(Peru, Neb.) – The Peru State College (PSC) Athletic Department held their annual golf tournament on June 3 at the Table Creek Golf Course in Nebraska City. Thirty-three teams participated in the event making it one of the largest conducted by Bobcat Athletics.
The team led by Bobcat Softball Head Coach Mark Mathews won the Championship Flight as three teams tied with scores of 59 in the four-person scramble. The ties were broken with a scorecard playoff. Also golfing with Mathews were Don Brummer (Omaha), Ty Ratliff (Fairfax, Mo.), and Mark Gurley (Olathe, Kan.). Taking second place was the Cotty's team of Dan Cotton (Peru), Terry Ratliff (Shenandoah, Iowa), John Barnard (Auburn), and Ron Perry (Auburn). The third place team was Wurtele Distributing of Nebraska City. Wurtele team members included Jerry Wurtele, Tommy Aldana, Nate Neeman, and Mike Borns – all from Nebraska City.

Winning the First Flight was a team from Omaha who shot a 65. Members of the team were Jeff Sarface, Brian Keaton, Jim Martens, and Jerry Woodward. Second went to a team consisting of Kory Lind (Nebraska City), Ryan Sjulin (Nebraska City), and Dwight and Quentin Edelman (Sabetha, Kan.). The third place team was Chris Crawford (Auburn), Ben Combs (Auburn), Jeromy Jones (Peru), and Greg Parriott (Peru). Both the second and third place teams shot a 66.

The Second Flight winners were also decided by a scorecard playoff as three teams tied with a 69. Winning the flight was the team led by PSC Athletic Director Steve Schneider. Also golfing with Schneider were Doug Lanik (Wahoo), James Schneider (Fremont), and Melvin Schneider (Fremont). The Bank of Peru team finished second and consisted of Jud Douglas (Lincoln), Ron Douglas (Lincoln), Scott Douglas (Ashland), and Chris Matthews (Omaha). Third place went to Michael Sandfort (Brock), Brian Meyer (Johnson), Andy Grotrian (Johnson), and Joe Schlosser (Shubert).

Dr. Dan Hanson, PSC President, was a guest putter with each team on the ninth green. Hanson nailed seven putts for various teams and later posed for pictures with each team, along with the First Lady, Elaine Hanson.

The Terry Clark team won the skins game on Hole #4 while Kory Lind's team won the skins game on Hole #9.
Schneider and lead organizer, Vickie Melvin – an athletic trainer for the Bobcats, were pleased with the turnout and how the event ran. Melvin said, “We were very excited to have a full tournament and appreciate all of the businesses and individuals whom supported the event. Without their generous donations, we would not be able to have an event of this nature.”
Schneider added his appreciation for the two main golf tournament sponsors for the tournament which were the Omaha Alumni Association – Brad Smith – 2011-12 Chapter President and Smith Vending Corporation – Rod Nester, Owner & General Manager – of Clarinda, Iowa. He also said, “The Bobcat Athletic Department is truly appreciative of the contributions from not only the Omaha Alumni Association and Smith Vending, but of all of the additional corporate sponsors.” Schneider listed the additional corporate sponsors as Nebraska Orthopedic and Sports Medicine, Wurtele Distributing, Bank of Peru – Branch of Farmer's Bank of Cook, Table Creek Golf Course, Arbor Manor Steakhouse & Lounge, Cotty's, Engles Agency, Valentino's Grand Italian Buffett, Peru State Football Booster Club, and Burr Farm's.
Additional hole sponsors included Nemaha County Hospital, Carson National Bank, Lifetime Vision, Schneider OK Tire, Rixstine Recognition, Mutual of Omaha, Pieters Construction, Subway, Wenger – Gearboss, and Pioneer. Steve Krajicek, a PSC alumna, and the College's Creative Dining Services were the lunch sponsors. Next year's tournament will be June 1, 2012, at Table Creek.
