(Peru, Neb.) – It was not quite the outcome expected for the Peru State College (PSC) Bobcat softball team's trip to Tucson over their spring break.
After starting the season 4-0, the Bobcats went 5-8 over the course of five days playing in the Tucson Invitational Games. For the season, Peru State is now 9-8.
The following is a recap of each game, with the exception of an exhibition game in which the Bobcats defeated a junior college opponent – Lake Michigan College.
March 6 - Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.)
Olivet scored a run in the first and three more in the top of the fifth to take a four-run lead.
Peru State managed to put one run across in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as ONU won 4-1.
The Bobcats managed to get only one run after getting nine hits.
Stephanie Holdsworth (Bennet) and
Miranda Lyndes (Peyton, Colo.) each managed two hits with
Brittany Hoock (Elkhorn) getting the lone RBI on her one hit.
Emily Maresh (Central City) did hit a double in the loss.
Devon Massengale (Elkhorn) pitched a complete game throwing seven innings and took the loss. Massengale gave up four hits, but ONU was able to convert those hits into four runs, three of which were earned. During the game, Massengale had two strikeouts. With the loss, Massengale is now 1-1 on the season.
March 6 – Judson College (Ill.)
Judson scored three runs in the top of the first and came back with another run in the top of the second to take a 4-0 lead.
Peru State would manage to score in the bottom of the third to cut it to 4-1. However, Judson plated five runs in the fourth of the fourth to take a commanding lead at 9-1.
The 'Cats would scratch out two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-3. In the top of the sixth, JC scored one more to make the final score 10-3.
PSC scored their three runs on seven hits.
Lyndes went three for three while Massengale drove in two RBIs. Lyndes and Maresh each had one double.
Lyndsay Drumm (Bennington) took the loss after pitching the first three and two-thirds innings. Drumm gave up five runs – four unearned on eight hits. She struck out three and is now 1-1 on the season.
Trista Hutchings (Cambridge, Ontario, Canada) came in to relieve Drumm in the fourth and finished the game. Hutchings gave up five runs – all earned – on five hits and struck out four.
March 6 – Purdue North Central (Ind.)
The Bobcats suffered their third loss of the day to Purdue North Central (PNC).
PNC jumped to an early 3-0 lead as they scored three in the bottom of the first inning.
In the top of the third, Peru State managed to plate two, to cut it to 3-2. However, Purdue North Central came back and scored two of their own in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-2.
The Bobcats would score one in the top of the fourth and seventh innings, but it was not enough as PNC won 5-4.
Peru State scored their four runs on eight hits.
Toni Moffatt went three for four and had one RBI to lead PSC.
Lauren Johnson (Seward) pitched a complete game in the loss and is now 1-1 on the season. Johnson gave up five earned runs on nine hits and struck out two.
March 7 – Robert Morris College (Ill.)
Peru State got their first win of the Tucson trip when they defeated Robert Morris (RMC) 8-4.
Both teams scored one run in the second inning. The 'Cats took a 2-1 lead at the end of three having plated one in the bottom of the third. Robert Morris tied it back up in the top of the fourth.
The Bobcats were able to plate four runs in the bottom of the fourth giving them a 6-2 advantage.
Each team scored one in the fifth and after five; it was 7-3. Peru State added one more run in the bottom of the sixth while RMC scored one in the top of the seventh to make the final score 8-4.
PSC scored eight runs on 11 hits, their most hits of the tournament at that point.
Massengale went three for three and drove in one RBI to lead PSC. Maresh went two for three and added an RBI. Massengale, Maresh, and
Devin Choate (Beatrice) each had one double in the win.
Danae Disney (Wymore) earned her second win of the season as she pitched six and one-third innings scattering four hits and giving up four earned runs. Massengale pitched the final two-thirds of an inning and struck out one.
March 7 – Calumet College (Ind.)
After scoring one in the bottom of both the first and third innings and taking a 2-0 lead, the Bobcats gave up three runs in the top of the fourth to Calumet.
Then, in the fifth, Calumet scored another run to give the final run of the game as they eventually won 4-2.
Peru State scored their two runs on six hits.
Choate led the offense going two of three and drove in both PSC runs.
Drumm suffered her second loss of the tournament as she gave up the four earned runs on six hits. Now 1-2, Drumm struck out one Calumet batter.
March 8 – William Penn University (WPU) (Iowa)
The morning of the eighth started as it ended the previous night for the Bobcats, with a loss to William Penn.
WPU scored three in the top half of the first to jump to a 3-0 lead. Peru State would score one in the bottom of the second cutting it to 3-1 at that point.
William Penn added another run in the top of the third, but PSC managed to knot the game up at 4-4 by scoring three in the bottom half of the third.
The Statesmen added one in both of the fourth and fifth to lead 6-4; but PSC added one in the bottom of the fifth and were down by one, 6-5, going into the top of the seventh. WPU added one insurance run in the top of the seventh and won 7-5.
The 'Cats scored five runs on ten hits.
Choate and Holdsworth each went three for four with Choate driving in two RBI. Choate had a double and triple in the game while Moffatt's lone hit was a double as well.
Drumm started on the mound and took the loss against William Penn. Drumm gave up seven earned runs on 12 hits in the five innings she pitched.
Massengale pitched the final two innings giving up only two hits and striking out one.
March 8 – Siena Heights University (SHU) (Mich.)
It was a close one with Siena Heights, but the Bobcats eventually fell 5-4.
SHU scored one in the top of the second to go up 1-0. Peru State put two across in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead which held until the fifth inning. Siena Heights pushed across four runs in the inning to go on top 5-2.
The Bobcats did get two in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally was short and SHU won 5-4.
PSC had ten hits that led to their four runs.
Kristen Bodyk (Paris, Ontario, Canada), Choate, and Moffatt each had two hits. Bodyk and Choate each had one RBI. Choate, Maresh, and Moffatt each had a double. Choate and Moffatt each added a triple.
Johnson picked up her second loss of the season as she threw a complete seven innings. Johnson gave up four earned runs on 11 hits and struck out five in the loss.
March 8 – Trinity International University (TIU) (Ill.)
The Bobcats were able to salvage one win on March 8 as they topped Trinity International 7-3.
PSC took a 4-0 lead having scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. That score stood until TIU scored two in the top of the fourth making it 4-2.
Trinity got within one at 4-3 by scoring another run in the top of the fifth. The Bobcats extended their lead to three at 6-3 by plating two runs in the bottom of the inning.
PSC added one run in the seventh giving them a 7-3 victory.
The Bobcats scored their seven runs on eight hits.
Maresh led the 'Cats going two for three in hitting. Moffatt had two RBIs in the win.
Disney gained her second win of the tournament as she scattered four hits. Disney gave up just one earned run in her six innings. Drumm pitched the final inning in the win.
March 9 – Aquinas College (Mich.)
Friday saw the Bobcats losing their first game of the day to Aquinas College 5-2.
Aquinas scored runs in the top of the first, third, and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead.
Finally, in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bobcats scored two to cut it to 3-2. Then, in the top of the sixth, Aquinas put two more on the board, making it 5-2, the eventual final score.
PSC scored their two runs on seven hits in the game.
Holdsworth and Moffatt had three and two hits respectively to lead the team. Choate had two RBIs on her lone hit.
Hutchings started the game and went five and one-third innings and suffered the loss. She gave up five earned runs on five hits. Hutchings struck out one. Massengale finished the game in relief throwing one and two-thirds innings and also struck out one.
March 9 – Viterbo University (Wisc.)
Bouncing back after their morning loss, PSC won their second game of the day to Viterbo University 6-5.
Viterbo had the first lead of the game scoring two runs in the top of the second, but that would be their last lead of the game as the Bobcats answered back with four runs in the bottoms of the second making the score 4-2.
PSC scored another run in the bottom of the fourth before Viterbo earned three unanswered runs in the top of the fifth, sixth, and seventh bringing the score to 5-5. PSC finished the game in the bottom of the eighth earning one run, making the final score 6-5.
The Bobcats scored their six runs on eight hits in the game.
Maresh had two hits, while Hoock, Holdsworth, Bodyk, Blackwell, Choate, and Walker all contributed one each. Hoock, Maresh, Massengale, Choate, Moffatt, and Walker each had one RBI on their hits.
Massengale pitched the entire eight innings and got the win. She gave up five earned runs on seven hits, and struck out twelve, tying her recently broken school record.
March 9 – University of Great Falls (Mont.)
Earning another win for the day the Bobcats prevailed over University of Great Falls with a score of 4-2.
Great Falls came out swinging in the top of the first earning one run, but the Bobcats came back swinging harder earning three runs in the bottom of the first making the score 3-1. Great Falls earned another run in the top of the second, but that would be their last run of the game.
PSC sealed the fate of Great Falls with a final earned run in the bottom of the fifth making the final score 4-2.
The Bobcats scored their four runs on five hits in the game.
Bodyk had two hits, while Oldfield, Moser, and Choate each added one hit. Bodyk had three RBI's on her hits.
Drumm pitched all seven innings and got the win. She gave up two earned runs on six hits, and struck out three.
March 10 – Iowa Wesleyan College
PSC's continued their streak in their first game of the day with a win over Iowa Wesleyan of 3-1.
Iowa Wesleyan got their bats going in the top of the third when they scored one run. The Bobcats and Iowa Wesleyan would remain scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when Peru finished the game with three runs, making the final score 3-1.
PSC scored their three runs on seven hits.
Maresh and Bodyk had two hits each, and Maresh had two RBI's while Bodyk had one RBI.
Johnson pitched the full game and got the win. She did not give up any earned runs off their six hits, and struck out five.
March 10 – Cornerstone University (Mich.)
The Bobcats' last game of the day vs. Cornerstone University brought on a loss of 6-5.
PSC earned the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Cornerstone immediately answered back with a run in the top of the second, but not to be out done PSC earned two runs in the bottom of the second making the score 3-1.
The Bobcats moved on to score two more runs in the bottom of the third bringing the score to 5-1, but it was not enough as Cornerstone came out strong in the top of the sixth and earned five runs making the final score 6-5.
PSC scored their five runs on seven hits in the game.
Oldfield and Maresh each contributed two hits and Maresh, Lyndes, and Choate each had one RBI in the game.
Disney started the game and went five innings. She gave up one earned run on seven hits, and struck out one.
Whitley Albury (Peru) pitched one-third inning and game up two earned runs on one hit. Drumm finished and went one and two-thirds innings and suffered the loss. She gave up two earned runs on two hits.
Upcoming Games
The Bobcats are playing Midland University on Tuesday, March 13, in Fremont. The double header with the Warriors will begin at 4:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, March 14, the Bobcats will be hosting the Ottawa University Braves in a double header starting at 3 p.m.
Then, on Thursday, the 'Cats are travelling to Crete to take on the Doane College Tigers. Game time for this double header is 3 p.m.
