Bobcat Volleyball Upsets Benedictine

(Peru, Neb.) – The race for the teams jostling for a better seed in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) volleyball got a little tighter Thursday night.  The Peru State College (PSC) Bobcat volleyball team had a hand in this as they defeated the fourth place Benedictine College Ravens on their own court by scores of 25-23, 17-25, 25-14, 23-25, 15-12.

With the win, which could be classified as an upset in terms of league standings, the Bobcats improved to 3-4 in the HAAC and 10-16 overall.  The Ravens fell to 5-3 in conference play and 10-16 overall as well.  The Bobcats strengthened their sixth place position and with two more wins and a Benedictine loss, could find themselves in a tie for fourth in the league.  There are a lot of 'howevers,' though, that will determine the final seedings for the upcoming HAAC Tournament which will begin on Sat., Nov. 5.

Carly Morehead (Fairbury) and Jessie Clark (Omaha) both were in double digit kills with 13 and 11 respectively.  Morehead also added eight digs, two service aces, one solo block and five block assists.  Clark contributed five digs and one assist in the win.  Maddy Lister (North Platte) put down nine kills to go along with her six digs, one solo block, and two block assists.

Amanda Gilreath  (Omaha) and Courtney Jurek (Bellevue) had 17 and 15 assists respectively while handling the setting duties.   Jurek was double-digit in digs, too, with 15 and had two service aces while Gilreath had seven digs.

Also in double figures for digs were Emily Maresh (Central City) and Kelsey Monahan (Atkinson) with 13.  Maresh also had two service aces and one assist.  Becky Boshart (Wood River) almost made it four in double figure kills as she finished the night with nine.

Rachel Rippe (Johnson) helped slow the Raven attack as she had one solo block and seven block assists to go with her one kill.

PSC is back in action on Saturday with their last regular-season home game as they host the Culver-Stockton College Wildcats at noon in the Al Wheeler Activity Center.  The Bobcat seniors and parents of all of the players will be honored.
