Kimberly (Kimmy) Behrends graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) in May of 2019 with a bachelor of science in athletic training. In addition to being a certified trainer, she has certifications as American Red Cross CPR/AED and Emergency Oxygen Administration.
A member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), Behrends was a member of the UNK Athletic Training Student Association for three years. She served the student group as its secretary during her junior year.
Behrends had several clinical experiences while completing her degree at UNK. Those internships included working a semester at Lexington High School and at Kearney Physical Therapy. At Lexington, she completed assessments on multiple athletes of different sports at varying levels of competition. While at Kearney Physical Therapy, Behrends assisted in the rehabilitation of patients with different degrees of physical injuries and disabilities.
For her primary sport assignment, Behrends worked with the Loper football team. In addition to assessing injuries of the student-athletes, she prepared them for participation and then helped with post-participation treatment.
In addition to her clinical experiences, Behrends served as an athletic training student medical volunteer at a wide variety of events such as UNK wrestling tournaments and duals, other UNK home sporting events, football games at Beatrice High School, the Nebraska High School Activities Association Cross Country state championships, and the MIAA Regional Volleyball Tournament.
As a part of her program, Behrends worked on a research project entitled, “Effects of the anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery/rehabilitation on post-surgery knee functionality” under UNK faculty members Dr. Scott Unruh and Dr. Kazuma Akehi.
Behrends and her husband Dylan reside in Filley.
