run over the right field fence on a 0-0 count.  For Johnson, it was her first home run as a Bobcat.  As the Vikings did not score in the bottom of the inning, at the end of five, it was 5-1 MVC.

Neither team scored in the sixth, but PSC came back in the seventh inning to almost take the game from Missouri Valley.

Bodyk reached on a walk and Abbie Moser (Lincoln) came in as a pinch runner.  Maresh was then hit by a pitch, advancing Moser.  Toni Blackwell (Papillion) came in for Maresh as a pinch runner.  Moser and Blackwell advanced to third on a ground out.  Johnson then doubled to deep left-center, bringing in both Moser and Blackwell, making it a 5-3 ballgame.  Massengale, pinch hitting for Tesla Oldfied (Nebraska City), singled, and Oldfield reentered to pinch run for Massengale.  Hoock followed with a single, and advanced both Johnson and Oldfield.  Stephanie Holdsworth (Bennet) followed with a single to shallow center, bringing in Johnson to score, and advancing both Hoock and Oldfield to make it a 5-4 deficit.

Lyndes now up to bat reached first on a fielder's choice, in the process Oldfield was forced out, but Hoock was able to advance to third.  Following a wild pitch Hoock scored knotting the game a 5-5.  With two runners on and two outs, PSC was not able to capitalize as the inning ended with a ground out.

Unfortunately, in the bottom of the final inning, the Vikings were able to put a run on the board and won the game with a final score of 6-5.
