Park Softball Sweeps Peru State

(Peru, Neb.) – In non-conference action in Parkville, Mo., the Peru State College (PSC) Bobcat softball team dropped a double header to the Park University Pirates on March 25.
 
The Pirates won game one 6-1 and came from behind to take game two 5-4.  With the two wins, Park improved to 11-8 while the 'Cats fell to 16-11 overall.
 
Game One Action
 
The Bobcats scored their lone run in the top of the first inning after the first two outs of the game.  Toni Moffatt (Morden, Manitoba, Canada) walked and went to second when Devin Choate (Beatrice) was hit by a pitch.  Kristen Bodyk (Paris, Ontario, Canada) then singled driving in Moffatt, the only run and RBI of the first game.
 
Park tied the game in the bottom of the second.  In the bottom of the fourth, the Pirates took the lead for good by scoring three runs making it 4-1.  In the fifth and sixth innings, Park added one run making the final score 6-1.
 
Bodyk and Brittany Hoock (Elkhorn) each had one hit, as the Pirate pitching was strong.  Bodyk had the Bobcats' lone RBI.
 
Lyndsay Drumm (Bennington) pitched three and two-thirds innings and was tagged for the loss.  Drumm gave up seven hits and four runs – two of which were earned.  Drumm struck out one.  Devon Massengale relieved Drumm and pitched two and one-third innings giving up four hits and two runs – both earned.  Massengale struck out three during her time on the mound.

Game Two Action
 
The Bobcats had the lead in the second game going into the bottom of the seventh as they had scored one in the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
 
Choate walked to start the second inning and went to second on a ground out.  Hoock doubled driving in Choate for the first Bobcat run.
 
In the fourth, Emily Maresh (Central City) singled and went to second on a wild pitch.  Maresh advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hoock and later scored when Miranda Lyndes (Peyton, Colo.) singled.
 
Stephanie Holdsworth (Bennet) got on base in the fifth on a Park error.  Casee Ford (Fort Collins, Colo.) came in to run for Holdsworth and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Moffatt.  Another sacrifice bunt, this one by Choate, brought Ford home, making it 3-0 'Cats.
 
After the first out in the top of the sixth, Hoock singled to left field and after the next out, Hoock stole second base.  Alexa Johnson (Fremont) singled to right field and Hoock came around to score giving PSC a 4-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, the Pirates scored two runs to cut the deficit to 4-2.  After holding the Bobcats scoreless in the top of the seventh, Park scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to win the game 5-4.
 
The Bobcats outhit the Pirates seven to five, but were unable to win the game.  PSC committed one error while Park had two miscues.
 
Hoock and A. Johnson each had two hits while Choate, Hoock, Lyndes, and A. Johnson each were credited with an RBI.
 
Lauren Johnson (Seward) started the game and pitched six innings giving up just three hits and two runs – both earned.  Johnson struck out one.  Trista Hutchings (Cambridge, Ontario, Canada) came in to pitch in the seventh and gave up two hits and three runs – all earned.  Hutchings was credited for the loss as Park had rallied to win in that inning.

Upcoming Games
 
Peru State has a busy home schedule ahead of them.
 
Eight straight home games are scheduled in the next ten days, as the Bobcats will be at home on Wednesday, March 28; Saturday, March 31; Sunday, April 1; and Wednesday, April 4.
 
On March 28, PSC will begin their Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) play when they host the MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers.  On the 31st, the Evangel University Crusaders will visit in HAAC play.  Another conference match-up will take place on April Fool's Day when Central Methodist University will be in Peru.  On the fourth, the Bobcats will host former conference opponent, St. Mary of Omaha.  All games are double headers.  The HAAC games will begin at 2 p.m. while the St. Mary game starts at 3 p.m.
