PSC Baseball Defeats Dordt in Extra Innings

(Peru, Neb.) – It took an extra inning, but the Bobcat baseball team topped the Dordt College (DC) Defenders in ten innings, 6-5, on Wednesday at Peru State College (PSC).
 
For the mid-week, non-conference game, both teams used six pitchers.  With the win, the 'Cats improved to 22-13 while Dordt fell to 10-20 overall.

The Crusaders got on the board first, scoring one in the top of the first, and could have had more, but the Bobcats worked their way out of a bases-loaded situation.

In the bottom of the second, PSC put their first runs on the scoreboard.  Derek Voigt (Auburn, Wash.) singled to left and went to third on Brenden Gentry's (Sallisaw, Okla.) single thru the hole at second base.  Voigt ended up scoring on the play on a Dordt throwing error.  Following an out, Randy Santiesteban (Hialeah, Fla.) singled to left and Gentry went to second.  Gus Arcia (Caracas, Venezuela) singled thru the hole at shortstop to load the bases.  James Welty (Omaha) hit a sacrifice fly to left, driving in Gentry.  At the end of two, the 'Cats led 2-1.
 
Neither team scored in the third, but Dordt added one run in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to go up 4-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Peru State regained the lead.  Gio Todaro (Miami, Fla.) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Mitch Roberts (Blue Springs) came in as a pinch runner.  Roberts then proceeded to steal second base, which was followed by a walk being issued to Santiesteban.  Aubrey Dezarn (Las Vegas, Nev.) bunted and reached base to load them up for Welty, who provided a sacrifice fly to left, bringing home Roberts.  Tyler Croushorn (Omaha) was hit by a pitch to again load the bases.  Jeff Eubank (Fort Pierce, Fla.) earned a walk which drove in Santiesteban to tie the game at 4-4.  Jonathan Arche (Miami, Fla.) reached base on a Dordt error allowing Croushorn to score to put PSC on top 5-4.
 
The Defenders were able to knot it up in the top of the ninth at 5-5 and held PSC scoreless in the bottom of the inning to force extra frames.
 
After the 'Cats held Dordt scoreless in the top of the tenth, PSC was able to win it in the bottom of the tenth.  Croushorn singled to start the inning and went to second with a stolen base.  Then, Croushorn advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Following a ground out, Arche singled to left-center bringing home Croushorn for the win.
 
Croushorn and Gentry each had two hits, both going two for four.  Welty, with his two sacrifices, had two RBI to lead the team.

Ryan Grabowski (Omaha) started on the mound for his first start of the season and threw four innings.  Grabowski gave up just one hit, two runs – one earned, and struck out three.  Michael Jacobsen (Omaha) pitched one inning, scattering two hits, and gave up one earned run.  Arcia was the next Bobcat pitcher and was on the mound for one inning giving up one hit and one earned run, while striking out one.  Tyler Osborn (Tilden) threw the seventh inning for PSC and did not allow a hit or a run and was followed by Croushorn for one inning.  Croushorn struck out one Dordt batter.  Voigt finished the game and threw the final two innings.  Voigt, the eventual winner, gave up two hits and one earned run, while striking out one.  For Voigt, it was his first win as a Bobcat.

Upcoming Games
 
This weekend, April 14 and 15, Peru State has a pair of conference double headers with Avila University.  Game time for both days is 1 p.m.  On Sunday, following the games, the 15 Bobcat seniors will be recognized.
 
Monday, April 16, will be the make-up date for the rained out double header with Benedictine from this past Saturday.  Game time is 1 p.m.
 
After their 11-game home stand, the Bobcats will travel to Concordia University in Seward for a double header scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
