(Peru, Neb.) - After coming off a pair of losses this past weekend, the Peru State College (PSC) Bobcat baseball team was looking to put a tally in the win column against Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU). But, they were not quite able to pull it off.
PSC lost to Nebraska Wesleyan 17-7, bringing the Bobcats' record to 12-5, and the Prairie Wolves gained their first win of the season and are now 1-4.
The Bobcats started off the game with one run scored in the bottom of the first, giving them their only lead of the game.
Jonathan Castillo (Paterson, N.J.) singled, followed by stealing second, and then advancing to third on an error by NWU.
Jonathan Arche (Miami, Fla.) grounded out to second, but brought Castillo in to score.
In the second inning both teams were scoreless, but Nebraska Wesleyan came out strong in the top of the third scoring two runs, followed by two more runs in the top of the fourth. At that point, the Prairie Wolves led 4-1.
PSC was able to put one run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth.
Derek Voigt (Auburn, Wash.) was hit by a pitch, followed by
Brenden Gentry (Sallisaw, Okla.) singling to the infield.
Gustavo Arcia (Caracas, Venezuela) then singled up the middle, bringing Voigt in to score the run. After four full innings, NWU led 4-2.
The top of the fifth brought two runs in for Nebraska Wesleyan, but not to be outdone, the Bobcats scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Starting things off in the bottom of the fifth was Arche who singled, followed by a
Jeff Eubank (Fort Pierce, Fla.) single.
J.L. Thomason (Holt, Fla.) was then able to reach first via a misplayed grounder, which also brought in Arche to score. Voigt then reached first on a fielder's choice. Finally,
Kyle Fredrickson (Omaha) reached first due to a misplayed grounded, bringing in Thomason and Voigt to score the final two runs of the inning.
At the end of five, Peru State was still in the game, having cut the deficit to one at 6-5.
Nebraska Wesleyan came out ready for battle in the top of the sixth and were able to put six runs on the scoreboard, while the Bobcats were unable to score in the bottom of the inning. NWU had jumped to a 12-5 advantage at that point.
The final inning of the game brought about another strong inning for Nebraska Wesleyan with five runs earned. But PSC came back with two more runs as well in the bottom of the inning, the two runs being scored off of a two-run home run by Voigt.
Gentry provided three hits while Castillo contributed two. Voigt and Fredrickson each had two RBIs while Arche and Arcia each had one.
Lincoln Mansch (Missoula, Mont.) pitched three and two-thirds innings in the game, giving up five runs off of seven hits, and received the loss for the game.
Will Scott (Defuniak Springs, Fla.) came in for one and one-third innings giving up two runs off of one hit.
Tyler Osborn (Tilden) then pitched for one-third inning giving up six runs in four hits.
Tim Crawford (Omaha) was next on the mound, pitching one and one-third innings giving up five runs and three hits. Finally, closing the game out,
Tyler Croushorn (Omaha) pitched one-third inning and gave up no hits or runs.

The Prairie Wolves and the Bobcats are playing another nine-inning game today, but on the home turf of Nebraska Wesleyan.
On Saturday, the 'Cats will begin their first Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) action when they travel to Lamoni, Iowa, to play the YellowJackets of Graceland University. The double header is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
The Bobcats will be at home on Wednesday, March 21, hosting conference foe, Evangel University, in a double header beginning at 1 p.m. That Saturday, another HAAC foe, Culver-Stockton College, will play at the Centennial Complex field, starting at 1 p.m.
