Bellevue tops Peru State VB in Johnson

(Peru, Neb.) – In a game featuring former teammates and another area player, the Bellevue University (BU) Bruins defeated the Peru State College (PSC) Bobcats at the Johnson-Brock High School gymnasium in Johnson, Neb. The Bruins, now 19-5 on the year, topped the 'Cats, who fell to 6-14 as Bellevue won 25-17, 25-19, 26-24. This was a non-conference match-up featuring Bobcat Rachel Rippe (Johnson) and Bruins Jordan Broady (Johnson) and Kali Schnacker (Humboldt).

In the first set, the teams traded points and it was tied at 6-6 before Bellevue jumped to an 11-6 lead before PSC scored again. Peru State would get as close as 12-9 in the set, but that was as close as the 'Cats would get. Bellevue would eventually go up by nine points, before the Bobcats would score some to make it closer.

Bellevue scored the first two points of the game before PSC got on the board and stretched it to a nine-point lead before the Bobcats would whittle away at the deficit. Peru State got back as close as three points on two different occasions late in the game before BU eventually won the game.

At the beginning of the third game, it looked a little bleak for Peru State as Bellevue jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the 'Cats rallied to knot the score at 6-6. BU eventually went back on top 9-6, but then the 'Cats came back to take a 10-9 lead. The rest of the set was close with neither team having much of a lead until PSC went on top 20-17, forcing a Bruin time-out. Following the time-out, Bellevue went out to a 21-20 lead. It was then a one-point lead for either team until a service error on set point, allowed Bellevue to tie it back up and then Bellevue finished it out with two consecutive kills.

Maddy Lister (North Platte) led PSC with eight kills and two assists. Carly Morehead (Fairbury) and Jessie Clark (Omaha) added six and five kills respectively. Morehead added a solo block, two block assists, and one dig. Clark had two digs and two block assists. Rippe finished with four kills and two block assists.

Amanda Gilreath
(Omaha) had 13 assists while Courtney Jurek (Bellevue) added ten assists. Each setter had four digs while Jurek had one service ace.

Kelsey Monahan (Atkinson) and Emily Maresh (Central City) each had eight digs with Monahan producing a team- and game-high three service aces. Maresh added one service ace.

The Bobcats are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 15, when they host the Evangel University Crusaders in a Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) game starting at noon, instead of the originally printed time of 1 p.m. The following week, PSC will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to participate in the Grand View University Tournament. On Friday, the Bobcats will face AIB College of Business and the University of Sioux Falls. They will conclude the tournament on Saturday with games against Jamestown College and Illinois Tech.
