(Olathe, Kan.)- Peru State's strong start faded under consistent pressure from No. 11 MidAmerica Nazarene on Wednesday night, as the Bobcats fell 93-64 in nonconference women's basketball action.
The decisive stretch came over the middle two quarters, when the Pioneers turned a tight first-period battle into a commanding advantage. Trailing just 25-23 after the first quarter, Peru State was outscored 22-10 in the second and 25-13 in the third, allowing MidAmerica Nazarene to build a 72-46 lead heading to the fourth. The hosts' balanced scoring and efficiency at the free-throw line helped keep the Bobcats from mounting a serious comeback down the stretch.
Forward Erison Vonderschmidt led Peru State and all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, while adding three rebounds and two assists in 38 minutes. Vonderschmidt set the tone early, knocking down a jumper to give the Bobcats a 16-11 lead with 4:26 left in the first quarter and later drilling a 3-pointer early in the second to trim the deficit to 28-26. She also closed the night with a put-back basket at the final horn to bring Peru State to its final total.
Peru State traded baskets with the Pioneers in an up-tempo opening quarter, shooting efficiently in a 23-point frame to stay within two. However, MidAmerica Nazarene began to separate in the second quarter, using a 22-point period and timely perimeter shooting to stretch the margin. A 3-pointer by the Pioneers' Mary Lukert with 3:44 left in the half pushed the lead into double digits at 45-32, and Peru State went into halftime down 47-33.
Peru State shot a solid 24-of-51 (47.1 percent) and matched the hosts with eight 3-pointers, but the Bobcats attempted 10 fewer free throws and were outscored 21-8 at the stripe. The Pioneers also held a 33-23 edge on the glass and turned 11 steals into additional scoring chances.
